V.8 The Finality of Peters charge
a. The “all of you” points to all of the members within earshot of the letter being read aloud to the entire assembly.
2. Like-Minded.
a. All of the traits listed in v.8 are adj. Which is the character of our faith.
b. To have the same thinking, and character, Paul uses the same language in Phil 2:2 “complete my joy by being of the same mind, having the same love, being in full accord and of one mind.”
c. In being united by being “like-minded” we as Christians are able to withstand the opposition the world gives.
d. They are able to face the opposition without fear
3. Sympathetic
a. To be understanding of one another, or to show that we share in the experiences of others.
b. the word in greek sympathes denotes the kind of affection a mother has toward her children, to show an understanding nature toward others
c. To show actual affection toward each other, and to grow in that affection.
4. Compassionate
a. To love ones brother/sister
b. to be merciful, True affection is more than just intellectual, It is actually felt
c. This shows kindly actions, which helps foster unity
5. Humility
a. Voluntary Submission
b. “In the highly competitive and stratified world of Greco-Roman antiquity, only those of degraded social status were ‘humble’ and humility was a sign of weakness and shame, an inability to defend one’s honor”
c. It wasn't a virtue in Roman society But God commands it Proverbs 29:23 “One’s pride will bring him low, but he who is lowly in spirit will obtain honor.”
d. We are to reflect how Christ humbled himself by taking on flesh and was crucified
6. V.9) The 5 adjectives in action and our justification or our “calling”.
a. These are the attributes that foster unity.
b. The Torah ( first 5 books of the bible) allowed for when one is violated to return with equal retaliation.
c. “ OT justice attempted to ensure that the offender and the offended suffer equivalent losses”- Dennis Edwards
d. However Jesus requires something else of us. We are to show mercy and love to the offender
e. To give a blessing was more than likely verbal, The point is to speak well of the assailant
7. Called for this
a. To reflect these characteristics of unity, and to give a blessings in the face of sufferings shows what our calling is.
8. Justification
a. Peter references our justification by using the phrase of “calling’, In Chap 1 He refers to us as elect, called out of darkness, and holy.
b. All of these titles that we have in our justification; is tied to action. Particularly in suffering unjustly
c. In our justification we reflect the righteousness of God in 2 Cor “For our sake he made him to be sin who knew no sin, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God.” 5:21, the beatitude of “blessed are the peacemakers”
d. Therefore we see that our Justification on the go or having two legs
9. So that you have a blessing
a. Points to inheritance awaiting at the new creation.
10. Conclusion and Practicality in V. 10-12
a. We see what awaits us when obey these scriptures
b. The mighty name of God is proclaimed in our acts, Christ is shown through these.
