Intro:
My fishing stuff from the sea of Galilee
How was the journey this last week from: Downcast heart, dialogue, discovery? Who did you talk to (Shout out names)? In what way was your heart downcast? What did you discover about Jesus that was helpful?
Why did Jesus go to the cross? Well, John 17:1-5 “When Jesus had spoken these words, he lifted up his eyes to heaven, and said, “Father, the hour has come; glorify your Son that the Son may glorify you, since you have given him authority over all flesh, to give eternal life to all whom you have given him. And this is eternal life, that they know you, the only true God, and Jesus Christ whom you have sent. I glorified you on earth, having accomplished the work that you gave me to do. And now, Father, glorify me in your own presence with the glory that I had with you before the world existed.”
Because it was the will of the Father!
He even rebukes Peter for getting in the way of this with the sword in John 18:11 “So Jesus said to Peter, “Put your sword into its sheath; shall I not drink the cup that the Father has given me?”
So, what is God the Father’s Will for you in light of the death burrial and resurrection of Jesus...
Outline:
Peace: “For Fear of the Jews” (vs. 19-23)
Belief: “Unless I See/Touch...” (vs. 24-31)
On Your Feet: “Follow Me” (Chapter 21)
Summary: God the Father’s will for us is to overcome fear, unbelief, and failure through the presence, proof, and power of our resurrected Saviour!
Prayer:
Peace: “For Fear of the Jews” (vs. 19-23)
Peace: “For Fear of the Jews” (vs. 19-23)
Presence (v. 19)
On the evening of that day- following the discovery of the empty tomb
The first day of the week
the doors being locked where the disciples were
for fear of the Jews- in the garden, they had almost been arrested with Jesus, Peter in the courtyard is accused of being associated with Jesus. The heat is on.
Fear grips us when we seek to deal with the threats and difficulties of our lives without the presence of a resurrected Saviour.
Jesus came
and stood among them- Presence
and said to them
“Peace be with you”
John 14:27 “Peace I leave with you; my peace I give to you. Not as the world gives do I give to you. Let not your hearts be troubled, neither let them be afraid.”
John 16:33 “I have said these things to you, that in me you may have peace. In the world you will have tribulation. But take heart; I have overcome the world.””
Proof (v. 20)
When he had said this
He showed them his hands
and his sides
Then the disciples were glad
when they saw the Lord
Power (vs. 21-23)
Jesus said to them again
“Peace be with you”
as the father has sent me
even so I am sending you.- driven by love
And when he had said this
He breathed on them- sounds a lot like the creation of Adam, Jesus is beginning a new creation in the lives of the disciples that will be continued on Pentecost and carried out by the Church
and said to them
Receive the Holy Spirit
If you forgvie sins of any- declaring the forgviness of sins through the death burrial and resurrection of Jesus
they are forgiven them
If you withhold forgiveness from any- if someone rejects the death burrial and resurrection of Jesus they are not forgiven
it is withheld
Application/Implications:
Renew the Mind (the Scriptures):
What caught your attenting in this section?
Which verses or words would you like to study a little more this week?
Engage the Heart (humility vs. pride):
The presence of Jesus was accompanied by the peace. What ares of my life are paralyzed by fear?
What proof am I waiting to see before I will believe the power of Jesus?
God the Father’s will for Jesus is transfered to us, to proclaim the glory of God through the work of Jesus. Since the power to go has been transfered to me, what is keeping me from doing God’s will?
Enlist the Body (Words, actions, emotions):
What will it look/sound like to remind myself of the peace that is mine because of the presence of the Holy Spirit today?
What will it look/sound like to rely on God’s power to accomplish His will for me to proclaim His glory and not my own?
Who is one person in my sphere of influence that I need to share the peace of God through Jesus with this week?
Transitional phrase: Peace does not guarantee the abscence of fear or concflict, but it does guarantee the presence and power of our risen saviour to compel us to proclaim His glory. What else is weighty enough to captivate our whole lives other than proclaiming the peace of God that is available through Jesus?! We all know that, yet, sometimes we doubt.
Belief: “Unless I See/Touch...” (vs. 24-31)
Belief: “Unless I See/Touch...” (vs. 24-31)
Presence (vs. 24-25)
Now Thomas
one of the twelve
Called the twin
was not with them when Jesus came
So the other disciples told him- imperfect, over and over
“We have seen the Lord”
But he said to them
unless I see in his hands the mark of the nails
and place my finger into the mark of the nails
and place my hand into his side
I will never believe- When Thomas lived without the presence of Jesus it was natural to move to disbelief.
Proof (vs. 26-29)
Eight days later- God’s timing is different than ours! This also strengthens the claim of the resurrection by having another interaction with Jesus in another place
his disciples were inside again
and Thomas was with them
Although the doors were locked
Jesus came and stood among them
and said
Peace be with tyou
Then He said to Thomas
put your finger here
and see my hands
and put out your hand and place it in my side
do not disbelive but believe
And Thomas answered him
“My Lord and my God!”
Jesus said to him
Have you believed because you have seen me?
Blessed are those who have not seen and yet have believed.
Power (vs. 30-31)
Now Jesus did many other signs in the presence of the disciples
which are not written in this book
But these are written so that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ,
and that by believing you may have life in his name

Engage the Heart (humility vs. pride):
When I live life without the presence of Jesus, it is easy to move into disbelief.
What doors are locked in my life from the presence, proof, and power of Jesus? What areas have you saying, “Unless I see…I will never believe”? Cure, Children coming to Jesus, turn the lights on, kicking an addiction, getting rid of my debt, provicing a spouse, etc
The book of John was written so that I would believe that Jesus is the Christ and that by believeing you may have life in his name. Will you start reading John this week? (read three days, 3 chapters each day and record what it is asking you to believe about Jesus).
Transitional phrase: Fear and unbelief are often associated with a lack of understanding who God is and what is true. You want to “see” or “touch” Jesus? it is going to require you to pick up the word and read. Faith compels us to give feet to the facts we find in God’s word.
PIC OF THE SEA: Fisherman, big map of Israel, Capurnaum
On Your Feet: “Follow Me” (Chapter 21)
On Your Feet: “Follow Me” (Chapter 21)
Presence (vs. 1-4)
after this Jesus revealed Himself again to the disciples by the Sea of Tiberias
Simon Peter said to them
I am going fishing- wait a minute, after 3 years, all the miracles, walking on water, the Mt. of Transfiguration, the declaration in the garden, witnessing his death, burrial, and empty tomb, and Jesus’ commission to be sent he returns fishing? To life as it was before he met Jesus? Doing the same thing that they were when Jesus called them?
they said to him
We will go with you- Peter is not alone, his leadership takes others away from what Jesus commanded them in 2:20-21. Maybe they did not understand what Jesus was calling them to.
They went out and
got into the boat
but that night they caught nothing- sounds familiar.
Just as day was breaking
Jesus stood on the shore- He comes to them!
Yet the disciples did not know that it was Jesus
Proof (vs. 5-14)
Children, do you have any fish? “Lads, how’s it going?!”
They answered him, “No”
Cast the net on the right side of the boat, and you will find some
So they cast it
It is the Lord!
Bring some of the fish that you have just caught
Jesus already had a charcoal fire going with fish and bread
Peter went aboard and hauled the net ashore, 153 large fish
Come and have breakfast
None of the disciples dared to ask him, “Who are you”
They knew it was the Lord
Power (vs. 15- 25)
Simon, son of John, do you love (agapas) me more than these?
Feed (“boske” feed; herd; tend) my lambs- it was by the fire in the courtyard that he denied Jesus and now by the fire in the countryside he is restored
Simon, son of John, do you love (agapas) me?
Tend (poimaine” shepherd, pastor) my sheep
Simon, son of John, do you love (phileis) me?
Feed (“boske” feed, herd, tend) my sheep
Don’t forget the surroundings, what is right beside them on the beach? 150 large fish! Who provided them? If Jesus is able to provide over and abundantly for the physical feeding of men women and kids, don’t you think He has provided over and above what we need spiritually?
Follow Me
Application/Implications:
Renew the Mind (the Scriptures):
What caught your attenting in this section?
Which verses or words would you like to study a little more this week?
Engage the Heart (humility vs. pride):
Jesus in His compassion, comes looking for Peter and crew when they were seeking to get away from all that had happened, when they were returning to life before Jesus, when they were confused, afriad, and feeling like failures.
What old behaviours am I tempted to return to when I am tired, confused, afraid, and defeated?
Jesus has already provided the “fish”, now who are we going to go and give it to?
Enlist the Body (Words, actions, emotions):
When you are downcast in heart, confused, afraid, and feeling like a failure, don’t forget the presence of Jesus, the proof found in his word, and the power that is yours in the Holy Spirit.
Maybe this week you need to have a fire in your backyard or at a friends house or in your fireplace at home and talk with some friends about what it is going to look like to follow Jesus starting today
We just had our Missions’ conference a couple of weeks ago with the theme, “I will follow”. God the Father’s will for you is that you follow Him! What does that look/sound like in your life this week?
Transitional phrase: Jesus finds Peter, demonstrates proof that he will provide and the power to restore and then calls him to get on his feet and follow him! I want us all to stand. How is God the father working in your life to follow His will for you? In what ways is he calling you to your feet to follow Him?
