Previous Memory Verse

Recite Memory Verse from last week.
Romans 1:16: “For I am not ashamed of the gospel, for it is the power of God for salvation to everyone who believes, to the Jew first and also to the Greek.”
Update Scoreboard.

Introduction

Last week we learned about the practice of fasting (Matt. 6:16-18).
We were challenged to skip one snack/meal (if able).
Did you do it?

Today we are going to learn about finding treasure.

Everyone is seeking after something (friends, dates, toys, games, etc.). But what happens once we finally get what we want?
Friends come and go; sometimes there’s breakups; toys get old; games get boring. We are always searching for the next best thing.
But when we align our desires with God’s (loving Him and sharing Him with others), we will experience an everlasting joy that does not fade away.

Passage

GOD AND POSSESSIONS

19 “Don’t store up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy and where thieves break in and steal.

20 But store up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust destroys, and where thieves don’t break in and steal.

21 For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.

22 “The eye is the lamp of the body. If your eye is healthy, your whole body will be full of light.

23 But if your eye is bad, your whole body will be full of darkness. So if the light within you is darkness, how deep is that darkness!

24 “No one can serve two masters, since either he will hate one and love the other, or he will be devoted to one and despise the other. You cannot serve both God and money.

Five W’s

Who: (speaker): Jesus, (audience): disciples, thieves, masters, and God.
When: while we live on earth.
Where: earth and heaven.
What: Explain in your own words what is happening in this passage.
Key verse: “For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.”
Why: because we are all tempted to seek after worldly things instead of God.

People’s choices and actions are shaped by the things they cherish most.

Jesus says that we cannot serve two masters.
That means either we are serving God and hating the devil;
or we are serving the devil (chasing after the world) and hating God.
Who’s your master? Whose team are you on?

How

The principle of this passage is to serve God above all.
How: This week I will spend 10 minutes with God instead of (write down something you enjoy).

New Memory Verse

Romans 3:10: “just as it is written, “There is no one righteous, not even one;”
