Jesus Christ's descent into hell. This event is often overlooked, but it holds great significance for our salvation.
Let us begin by looking at Acts 2:31, where the Apostle Peter preaches about the resurrection of Jesus: "Seeing what was to come, he spoke concerning the resurrection of the Messiah: He was not abandoned in Hades, and his flesh did not experience decay." Here, Peter uses the word "Hades" to refer to the place where the dead go. This verse suggests that Jesus did not remain in the realm of the dead, but instead rose from the dead.
We can also turn to Ephesians 4:8-10, where the Apostle Paul writes, "Therefore it says: When he ascended on high, he took the captives captive; he gave gifts to people. But what does 'he ascended' mean except that he also descended to the lower parts of the earth? The one who descended is also the one who ascended far above all the heavens, to fill all things." Here, Paul refers to Jesus' descent into the lower parts of the earth. This verse suggests that Jesus went to the place of the dead before ascending to heaven.
But why did Jesus descend into hell? The answer can be found in 1 Peter 3:18-20: "For Christ also suffered for sins once for all, the righteous for the unrighteous, that he might bring you to God, after being put to death in the fleshly realm but made alive in the spiritual realm. In that state he also went and made a proclamation to the spirits in prison who in the past were disobedient, when God patiently waited in the days of Noah while the ark was being prepared." Here, Peter suggests that during His descent into hell, Jesus proclaimed the good news of salvation to the souls who had died before His coming. Christ's death and resurrection opened the door to heaven for all who would believe in Him, including those who had passed away before His arrival on earth.
Furthermore, we can turn to Revelation 1:18, where Jesus Himself declares, "I am the Living One; I was dead, and now look, I am alive forever and ever! And I hold the keys of death and Hades." These words show that through His descent into hell, Jesus gained the power and authority to conquer death and release the souls held captive there.
In conclusion, the descent of Jesus into hell is a vital part of our redemption story. Through His journey to the underworld, He proclaimed the good news of salvation to those who had died before His coming, gained the power to conquer death, and rose from the dead to bring us eternal life. Let us give thanks to God for His great mercy and love, which sent His Son to redeem us from sin and death.
