Introduction

Today we’re going to examine this Scripture and the people therein and pose the question - Who are You? Which one of these people here at Mt. Sinai best describes you?
Now I want to caution you on this one thing: It’s always easiest to look in the mirror with Rose-colored glasses. It’s far easier to accentuate the positives in our actions & personalities and ignore the negatives, but the problem with that is that God will not do the same.
As we go down through this Scripture, we’re going to start from the top-down. Those that are closest to God and those that are furthest away (Though the last two are debatable).
(Background) Prior to our text, this people who are free at the base of Mt. Sinai were enslaved in Egypt. For over 400 years, the COI were slaves to Pharaoh in Egypt. And they were there - until God called a man to serve by the name of Moses.
This is of course who we’re speaking of first. The one who at Sinai in that day who was closest unto God

I. Are you Moses?

As we look at this man Moses and where he’s at in life, I want you to examine your walk with God and ask yourself ‘Am I a Moses?’
He Delivered Souls from Slavery
As we begin the book of Exodus, we are introduced to two things:
Ch. 1 - The Israelites New Reality
We see that as they were once guests, a new Pharaoh rose up and the COI became reviled in his sight and instead of treating them as honored guests, they were enslaved by the Egyptians
Ch. 2 - A Man by the name of Moses
Well, as we’re introduced unto him, he’s but a babe and we’re told of his miraculous salvation from the Judgment he was under.
After Moses was adopted by Pharaoh’s daughter, we know nothing more of him until he’s 40yo where he murders an Egyptian and then flees. Another 40y passes Moses is married and tending flocks on the backside of Horeb when he first meets God.
God calls Moses out of the midst of a bush that was burning, but not consumed, and He calls for Moses to go down and lead God’s People out of Egypt.
After much cajoling, Moses goes boldly unto Pharaoh: Ex. 5:1 “And afterward Moses and Aaron went in, and told Pharaoh, Thus saith the Lord God of Israel, Let my people go, that they may hold a feast unto me in the wilderness.” Then we see Pharaoh’s reply: Ex. 5:2 “And Pharaoh said, Who is the Lord, that I should obey his voice to let Israel go? I know not the Lord, neither will I let Israel go.”
Over the course of the next several months, Pharaoh would come to know the LORD - not in a personal way, but rather by way of incurring the wrath of God upon himself. For God would bring Judgment’s down upon Egypt until Pharaoh knew who he was dealing with & let them go.
Water to blood; Frogs, Lice, Flies, Pestilence, Boils, Fiery Hail, Locusts, Darkness & Death of the Firstborn
After that, Pharaoh let them go - so Moses led them out of Slavery & across the Red Sea.
Church, if you’re going to be like Moses, then you are first and foremost going to have to be busy about leading souls out of the slavery of sin. I’m talking about being a soul-winner.
Pr. 11:30 “The fruit of the righteous is a tree of life; And he that winneth souls is wise.”
The truth of the matter is, if you’re not concerned about souls, then you’re not a disciple of Christ. (I didn’t say you weren’t a Christian, but you’re not a ‘disciplined follower’).
Jesus' Mission Statement: Luk. 19:10 “For the Son of man is come to seek and to save that which was lost.”
Jesus’ Dedication at the end of His earthly ministry: Joh. 19:30 “When Jesus therefore had received the vinegar, he said, It is finished: and he bowed his head, and gave up the ghost.”
Jesus’ Commission: Mar. 16:15 “And he said unto them, Go ye into all the world, and preach the gospel to every creature.
You can’t get around this fact! Either you care about lost souls and you’re submitting yourself unto God to be used to deliver lost souls - or you’re not Christ’s Disciple - and you’re certainly not the Moses of the story! This is what Jesus’ ministry was all about!
Are you Moses? Are you Delivering Souls from Slavery?
He Drew Nigh Unto the LORD (Ex.24:12-18)
There are two things to notice in this passage:
The Call (v12)
We see here that God called Moses to come closer to Him.
The Response (v13)
Moses rose up & drew closer unto Him.
God didn’t have to ask him twice...
Understand this church: While God’s call unto Moses to draw near was rather unique, God calls all to draw near unto Him today!
Ps. 27:8 “When thou saidst, Seek ye my face; my heart said unto thee, Thy face, Lord, will I seek.”
Jam. 4:7-8 “Submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you. Draw nigh to God, and he will draw nigh to you. Cleanse your hands, ye sinners; and purify your hearts, ye double minded.”
Mat. 11:28-29 “Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you, and learn of me; for I am meek and lowly in heart: and ye shall find rest unto your souls.”
This is Christ’s desire - to be close to you.
So me let ask you: How close are you to Christ? Are you like Moses and you’ve heard the call and rose up to draw nigh?
Some might ask - how do we draw nigh?
Study His Word
Commune with Him in Prayer
Submerse yourself in the Things of God
If you want to draw closer unto God, this is how you do it. It’s not a secret & it’s not rocket science - So let me ask you are you drawing closer unto God?
How much time are you spending in His Word?
How much time are you spending in Prayer?
Are you faithful unto the things of God?
Are you here when the doors are open? Are you telling others about Christ? Are you trying to see how you can better serve Him?
Moses drew nigh unto the LORD - are you the Moses of the story?
He Desired to See the LORD (Ex. 33:17-23)
Ex. 33:18 “And he said, I beseech thee, shew me thy glory.”
Moses had a desire to see God. He longed for his faith to become sight!
How about you? Now, one day my faith will be sight when I see Jesus face to face - and I long for that day. However, I’m speaking of seeing God in a different manner. I’m talking about seeing God’s Glory exhibited - seeing God move.
You know, it’s a glorious thing when we see someone pass from death unto life!
It’s a glorious thing when we see Christians get serious about Christ!
It’s a glorious thing to see revival take place!
So when we’re talking about desiring to see God’s Glory, are you desirous to see those things?
Do you want to see souls saved? Are you praying for it? Are you fasting over it? Are you telling people about Christ? Are you letting Christ use to to that end?
Do you want to see others excited about the things of God? Are YOU? Do people see you excited for Sunday to come?
Do you want to see Revival in our country? Are you fostering revival in your own heart?
You see, if you desire to see the Glory of God, then there are things that you can do to facilitate that!
Moses Desired to see God - are you the Moses of the story?
He Demonstrated Obedience Unto the LORD
Moses wasn’t perfect. But by & large, he was obedient unto the LORD.
Now one thing that I want to point out is that his obedience didn’t happen unto late in his life. But even still he was able to make a difference in the lives of countless people - not just in Egypt or the wilderness over the course of 40 years, but literally unto the world over the last 3,500 years!
Even after death, Moses was able to impact a multitude - because he was obedient unto the LORD
Church what about you? Are you obedient unto the LORD
I pointed out the fact that Moses lived 120 years, but was only obedient in the last 1/3rd of his life. You may not have demonstrated obedience unto the LORD before, but there’s nothing stopping you from obeying the LORD now!
If you are to be the Moses of the story, you must Demonstrate Obedience
He had Discernment (v18)
As Moses & Joshua head down from the mountain, they begin to hear noises. Joshua says: Ex. 32:17 “And when Joshua heard the noise of the people as they shouted, he said unto Moses, There is a noise of war in the camp.” Joshua thought that the COI had been attacked! He thought there was a great battle brewing down amongst his people. But then we see Moses’ response: Ex. 32:18 “And he said, It is not the voice of them that shout for mastery, neither is it the voice of them that cry for being overcome: but the noise of them that sing do I hear.”
Moses was able to discern the truth as to what was taken place. He understood what was going on down there was ungodly.
If you’re to be the Moses of the story, you need to have discernment. This is something that is critically lacking in the church today. The ability to discern one thing from another - especially to discern right from wrong, good from bad & Godly and that which is ungodly.
Notice something here: Why do you think that Moses was able to discern the truth when Joshua (another Godly man) wasn’t? Then answer is found in v7-8. You see, God told him.
(Ill.) I think in most (if not all) Christians lives, we begin our walk with Christ with an understanding that there are a few Godly things, and a few ungodly things and MOST things fell in between. And that as long as you’re not way over here doing these few things, then God is pleased with you in your walk.
But as I’ve grown in wisdom & understanding, I have come to realize a few things. That space in the middle is far smaller than what it used to be. Secondly, even with those things in the middle, if approached incorrectly become ungodly quick.
One idol in this community is sports. Is there anything inherently wicked about sports? No. But more often than not, it assumes an ungodly place in the home and hearts of Christians and it becomes an idol and ungodly unto them.
If you want to grow in discernment and be able to understand what is good & what is a stumbling block, God will tell you! You just have to listen! You must get in His Word and be open to the answer!
If you’re going to be the Moses of the Story, you must have Discernment
He Drew a Line in the Sand (v26)
In v26 we see Moses doing something important. He said ‘Hey boys, if you’re on the LORD’s side, come with me - gird you on your sword for it’s time to fight! Somewhere along the line (I suspect during the ungodly hippie movement - the same place we got the worldly music) people got to thinking that Christianity was supposed to be sissy-fied & non-confrontational.
Let me say this: The church has enough sissy’s, what it needs now is more people like Jesus! Jesus was anything BUT a sissy!
Look at Mat. 23 just to see how bold Jesus was!
You want to know how tough Jesus is? Just look at what He endured on the Cross for you and me, knowing that He didn’t have to!
Church it’s time to stand up and fight! It’s time to stand up and say enough it enough!
If you want to be the Moses of the story, you’d better be prepared to stand up and declare ‘Hey, if you’re on the LORD’s side, then get by me - cause we’re going to battle for what’s right!’
Moses drew a line in the sand
He Determined to Sacrifice for the People (v31-32)
Even after the people had sinned such great wickedness against God, Moses was willing to give his own life for their sin to be forgiven.
Notice, this is the second time in this chapter alone that Moses sought God for an ungodly people.
Church, if you’re going to be the Moses of the story, you must be willing to sacrifice in order for people’s sins to be forgiven.
If we’re going to see God use this church to be the light that He intends for us to be, we must Sacrifice! We must sacrifice:
What’s Comfortable to us
What’s Desirable to the Flesh
Our Pride
Our Time
Moses was willing to trade his life for theirs
Jesus was willing to give His life for yours
What are you willing to give???

Conclusion

So the question was ‘Am I a Moses?’ Are you? If not, why not? Do you desire to be? Why can’t you be?
You can be the Moses of your own story - but you have to answer the call of the LORD
Unto Salvation
Unto Service
