HONORING MY PARENTS

Honor your father and your mother, so that your days may be long in the land that the Lord your God is giving you. Exodus 20:12

I. WHY DID GOD GIVE THIS COMMANDMENT?    Because...

·      There Are No [PERFECT] Parents!

·      Respect For [AUTHORITY] Begins At Home.

·      How I Relate To My Parents Will Affect Every Other [RELATIONSHIP].

II. HOW TO HONOR MY PARENTS

1. AS A CHILD, I HONOR THEM BY [OBEYING] AND [RESPECTING] THEM

Children, obey your parents in the Lord, for this is right. Ephesians 6:1

Children, obey your parents in everything, for this is your acceptable duty in the Lord. Col. 3:20

2. AS A TEEN I HONOR THEM BY [ACCEPTING] AND [LISTENING TO] THEM

Listen to your father who begot you, and do not despise your mother when she is old. Proverbs 23:22

25Let your father and mother be glad; let her who bore you rejoice. 26My child, give me your heart, and let your eyes delight in my ways. Proverbs 23:25-26

3. AS AN ADULT, I HONOR THEM BY [AFFIRMING] & NOT [ABANDONING] THEM.

4 For God said, ‘Honor your father and your mother,’ and, ‘Whoever speaks evil of father or mother must surely die.’ 5 But you say that whoever tells father or mother, ‘Whatever support you might have had from me is given to God,’ then that person need not honor the father. 6 So, for the sake of your tradition, you make void the word of God. Matthew 15:4-6

A Word To Parents:--Be `Honorable'!

And, fathers, do not provoke your children to anger, but bring them up in the discipline and instruction of the Lord. Ephesians 6:4

“If any of you put a stumbling block before one of these little ones who believe in me, it would be better for you if a great millstone were fastened around your neck and you were drowned in the depth of the sea. Matt 18:6

A Word To Those Without Parents

9Do not hide your face from me. Do not turn your servant away in anger, you who have been my help. Do not cast me off, do not forsake me, O God of my salvation! 10If my father and mother forsake me, the Lord will take me up. Psalms 27:9-10
