Matthew 28:11-20
The response from the woman to Jesus’ rising was worship and fear.
But what happened to the guarding the tomb? As the woman was going away from the tomb, some of the guard went and told the chief priests the good news. (what are the others doing?) After much rejoicing they held a meeting, with the elders, cf, and gave the soldiers a satisfactory amount of money, and asked them to lie about what happened at the tomb. And say that the disciples came and stole the body of Jesus at night as they were sleeping. PPT x 2 And the council promised to keep the soldiers form punishment from Pilate if he should hear about the case. 15 they take the money and spread false news for the Jewish leaders, and it was affective so that when
Matthew writes his gospel people are still believing this lie. Today this lie is alive, - but as the PPT said, it is not likely, you are gasping for straw if you think this is a convicting argument. (Like the other lies that the leaders have come up with it full of holes, Jesus cast out demons).
This was not fear and worship, well it might be fear, how do you tell someone that an angle came and you froze and the tomb was empty? Fear of punishment.
Fear because what will the risen Jesus do to the leaders?
Great news because Jesus kept his promise and rose, and angle that came to proclaim that Jesus was risen as he said he would.
What will people do with Jesus’ resurrection? Believe in Jesus as Lord God and savior, or spread lies, this proves that cp and e was not going to change their minds even if Jesus came back from the death, or would come down from the cross, as Acts describes now a wave of persecution to stop people from speaking about Jesus would start. (And they did that knowing that Jesus rose from death).
Then what about people today? It is the same, does Jesus’ resurrection cause us to worship and fear the lord God, (the goodness of God that leads us to repentances).
Or does it cause us to reject Jesus, and believe or make up lies/ false news about Jesus? take the monet and lie? Matthew wrote long ago, but the same lie is told today, and believed. (Funny that antient sources said that Jesus was believed to have risen from death).
We see some of the same when Jesus meets with his disciples in Galilee, some worshiped, and some doubted. Their friend and Lord were risen, they worshiped him as Lord, they believed he was God, the fulfillment of the old testament the messiah, the everlasting God. And he rose from death, defeating death, Satan, sin, and making a way for us to be with God, the only one that was able to do it. God the son came to save us, from all the keeps us from God. (all idols, money, selfishness, power, greed, sexual sin, ) As Paul writes about adoption in to Gods family, from children of wrath to Children of God. Does that create worship in you? In me?
Or as some, does it create or stir up doubt? This is people that at that moment are standing with the risen Jesus, and still doubt rises in them. Why? The commentators try their best to explain, oh it is not the disciples that doubt, or they don’t doubt the are just not sure if it is Jesus. Hmmm…. Well that would be fit good if that was true, but they are still hiding when Pentecost comes around… If they doubt… then what about us?
If we are believers we want to respond with worship to Jesus. But why then does doubt arise in us? We know the whole story, but right now, in the moment, the lack of faith and doubt, that Jesus if right with me do you doubt? What makes you doubt? (Many reasons today and then, the Holy Spirt will reveal it to us.).
But Jesus being so kind and full of grace, shares with the disciples what they need to hear, to encourage them all, where they are at. The ones in their worship and the ones in their doubt.
1 Jesus authority. Jesus explains that all authority in heaven and earth is been given to him (by the God father). Jesus rules over all. Because if he did not the worshipers and the doubters would have no way or hope or chance to do what Jesus is asking them to do. (A reason to trust in faith, to not doubt).
2. The job Go. Making disciples (as I did) who? All nations… and Baptize them as I was… In The father, son, Holy Spirt. 3-1 refence Jesus is divine. But that is not all, like I did teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you. (All of Jesus teaching – and lived out in Jesus – beatitudes recap).
3. (Always with you) Jesus got all the power, and I will be with you always, to the end of the age. It has always been about God’s power to change people’s hearts towards Him, not our strength or gifts, but God’s power. Therefore, if Jesus is not with us, (Holy Spirt) we can do nothing, but if he is, nothing will be impossible for God. That is why I have hope doing the impossible, there none of my words that will change your life to love and serve Jesus, but one touch of the Holy Spirt and everything about your life or my brothers or your coworker’s life can change because nothing is impossible with God. Do we believe that our does doubt arises in our heats? That person is beyond saving, but Jesus has all power in heaven and earth, so it is more that possible, it is easy, if you’re a follower of Jesus changed by the Holy Spirt, you are proof that no one is out of reach, of God’s grace and power. That is why we can have hope, not in our strength, political power of good standing in the community, no, despite of all that because the first believers had very little of that, they trusted or doubted in God’s power to help them share about Jesus and teach the nations all that Jesus had taught.
Are the disciples motivated to do what Jesus asked?
Are we? Why or why not? Is Jesus words so strong, that we trust in them? And make them the foundation of we believe, and live out Jesus’ teaching as he did. And share that with others helping them become disciples of Jesus and to teach and observe all that Jesus has said.
Only by living in the gospel, the good news about Jesus will we be able to stand on Jesus as the rock, trust in him and his words and live them out in the Holy Spirt. And we can trust that Jesus is with us, to the end of the age. (We are never alone).
