Mack Sermon Notes March 26, 2023 Jesus’ Heartbeat for Women Select Scriptures In ancient Israel men were considered more important than women. The father or oldest male in the family made the decisions that affected the whole family, while the women had little to say about them. This patriarchal (father-centered) form of family life set the tone for the way women were treated. For example, a female was raised to obey her father without question. When she married she was to obey her husband in the same way. If she were divorced or widowed, she often returned to her father’s house to live. Leviticus 27: 1-8 suggests that a woman was worth only half as much as a man. A female child was less welcome into the world than a male. Boys were taught to make decisions and to rule their families while girls were raised to get married and bear children. Even though most women spent their days caring for the household, there were exceptions. [Like Miriam, Deborah, Esther, . . . more than good wives – they were political, and religious leaders who proved they could guide the nation as well as any man could.]. [A different picture unfolds in the early Christian church. Luke 8: 1-3 indicates that Jesus welcomed certain women as traveling companions. He encouraged Martha and Mary to sit and learn at His feet as disciples (Luke 10: 38-42). Jesus’ respect for women was something strikingly new. I. • The Mother Woman - The 12-year-old Boy Jesus Amazes the Scholars – Luke 2: 41-52 41 His parents went to Jerusalem every year at the Feast of the Passover. 42 And when He was twelve years old, they went up to Jerusalem according to the custom of the feast. 43 When they had finished the days, as they returned, the Boy Jesus lingered behind in Jerusalem. And Joseph and His mother did not know it; 44 but supposing Him to have been in the company, they went a day’s journey, and sought Him among their relatives and acquaintances. 45 So when they did not find Him, they returned to Jerusalem, seeking Him. 46 Now so it was that after three days they found Him in the temple, sitting in the midst of the teachers, both listening to them and asking them questions. 47 And all who heard Him were astonished at His understanding and answers. 48 So when they saw Him, they were amazed; and His mother said to Him, “Son, why have You done this to us? Look, Your father and I have sought You anxiously.” 49 And He said to them, “Why did you seek Me? Did you not know that I must be about My Father’s business?” 50 But they did not understand the statement which He spoke to them. 51 Then He went down with them and came to Nazareth, and was subject to them, but His mother kept all these things in her heart. 52 And Jesus increased in wisdom and stature, and in favor with God and men. ~ Mothers, though most encouraging and cheerleading – the least fascinated, impressed, entertained with stardom. They are most committed to being who God wired them to be: The Mother Woman! • Water Turned to Wine – John 2: 12:1 On the third day there was a wedding in Cana of Galilee, and the mother of Jesus was there. 2 Now both Jesus and His disciples were invited to the wedding. 3 And when they ran out of wine, the mother of Jesus said to Him, “They have no wine.” 4 Jesus said to her, “Woman, what does your concern have to do with Me? My hour has not yet come.” 5 His mother said to the servants, “Whatever He says to you, do it.” 6 Now there were set there six waterpots of stone, according to the manner of purification of the Jews, containing twenty or thirty gallons apiece. 7 Jesus said to them, “Fill the waterpots with water.” And they filled them up to the brim. And He said to them, “Draw some out now, and take it to the master of the feast.” And they took it. 9 When the master of the feast had tasted the water that was made wine, and did not know where it came from (but the servants who had drawn the water knew), the master of the feast called the bridegroom. 10 And he said to him, “Every man at the beginning sets out the good wine, and when the guests have well drunk, then the inferior. You have kept the good wine until now!” 8 11 This beginning of signs Jesus did in Cana of Galilee, and [a]manifested His glory; and His disciples believed in Him. 12 After this He went down to Capernaum, He, His mother, His brothers, and His disciples; and they did not stay there many days. ~ Besides ensuring to invite Jesus to the wedding and the marriage, don’t ever estimate the Mother Woman’s power and influence. • Jesus on the Cross Behold Your Mother – John 19: 25-27 Now there stood by the cross of Jesus His mother, and His mother’s sister, Mary the wife of Clopas, and Mary Magdalene. 26 When Jesus therefore saw His mother, and the disciple whom He loved standing by, He said to His mother, “Woman, behold your son!” 27 Then He said to the disciple, “Behold your mother!” And from that hour that disciple took her to his own home. 25 ~ The Mother Woman to the END! II. • The Made Whole Woman A Woman with a Spirit of Infirmity - 18 years Bent Over Woman Luke 13:10 – 17 10 Now He was teaching in one of the synagogues on the Sabbath. 11 And behold, there was a woman who had a spirit of infirmity eighteen years, and was bent over and could in no way raise herself up. 12 But when Jesus saw her, He called her to Him and said to her, “Woman, you are loosed from your infirmity.” 13 And He laid His hands on her, and immediately she was made straight, and glorified God. 14 But the ruler of the synagogue answered with indignation, because Jesus had healed on the Sabbath; and he said to the crowd, “There are six days on which men ought to work; therefore come and be healed on them, and not on the Sabbath day.” 15 The Lord then answered him and said, “Hypocrite! Does not each one of you on the Sabbath loose his ox or donkey from the stall, and lead it away to water it? 16 So ought not this woman, being a daughter of Abraham, whom Satan has bound—think of it—for eighteen years, be loosed from this bond on the Sabbath?” 17 And when He said these things, all His adversaries were put to shame; and all the multitude rejoiced for all the glorious things that were done by Him. • Woman at the Well • Issue of Blood Woman Healed– Luke 8: 43-48 [and A Girl Restored to Life] 43 Now a woman, having a flow of blood for twelve years, who had spent all her livelihood on physicians and could not be healed by any, 44 came from behind and touched the border of His garment. And immediately her flow of blood stopped. 45 And Jesus said, “Who touched Me?” When all denied it, Peter and those with him said, “Master, the multitudes throng and press You, and You say, ‘Who touched Me?’ ” 46 But Jesus said, “Somebody touched Me, for I perceived power going out from Me.” 47 Now when the woman saw that she was not hidden, she came trembling; and falling down before Him, she declared to Him in the presence of all the people the reason she had touched Him and how she was healed immediately. 48 And He said to her, “Daughter, be of good cheer; your faith has made you well. Go in peace.” • • • Caught in the Act Woman The Demon Possessed Woman (Mary) The Persistent Woman . . . and the unjust judge! (Luke 18: 1-8) 18:1 Then He spoke a parable to them, that men always ought to pray and not lose heart, 2 saying: “There was in a certain city a judge who did not fear God nor regard man. 3 Now there was a widow in that city; and she came to him, saying, [ ‘Get justice for me from my adversary.’ 4 And he would not for a while; but afterward he said within himself, ‘Though I do not fear God nor regard man, 5 yet because this widow troubles me I will [c]avenge her, lest by her continual coming she weary me.’ ” 6 Then the Lord said, “Hear what the unjust judge said. 7 And shall God not avenge His own elect who cry out day and night to Him, though He bears long with them? 8 I tell you that He will avenge them speedily. Nevertheless, when the Son of Man comes, will He really find faith on the earth?” ~ III. The Spiritual Woman • • The Example of the Jesus Woman Teach the Younger Women Titus 2: 1-4 NKJV Qualities of a Sound Church 2 But as for you, speak the things which are proper for sound doctrine: 2 that the older men be sober, reverent, temperate, sound in faith, in love, in patience; 3 the older women likewise, that they be reverent in behavior, not slanderers, not given to much wine, teachers of good things— 4 that they admonish the young women to love their husbands, to love their children, 5 to be discreet, chaste, homemakers, good, obedient to their own husbands, that the word of God may not be blasphemed. ~ The consummate church WOMAN – one who is an extension of sound doctrine which means always modeling biblical truth, actions, and attitudes that lead to a sensible and spiritually healthy church and home.
