Review & Overview

1. Previous Study’s Review

In chps.18… we finished the series called “God, Preserving the Undeserving”.
We saw that Moses’s father in Law Jethro hears of the Testimony of God’s Preservation.
And then Moses Communicates the testimony and as a result Jethro who was a pagan priest converts and believes in the God of the Bible.
Then we saw that there was Wisdom from God’s Preservation - God gave Moses wisdom because the people of God were too dependent on Moses and Moses giving council to 2 million people was a burden.
So he raised people up to help him with the work load.

2. Current Study’s Overview

CHAPTERS 1-18 dealt with the redemption from Egypt
Ch. 1 - was saw the need for redemption
ch. 2-3 - The preparation of the leaders for redemption.
Ch. 5-15 - The Power of God for Redemption - 10 plagues
Ch. 16-18 - The Preservation of Israel in Redemption - Series we just finished.
Now as we come to Ch. 19 we go from the redemption from Egypt to the Revelation from God.
Moses & the Children of Israel are at Mt. Sinai…  Mt. Horeb…  the Mt. of God…
Here Moses will go up the mountain to Hear from the Lord…      regarding the 10 commandments…       the information about the Tabernacle & its furniture…       as well as various laws & sacrifices…
In fact all the events we’ll read about from Ex.19: thru Num.10:   happened at Mt. Sinai or Mt. Horeb.    During about a 1 Year period of time…       Num.10:11.
4 things to note…

1. The Faithfulness of the Lord Vs. 1-4

So the Lord tells Moses to remind the people of His Faithfulness in bringing them out of Egypt…
How He Destroyed the Egyptians…       &     Delivered them from the hand of the Egyptians…
How He bore them on Eagles wings…    turn Deut.32:9-12, in the Song of Moses, Moses further expands on this idea…           read.
Deuteronomy 32:9–12 NKJV
9 For the Lord’s portion is His people; Jacob is the place of His inheritance. 10 “He found him in a desert land And in the wasteland, a howling wilderness; He encircled him, He instructed him, He kept him as the apple of His eye. 11 As an eagle stirs up its nest, Hovers over its young, Spreading out its wings, taking them up, Carrying them on its wings, 12 So the Lord alone led him, And there was no foreign god with him.
The picture is a mother eagle stirring up the nest to get the young eaglets out of the nest... so they would fly.
The mother eagle would literally knock them out of the nest… they would flap & flutter as they fell toward the ground…
then at the last second before hitting the ground the mother eagle would swoop in and save them…
Its not only a picture of how God dealt with Israel in the wilderness…  but  how He will deal with Israel during the tribulation, Rev.12:14…      but     it’s also a picture of how God deals with us…
APPLICATION: Because sometimes we, like those baby eaglets get pretty comfortable in our nests…
But God comes alone and throws us out of the nest…    He stirs things up…    Not to burn us out…   but to Build us up…       to grow us…       mature us…       stretch us…
But no matter how bad things might get we don’t have to worry…   He’s always there ready to catch us…
1 Corinthians 10:13 NKJV
13 No temptation has overtaken you except such as is common to man; but God is faithful, who will not allow you to be tempted beyond what you are able, but with the temptation will also make the way of escape, that you may be able to bear it.

2. The Obedience to the Lord Vs. 5-6

Through out the scriptures we see a correlation between Obedience…     &     Blessing…
Deut.28:1 if you obey My commandments the blessings…     vs.15 if you do not obey the curses…
So with obedience comes the blessings, 3 fold:
Special Treasure.
Kingdom of Priests.
Holy Nation.
So here God establishes a Conditional Covenant…        If…      then…
And here is a good question for us: isn’t that just for the Old Testament…       well, it would seem there is a parallel for us today…   not as it pertains to the gift of God’s grace for eternal life…     but    God’s blessing in everyday life…
John 13:17  If you know these things, blessed are you if you do them…
John 13:17 NKJV
17 If you know these things, blessed are you if you do them.
Luke 11:28  Blessed are they that hear the word of God, and keep it…
Luke 11:28 NKJV
28 But He said, “More than that, blessed are those who hear the word of God and keep it!”
Rev 22:14  Blessed are those who do His commandments…
Revelation 22:14 NKJV
14 Blessed are those who do His commandments, that they may have the right to the tree of life, and may enter through the gates into the city.
So apparently there is a correlation between obedience & blessings…
But as we’ve mentioned eternal life is based on God’s Unconditional Covenant…   it’s not dependent on what we do…       but      what Christ has done…         as a result of that…
1 Peter 2:9 you are a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, His own special people.
1 Peter 2:9 NKJV
9 But you are a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, His own special people, that you may proclaim the praises of Him who called you out of darkness into His marvelous light;

3.  Being Set Apart for the Lord Vs. 7-15

3.1 Being Set Apart Is A Work of the Lord Vs.7-8

Moses told the people that God will make them a special treasure, kingdom of priests a holy nation, if they would just obey Him…        they whole heartedly said,   Yes Lord we will obey You …
As we know that didn’t turn out so well …       their promise to obey didn’t last very long…
APPLICATION: Why?…  the same reason ours don’t…   have you ever said, ok Lord I’m going to obey You…  and then 10 minutes later fall terribly short?
Problem is we try to obey the Lord in our own strength…     our own power…   our own effort… We need help…
Rom.1:5 we’ve been given grace & apostleship for obedience…
Romans 1:5 NKJV
5 Through Him we have received grace and apostleship for obedience to the faith among all nations for His name,

3.2 Being Set Apart Involves Our Position Vs.9-15

The people were to be sanctified, purified, set apart physically before they could approach the Lord.
Here Moses deals with the outer man…      but     in Psl.24:3-5 David deals with the inner man…
Psalm 24:3–5 NKJV
3 Who may ascend into the hill of the Lord? Or who may stand in His holy place? 4 He who has clean hands and a pure heart, Who has not lifted up his soul to an idol, Nor sworn deceitfully. 5 He shall receive blessing from the Lord, And righteousness from the God of his salvation.
So sanctification is not just about the outward man…        but        the inward man…
Matt 23:28 outwardly you appear righteous to men, but inside you are full of hypocrisy & lawlessness...
Matthew 23:28 NKJV
28 Even so you also outwardly appear righteous to men, but inside you are full of hypocrisy and lawlessness.
APPLICATION: Being sanctified inwardly is a work of the Cross…   the moment we’re justified we are sanctified…
Heb 10:10 we have been sanctified through the offering of the body of Jesus Christ once for all…
Hebrews 10:10 NKJV
10 By that will we have been sanctified through the offering of the body of Jesus Christ once for all.
So positionally we’re sanctified, set apart, holy…    but    practically we are still being set apart…       we are still growing…      maturing…     learning…

4.  The Meeting with the Lord Vs. 16-25

4.1 Involves Fear Vs.16

back in vs.11 God said He would appear in 3 days…    &   He did just as He said He would…
The Lord is always faithful to His Word…  if God said it you can count on it…  it will come to pass...
2 Cor.1:20 all of God’s promises are yes and amen…
But the people trembled…    this was a terrifying sight…       in fact in
Heb.12:21 its recorded that Moses was exceedingly afraid and trembled…
Heb.10:31 it’s a fearful thing to fall into the hands of the living God…
Hebrews 12:21 NKJV
21 And so terrifying was the sight that Moses said, “I am exceedingly afraid and trembling.”)
Hebrews 10:31 NKJV
31 It is a fearful thing to fall into the hands of the living God.
APPLICATION: I fear many of us have lost the fear of the Lord…   we have a flippant, casual type of attitude when it comes to God…
Prov.9:10 the fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom…
Proverbs 9:10 NKJV
10 “The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom, And the knowledge of the Holy One is understanding.

4.2 Involves a Barrier Vs. 17-25

in vs.12 God said to set boundaries around the mountain so nobody could come up the mountain…
So Moses did that, but in vs.21 God tells him to go back down and warn the people about the penalty for breeching the boundaries…
in vs.23 Moses argues a bit with the Lord, but to no avail…
APPLICATION: It’s always a Bad idea to Argue with God…      In affect we’re saying Lord I know better…
But the people couldn’t approach the mountain of God, there was a boundary a barrier that stoped them…
APPLICATION: Interesting parallel for us…  because there is a barrier that prevents us from approaching God…  Sin.
Isa.59:2 your iniquities have separated you from God, you sins have hidden His face from you…
But praise the God we’re not coming to this mountain we’re coming to a different one… read Heb.12:18
Isaiah 59:2 NKJV
2 But your iniquities have separated you from your God; And your sins have hidden His face from you, So that He will not hear.
Hebrews 12:18–19 NKJV
18 For you have not come to the mountain that may be touched and that burned with fire, and to blackness and darkness and tempest, 19 and the sound of a trumpet and the voice of words, so that those who heard it begged that the word should not be spoken to them anymore.
Hebrews 12:20–21 NKJV
20 (For they could not endure what was commanded: “And if so much as a beast touches the mountain, it shall be stoned or shot with an arrow.” 21 And so terrifying was the sight that Moses said, “I am exceedingly afraid and trembling.”)
Hebrews 12:22–23 NKJV
22 But you have come to Mount Zion and to the city of the living God, the heavenly Jerusalem, to an innumerable company of angels, 23 to the general assembly and church of the firstborn who are registered in heaven, to God the Judge of all, to the spirits of just men made perfect,
Hebrews 12:24 NKJV
24 to Jesus the Mediator of the new covenant, and to the blood of sprinkling that speaks better things than that of Abel.
