THE AUTHORSHIP

The authorship of first John is anonymous. We do not now its author. The epistle is silent on who the author is. The letter actually does not mention its authorship. The letter commences without its author. What we know is that the epistle right at he beginning goes direct into God’s revelation, it has no salutation that speaks of the author and the audience like other letters . To sum up, i would like to conclude by looking at what the Epistle of St. James, St. Peter, St.John, and St. Jude, Explained in Simple and familiar Language has said about the authorship of 1 John. It says, We are not told by whom it was written.” Now, all though the letter does not mention its authorship, others have attributed the letter of 1 John to the apostle John and they believe it was written by the apostle John because of the style of the Gospel of John. Now, since we do not know its authorship, all of us just speculate and provides our views.
Boddington, Gracilla. 1852. The Epistles of St. James, St. Peter, St. John, & St. Jude, Explained in Simple and Familiar Language. London: James Nisbet & Co.; Hamilton, Adams, & Co.

AUDIENCE

Again, when we look at this epistle, we see that it does not have an address, this means that it does not state its audience. Therefore, we do not know who the author was addressing.

DATE

We do not know the date when the letter was written, the letter does not actually state the date the author wrote it. Additionally, we have is series of debate as to when the letter was written. Some say it was written in 60 AD, some say in 90 Ad and so on. In conclusion, we do not actually know when the letter was written but the author knew when he wrote.

REASON WHY THE AUTHOR WROTE 1 JOHN

The author wrote to give an admonition on the issue of false teachers who were teaching false doctrine, he wrote to warn the Christians who were faced with false teachers who were perverting the God’s precious word.
APPLICATION: In application, Even though we do not know the authorship of the book, its recipients, and its date. What I do know is that the epistle of first John is God’s inspired Word. The revelation that we have in first John was handed to us through God’s mouthpiece through the agent of the Holy Spirit. Therefore, the Letter of first John is God’s precious we and we must study it and love it just like any other book in the Bible. I strongly believe that if the book was tested today it will stand the test and be considered as God’s precious Word.
