Sabbath At The Synagogue

The synagogue was established during the Babylonian captivity for Jewish instruction
When Jesus was 13 He was required to start attending at the synagogue
the elders would sit in the center
the older you were the more to the center you were
the youngest would stand on the outside or in the back
the women would be in another section behind a curtain or lattice work
a high platform is there for the speaker to stand on
a blast of a trumpet would indicate the call to worship
The Life and Times of Jesus the Messiah (Chapter 10: The Synagogue at Nazareth—Synagogue-Worship and Arrangements)
Sabbath morn dawned, and early Jesus repaired to that Synagogue where, as a Child, a Youth, a Man, He had so often worshipped in the humble retirement of His rank, sitting, not up there among the elders and the honoured, but far back. The old well-known faces were around Him, the old well-remembered words and services fell on His ear. How different they had always been to Him than to them, with whom He had thus mingled in common worship
Alfred Erdsheim
they would recite
Deuteronomy 6:4–9 LSB
“Hear, O Israel! Yahweh is our God, Yahweh is one! “You shall love Yahweh your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your might. “These words, which I am commanding you today, shall be on your heart. “You shall teach them diligently to your sons and shall speak of them when you sit in your house and when you walk by the way and when you lie down and when you rise up. “You shall bind them as a sign on your hand, and they shall be as phylacteries between your eyes. “You shall write them on the doorposts of your house and on your gates.
Deuteronomy 11:13–21 LSB
“And it will be that, if you listen obediently to my commandments which I am commanding you today, to love Yahweh your God and to serve Him with all your heart and all your soul, that I, Yahweh, will give the rain for your land in its season, the early and late rains, that you may gather in your grain and your new wine and your oil. “And I will give grass in your fields for your cattle, and you will eat and be satisfied. “Beware lest your hearts be deceived, and you turn away and serve other gods and worship them, and the anger of Yahweh will be kindled against you, and He will shut up the heavens so that there will be no rain and the ground will not yield its fruit; and you will perish quickly from the good land which Yahweh is giving you. “You shall therefore place these words of mine on your heart and on your soul; and you shall bind them as a sign on your hand, and they shall be as phylacteries between your eyes. “And you shall teach them to your sons, speaking of them when you sit in your house and when you walk along the road and when you lie down and when you rise up. “And you shall write them on the doorposts of your house and on your gates, so that your days and the days of your sons may be multiplied on the land which Yahweh swore to your fathers to give them, as long as the heavens remain above the earth.
Numbers 15:37–41 LSB
Yahweh also spoke to Moses, saying, “Speak to the sons of Israel, and tell them that they shall make for themselves tassels on the corners of their garments throughout their generations, and that they shall put on the tassel of each corner a cord of blue. “And it shall be a tassel for you to look at and remember all the commandments of Yahweh, so as to do them and not follow after your own heart and your own eyes, after which you played the harlot, so that you may remember to do all My commandments and be holy to your God. “I am Yahweh your God who brought you out from the land of Egypt to be your God; I am Yahweh your God.”
next they would pray
a passage from the Torah would be read
a passage from the prophets
a sermon. a final blessing.
this is the synagogue that Jesus grew up in
as a group of boys to men
moving slowly toward the center seats of honor
this is the same group of peers that Jesus grew up with
this is where Jesus is going on this sabbath
Read Luke 4 14-30

Return To Galilee

V 14
there is a gap of about 12 months between 13-14
we find this gap in John 1-4.
Jesus was in Galilee went to Jerusalem and now is going back to Galilee
V 15
He was teaching in their Synagogues everywhere
a visiting rabbi would have the honor of presenting the sermon
since Jesus’ fame was increasing
and He taught in the power of the Spirit
and He taught with authority
He was given the Honor to teach
with the miracles and the teachings
He was praised by all
V 16
now He has come home, all are gathering to worship

Jesus Goes To Church

V 16 as was His custom
Jesus came to fulfill the law to keep it perfectly
Keeping the Sabbath is one of these commandments
a Question for you.
do we need to keep the Sabbath today
now we realize that the sabbath in now on Sunday
and we are now under the New Covenant
and the circumcision laws don’t apply
the levitical laws, eating, and ceremonial washing ect
but what about the 10 commandments?
are we supposed to keep them?
what does it say about the Sabbath?
Exodus 20:9–11 LSB
“Six days you shall labor and do all your work, but the seventh day is a sabbath of Yahweh your God; in it you shall not do any work, you or your son or your daughter, your male or your female slave or your cattle or your sojourner who is within your gates. “For in six days Yahweh made the heavens and the earth, the sea and all that is in them, and rested on the seventh day; therefore Yahweh blessed the sabbath day and made it holy.
Has this commandment changed?
is it out of date?
it is holy to God
it is holy to Jesus
watched a interview with a man who lost his job because they wanted him to work on Sunday
He chose to make the stand to commit Sunday to God
is Sunday just the second half of the weekend?
is Sunday the day you go to church and after??
for Jesus the Sabbath was 24 hours
God has given us a day of rest, He knows the human body will break down without rest
Do you honor God by keeping it holy / separated unto God
Jesus thought it was important to be in the house of worship on the Sabbath

They Kicked Him Out

V 22
they all marveled at one of their own has made it big
but they could never accept Him as the messiah
He is a nobody, Joseph’s son
V 28
the real Jesus came to church and it was not the one they had been looking for
the Jesus that you go to church to worship. is He the real Jesus?
is He the 1 true God? or a god
is the Jesus that you worship the Jesus of the Bible?
the savior and or Judge of all
If the real Jesus showed up at your worship and informed you that you are not worshipping Him
but that you are really worshipping satan
would you throw Him out?
If the real Jesus showed up at your church and pointed out your thoughts and sin would try to kill Him?
Who are you worshipping?
a Jesus made in your image?
MY GOD
a Jesus you made up in your head
or the Jesus of the Bible?
V 29
Jesus went to church in his home town and there was an attempted murder by his peers
the heart is deceitfully wicked
investigate your heart
what is the excuse you give your self for not making the sabbath holy unto the Lord
what Jesus are you worshipping?
if the real Jesus came to your church would you try to murder Him in your heart?
think on these things
confess and repent
