Review of the Feast of Tabernacles

Jesus was in Jerusalem for the Feast.
one of three great feasts (Passover/Unleavened Bread, and Pentecost (Feast of Weeks) are the other 2) that they made a pilgrimage to Jerusalem. Ex. 23, Lev. 23.
It was a feast of remembrance for the exodus years, living in booths.
It was t remind them of all God had done and how He provided for them.
Each day sacrifices of bulls, lambs, and a goat with grain and drink offerings were performed.
On the last day of the feast, the eight day, a water libation offering was done in remembrance of the water from the rock.
The last part of Chapter seven occurs on the last day of Sukkot.
Vv. 37-39: Living water.
Thirst, heart, and water.
Thirst: denotes an intense desire for fulfillment.
Like an obsession, quenching tour thirst becomes a priority.
It becomes so overwhelming it becomes our primary focus and desire.
What do we thirst for?
Peace?
Peace of surrender or the peace from achievement and success?
Satisfaction?
Satisfaction from the redemptive work of Christ or the satisfaction from the works of our hands?
Fulfillment?
Fulfillment that comes from living a life dedicated to God or living in the accomplishments of our own ambitions?
Contentment?
Are we content with who God is and what He has provided or do we chase after the prizes of this world for contentment.
We can have peace when we are content with our lives in Christ because He satisfied the payment for my sin bringing me the fulfillment of a life God desires for me.
How do we get this?
Thirst for Him!
Heart: The driving force and the place where our desires lie.
The Heart is wicked. Jer 17:9
Jeremiah 17:9 NKJV
“The heart is deceitful above all things, And desperately wicked; Who can know it?
Mark 7:21–23 NKJV
For from within, out of the heart of men, proceed evil thoughts, adulteries, fornications, murders, thefts, covetousness, wickedness, deceit, lewdness, an evil eye, blasphemy, pride, foolishness. All these evil things come from within and defile a man.”
Romans 1:21 NKJV
because, although they knew God, they did not glorify Him as God, nor were thankful, but became futile in their thoughts, and their foolish hearts were darkened.
How can we change heart that is born wicked?
Jesus said believe in Me.
We cant change our heart only God can.
When we begin to desire the things of God instead of this world, the desires of our heart changes.
All we need is faith, common sense sanctified, to take the logical leap of faith into belief.
Water: The Holy Spirit.
Water quenches our physical thirst.
The Holy Spirit quenches our spiritual thirst.
Isaiah 44:3 NKJV
For I will pour water on him who is thirsty, And floods on the dry ground; I will pour My Spirit on your descendants, And My blessing on your offspring;
Isaiah 55:1 NKJV
“Ho! Everyone who thirsts, Come to the waters; And you who have no money, Come, buy and eat. Yes, come, buy wine and milk Without money and without price.
Some believe that Jesus stood up and said this during the water libation.
Water from a rock.
Twice Moses was instructed to bring water from a rock.
Exodus 17:5–7 NKJV
And the Lord said to Moses, “Go on before the people, and take with you some of the elders of Israel. Also take in your hand your rod with which you struck the river, and go. Behold, I will stand before you there on the rock in Horeb; and you shall strike the rock, and water will come out of it, that the people may drink.” And Moses did so in the sight of the elders of Israel. So he called the name of the place Massah and Meribah, because of the contention of the children of Israel, and because they tempted the Lord, saying, “Is the Lord among us or not?”
Moses struck the rock to bring water.
Numbers 20:7–11 NKJV
Then the Lord spoke to Moses, saying, “Take the rod; you and your brother Aaron gather the congregation together. Speak to the rock before their eyes, and it will yield its water; thus you shall bring water for them out of the rock, and give drink to the congregation and their animals.” So Moses took the rod from before the Lord as He commanded him. And Moses and Aaron gathered the assembly together before the rock; and he said to them, “Hear now, you rebels! Must we bring water for you out of this rock?” Then Moses lifted his hand and struck the rock twice with his rod; and water came out abundantly, and the congregation and their animals drank.
Moses was supposed to speak to the rock to bring forth water.
The difference.
Jesus is the rock Matt. 16:17-18
Matthew 16:16–18 NKJV
Simon Peter answered and said, “You are the Christ, the Son of the living God.” Jesus answered and said to him, “Blessed are you, Simon Bar-Jonah, for flesh and blood has not revealed this to you, but My Father who is in heaven. And I also say to you that you are Peter, and on this rock I will build My church, and the gates of Hades shall not prevail against it.
Jesus had to be struck down for our sin so that we could receive the living water of the Holy Spirit.
The second time Moses was supposed to speak not strike the rock.
I can see a correlation between Moses and the Pharisees here.
Moses lack of respect and awe for God cost him entrance into the promised land.
God wanted him to speak to the rock, we can speak to God and bring our needs to Him.
Like Moses, the Pharisees lack of respect for God and hatred for Jesus, had caused them to strike down the Rock, Jesus, in anger, which carried the Holy Spirit.
Jesus had to die so He could release His Spirit to us.
Filled with living water.
If we are filled with living water, is it pouring out over everyone we meet?
Is it a river or a trickle, or even worse, stagnant?
Vv. 40-44: Jesus.
The question of the ages.
His statement brought three thoughts to the people concerning His identity.
He was the Prophet. Deuteronomy 18:15
Deuteronomy 18:15 NKJV
“The Lord your God will raise up for you a Prophet like me from your midst, from your brethren. Him you shall hear,
Deuteronomy 18:18 NKJV
I will raise up for them a Prophet like you from among their brethren, and will put My words in His mouth, and He shall speak to them all that I command Him.
He is the Christ.
Disbelief.
Bethlehem or Galilee.
They didn't know much about the Messiahs arrival.
They knew He would be from Bethlehem and from the line of David.
They never took the time to get to know the Messiah they sought.
He was from Bethlehem He just lived in Galilee.
Jesus didn't just split time His statement brought division.
Matthew 10:34–35 NKJV
“Do not think that I came to bring peace on earth. I did not come to bring peace but a sword. For I have come to ‘set a man against his father, a daughter against her mother, and a daughter-in-law against her mother-in-law’;
Luke 12:51–52 NKJV
Do you suppose that I came to give peace on earth? I tell you, not at all, but rather division. For from now on five in one house will be divided: three against two, and two against three.
How do you hold Jesus?
Do you hold Him with contempt and anger or does He hold you hold of Him as Savior.
Vv. 45-53: Me.
The Temple Guard.
They had went to arrest Jesus but came back empty handed.
They could have used any number of excuses but came with this.
They went to arrest Jesus but He arrested them.
The Pharisees.
Arrogant condescension.
They believed that no one of any intelligence would fall for Jesus.
They considered the people they were to minister to accursed.
What does that say of their ministry to the people?
Nicodemus.
Nicodemus took the time to listen and evaluate as they all should.
They were the spiritual gatekeepers for the people and the faith.
They never came with any openness just preconceived arrogance.
Nicodemus tried to apply the laws of their faith they hold so dear only to be ridiculed and scorned.
Their blind hatred clouded their own knowledge.
Jonah came from Galilee, and some think that Hosea, Nahum Elijah, and Elisha may have come from the area as well.
Closing.
What is our reaction to who Jesus is?
We all have a “ME” question to ask.
What do we do with the Jesus.
What is my relationship with Jesus, How close are we?
Enoch Gen. 5:24 “And Enoch walked with God; and he was not, for God took him.”
How close and intimate is our walk with God?
Are we spilling out the Holy Spirit like a torrent?
It can if we thirst for Him, seek Him daily in His Word, Speak to Him constantly, its the only way to find Peace, Contentment, Satisfaction and Fulfillment in this dark world.
