Notes
Transcript

Why is this important to know?

To promote conviction in one’s heart to truth.
To combat naysayers and their objections.
If the foundational truth of the Resurrection is not true then all we teach and believe is for not.
ACTS 1:1-3 1 The first account I composed, Theophilus, about all that Jesus began to do and teach, 2 until the day when He was taken up to heaven, after He had by the Holy Spirit given orders to the apostles whom He had chosen. 3 To these He also presented Himself alive after His suffering, by many convincing proofs, appearing to them over a period of forty days and speaking of the things concerning the kingdom of God.
Difference between Disciple and Apostles
The Disciples followed Jesus and learned directly from Him
Hebrew meaning is Learner/Believer
The Apostle were in charge of continuing Jesus earthly ministry.
Hebrew meaning is one who is sent
All Apostles are Disciples but not all Disciples are Apostles.
The apostles where accused of stealing Jesus Body
Evidence of Jesus Resurrection
Jesus was really dead
The Romans knew how to kill.
Matt. 27:53 “53 and coming out of the tombs after His resurrection they entered the holy city and appeared to many.”
None Biblical accounts of Jesus from Contemporary writers.
Josephus
was a 1st century Romano-Jewish scholar, historian and hagiographer, who was born in Jerusalem. He lived in the 1st century AD and his writings are an invaluable source of knowledge about this time period.
Tacitus (Tas-i-tus)
was a senator and a historian of the Roman Empire. He lived in the 1st century AD and the surviving portions of his two major works (the Annals and the Histories) examine the reigns of the Roman emperors from AD 14 to AD 70.
The Babylonian Talmud
The Babylonian Talmud is a central text of Rabbinic Judaism. It is a collection of writings that cover the post-biblical history of the Jewish people.
That the Tomb was empty
Early christians lost the location
Why? They didn’t care enough to remember
His enemies would have presented His body if they could have.
The Romans tolerated the worship of other gods, those gods of there conquered people.
They would add foreign gods to their temples to appease the conquered
They tolerated the Jews and allowed them to rule over there own people. The Sanhedrin
But Rome was not tolerant of the Christians because they had the only religion that claimed to have a living God. They saw them as cultish and radical.
The Disciples believed they saw His glorified body
So much so they were willing to die
Change of belief system
most were Jewish
worshiped on 1st day of the week Sunday
Celebrated the Lord’s Supper
Baptism a symbol of buried with Him in the Likeness of His death and raised in the Likeness of His Resurrection

I. 10 APPEARANCES AFTER HIS RESURRECTION

Mary Magdalene
MARK 16:9 9 Now after He had risen early on the first day of the week, He first appeared to Mary Magdalene, from whom He had cast out seven demons.”
You can see the whole appearance John 20:11-17
The other Mary and women
Matthew 28:8-10 “8 And they left the tomb quickly with fear and great joy and ran to report it to His disciples. 9 And behold, Jesus met them and greeted them. And they came up and took hold of His feet and worshiped Him. 10 Then Jesus said to them, “Do not be afraid; go and take word to My brethren to leave for Galilee, and there they will see Me.”
Disciples on Road to Emmaus
Luke 24:15-16 “15 While they were talking and discussing, Jesus Himself approached and began traveling with them. 16 But their eyes were prevented from recognizing Him.”
Cleopas was one the other not known.
Luke 24:17 “17 And He said to them, “What are these words that you are exchanging with one another as you are walking?” And they stood still, looking sad.”
Look at verse 27. Wow
Then beginning with Moses and with all the prophets, He explained to them the things concerning Himself in all the Scriptures.
Now that is some teaching.
.Luke 24:30-31 “30 When He had reclined at the table with them, He took the bread and blessed it, and breaking it, He began giving it to them. 31 Then their eyes were opened and they recognized Him; and He vanished from their sight.”
Simon - Cephas - Peter
luke 24:34 “34 saying, “The Lord has really risen and has appeared to Simon.””
Jesus appearing to Peter is also referenced in 1 Cor. 15:5 “5 and that He appeared to Cephas, then to the twelve.”
Disciples w/o Thomas
john 20:19-25 “19 So when it was evening on that day, the first day of the week, and when the doors were shut where the disciples were, for fear of the Jews, Jesus came and stood in their midst and said to them, “Peace be with you.” 20 And when He had said this, He showed them both His hands and His side. The disciples then rejoiced when they saw the Lord. 21 So Jesus said to them again, “Peace be with you; as the Father has sent Me, I also send you.” 22 And when He had said this, He breathed on them and said to them, “Receive the Holy Spirit. 23 “If you forgive the sins of any, their sins have been forgiven them; if you retain the sins of any, they have been retained.” 24 But Thomas, one of the twelve, called Didymus, was not with them when Jesus came.
25 So the other disciples were saying to him, “We have seen the Lord!” But he said to them, “Unless I see in His hands the imprint of the nails, and put my finger into the place of the nails, and put my hand into His side, I will not believe.””
6. Disciples and Thomas
John 20:26-29 “26 After eight days His disciples were again inside, and Thomas with them. Jesus came, the doors having been shut, and stood in their midst and said, “Peace be with you.” 27 Then He said to Thomas, “Reach here with your finger, and see My hands; and reach here your hand and put it into My side; and do not be unbelieving, but believing.” 28 Thomas answered and said to Him, “My Lord and my God!” 29 Jesus said to him, “Because you have seen Me, have you believed? Blessed are they who did not see, and yet believed.””
7. 7 Disciples at Sea of Tiberias (Galilee)
John 21:1-2 “1 After these things Jesus manifested Himself again to the disciples at the Sea of Tiberias, and He manifested Himself in this way. 2 Simon Peter, and Thomas called Didymus, and Nathanael of Cana in Galilee, and the sons of Zebedee, and two others of His disciples were together.”
Been fishing told the to cast nets and ate on beach.
8. Mountain at Galilee (The Great Commission)
Matthew 28:16-17 “16 But the eleven disciples proceeded to Galilee, to the mountain which Jesus had designated. 17 When they saw Him, they worshiped Him; but some were doubtful.”
1 Corinthians 15:6 “6 After that He appeared to more than five hundred brethren at one time, most of whom remain until now, but some have fallen asleep;”
9. James
1 Corinthians 15:7 “7 then He appeared to James, then to all the apostles;”
10. The Last Appearance also known as The Great Commission.
Matthew 28:18-19 “18 And Jesus came up and spoke to them, saying, “All authority has been given to Me in heaven and on earth. 19 “Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit,”

II. We have all we need. But

John 21:25 “25 And there are also many other things which Jesus did, which if they were written in detail, I suppose that even the world itself would not contain the books that would be written.”
What we have is all we need to experience our Lord and Savior.
Food for thought
KJV 783,137 Words
avg person speaks 16,000 words per day
if every word in the Bible represents Jesus 3 years Ministry it would only equate to 49 days.
