Theres no perfect family!
This might come as a surprise to some.
But all family's are dysfunctional.
All families are deeply flawed.
All families have troubles.
We are born into trouble as the sparks fly upwards.
The real reason is because we have sin.
Job 15:16 NKJV
16 How much less man, who is abominable and filthy, Who drinks iniquity like water!
We drink iniquity like water.
The older I get the more I realize that all of my heros have clay feet.
They are deeply flawed.
Coming in with that understanding of my depravity going into any relationship is very helpful.
Because theres no other place to go but to receive mercy for our deep rooted flaws.
We can discuss who’s right and who’s wrong but that doesn’t take care of the issue but mercy does.
A person who drinks iniquity like water theres no recovery for him. Theres no amount of marriage recovery books for him.
Theres no amount of counseling that could help or save. Its mercy thats the issue.
Throughout the scriptures theres great dysfunction starting with Adam and Eve.
We are all familiar with the fall.
We know that the serpent satan tempted Eve with the pride of life, the lust of the flesh and the lust of the eyes.
The pride of life - eating from the tree can make one wise.
The lust of the eyes - She seen the tree was desirable to make one wise.
The lust of the flesh - she took of the tree and ate it and gave it to her husband.
After Adam and Eve ate from the tree of knowledge of good and evil. They tries to hide themselves and sowed fig leaves together to try to cover there nakedness but God made clothes for them out of animal skins to cover there nakedness.
The fig trees is mans way to cover himself and to rid himself for shame and guilt.
But God used mercy to cover Adam and Eve. Our own fig trees aren’t enough we need the mercies of God to restore the broken families.
We need a Savior who is willing to come down in the cool of the day to say Adam where are you.
What did God do with this dysfunctional family He gave mercy.
Genesis 9:20–27 NKJV
20 And Noah began to be a farmer, and he planted a vineyard. 21 Then he drank of the wine and was drunk, and became uncovered in his tent. 22 And Ham, the father of Canaan, saw the nakedness of his father, and told his two brothers outside. 23 But Shem and Japheth took a garment, laid it on both their shoulders, and went backward and covered the nakedness of their father. Their faces were turned away, and they did not see their father’s nakedness. 24 So Noah awoke from his wine, and knew what his younger son had done to him. 25 Then he said: “Cursed be Canaan; A servant of servants He shall be to his brethren.” 26 And he said: “Blessed be the Lord, The God of Shem, And may Canaan be his servant. 27 May God enlarge Japheth, And may he dwell in the tents of Shem; And may Canaan be his servant.”
Though wine is said to cheer the heart Judges 9:13 “13 But the vine said to them, ‘Should I cease my new wine, Which cheers both God and men, And go to sway over trees?’”
Psalm 104:15 “15 And wine that makes glad the heart of man, Oil to make his face shine, And bread which strengthens man’s heart.”
And alleviate the pain of the curse of death
Proverbs 31:6 “6 Give strong drink to him who is perishing, And wine to those who are bitter of heart.”
It also has some very disturbing effects.
Moses grew up in a predominately pagan society. He grew up around alcoholism. He grew up around a sexually perverse society. He grew up around murders and killings and parties.
Theres two things that mark a pagan society intoxication and sexual looseness .
Intoxication and sexual looseness are hallmarks of pagans, and both traced back to this event in Noah’s life.
Noah was acting like a pagan at this point of his life. Before the flood the society under which he lives effected him no doubt.
Genesis 6:5 NKJV
5 Then the Lord saw that the wickedness of man was great in the earth, and that every intent of the thoughts of his heart was only evil continually.
To the ancients seeing one’s father naked was a breach of family ethic.
The sanctity of the family was destroyed and the strength of the father was made a mockery.
Lev 18:6-19 “6 ‘None of you shall approach anyone who is near of kin to him, to uncover his nakedness: I am the Lord. 7 The nakedness of your father or the nakedness of your mother you shall not uncover. She is your mother; you shall not uncover her nakedness. 8 The nakedness of your father’s wife you shall not uncover; it is your father’s nakedness. 9 The nakedness of your sister, the daughter of your father, or the daughter of your mother, whether born at home or elsewhere, their nakedness you shall not uncover. 10 The nakedness of your son’s daughter or your daughter’s daughter, their nakedness you shall not uncover; for theirs is your own nakedness. 11 The nakedness of your father’s wife’s daughter, begotten by your father—she is your sister—you shall not uncover her nakedness. 12 You shall not uncover the nakedness of your father’s sister; she is near of kin to your father. 13 You shall not uncover the nakedness of your mother’s sister, for she is near of kin to your mother. 14 You shall not u…”
I like how the brothers showed mercy and because they showed mercy they reaped a blessing because of it.
There was no perversion or even extortion .
The early church understood that the family had to be taken care of.
There was no lack of clarity about that.
Family was one of the first sacred intuitions God created with man.
1 Timothy 5:3 NKJV
3 Honor widows who are really widows.
1 Timothy 5:4 (NKJV)
4 But if any widow has children or grandchildren, let them first learn to show piety at home and to repay their parents; for this is good and acceptable before God.
1 Timothy 5:8 NKJV
8 But if anyone does not provide for his own, and especially for those of his household, he has denied the faith and is worse than an unbeliever.
Any family member who neglected his first obligation to family has denied the faith and is worse than an unbeliever.
In context it seems like this verse is speaking about how the children to take care of the parents.
It speaks about ones failure to provide for his widow.
Failure to provide meaning that theres a failure to think ahead, to provide for the needs in-advance.
Its not providing as a request is needed but before there is a request.
This verse speaks about the responsibility of the family to take care of one another.
Denial of the faith isn’t speaking about how somehow you forfeited your rights to salvation or how some how you lost it.
But you have failed allow the Holy Spirit to work in your life.
Titus 1:16 NKJV
16 They profess to know God, but in works they deny Him, being abominable, disobedient, and disqualified for every good work.
There are different ways one can deny the faith one can repudiate it out right or to deny it through ones actions.
