Deuteronomy 20:4 “for the Lord your God is he who goes with you to fight for you against your enemies, to give you the victory.’”
When the Children of Israel came out of Egypt, they travelled in the wilderness for 40 years before they reached the promised Land
The role of the priest in battle was not only to care for the ark, which symbolised the Lord’s presence with Israel’s army, but also by God’s Word to encourage the soldiers to be strong in faith.
The role of the priest today has not changed, it is till to encourage the people of God, that the presence of God is with them and that He will fight for them
A lack of trust in God’s ability to fight for them would affect the strength of their will, that is, they could easily become faint-hearted.
The role of the priest in battle was to encourage the soldiers by God’s promise, presence, and power to be strong in faith.
A lack of trust in God’s ability to fight for them would affect the strength of their will so that they would become fainthearted.
If a weak will was not controlled by faith from the very first, it would lead to fear, terror, and even to panic before their enemies.
So if the soldiers failed to listen to the priest they would become fearful and experience defeat
God has not called us to be faint-hearted, fearful or to panic
Deuteronomy 1:30 (NIV) — 30 The Lord your God, who is going before you, will fight for you, as he did for you in Egypt, before your very eyes,
Deuteronomy 3:22 (NIV) — 22 Do not be afraid of them; the Lord your God himself will fight for you.”
Victory was linked to their faith in God.
Today, victory is to a large extent also linked to our faith in God
Whether we believe God or not does not change God, or His ability to fight for us, but not believing God can weaken us so that we do not move forward in life
The fact that God is with you makes courage and faith possible, whereas panic properly belongs to the enemy
