Be Married

Romans 7:1–6 NKJV

1 Or do you not know, brethren (for I speak to those who know the law), that the law has dominion over a man as long as he lives? 2 For the woman who has a husband is bound by the law to her husband as long as he lives. But if the husband dies, she is released from the law of her husband. 3 So then if, while her husband lives, she marries another man, she will be called an adulteress; but if her husband dies, she is free from that law, so that she is no adulteress, though she has married another man. 4 Therefore, my brethren, you also have become dead to the law through the body of Christ, that you may be married to another—to Him who was raised from the dead, that we should bear fruit to God. 5 For when we were in the flesh, the sinful passions which were aroused by the law were at work in our members to bear fruit to death. 6 But now we have been delivered from the law, having died to what we were held by, so that we should serve in the newness of the Spirit and not in the oldness of the letter.

Married: to marry ⇔ belong to a man v. — to become the wife of a man; conceived of as becoming the property of the man.

Marriage is a WILLING commitment of LOVE!

It’s a RELATIONSHIP! A marriage without love is MISERY!!!

Jesus set us from from EVERY ASPECT of the law, so that our relationship with Him can FINALLY be about NOTHING ELSE! Love, ONLY!

Paul introduces the idea of no longer being in the flesh!

Romans 4:1–2 NKJV

1 What then shall we say that Abraham our father has found according to the flesh? 2 For if Abraham was justified by works, he has something to boast about, but not before God.

The idea of “the flesh” is the idea that we are justified, or holy, or pleasing to God, by the things done by our own hands!

THAT is what we are free from!

Why?

so that we could be married to another!

so that we could server in the NEWNESS OF THE SPIRIT!!!

when we’re “in the flesh” or in other words, believing that any product of our flesh is pleasing to God, sinful passions are aroused BY THE LAW!!!

It’s when we FULLY and FINALLY let go of products of our flesh being pleasing to God EVER, that our sinful passions no longer get aroused by the law!

Jesus didn’t just set us free from the REQUIREMENT of the law, He set us free from ALL THE EFFECTS of the law!

Why?

SO WE CAN BE MARRIED!!!

Romans 7:7–8 NKJV

7 What shall we say then? Is the law sin? Certainly not! On the contrary, I would not have known sin except through the law. For I would not have known covetousness unless the law had said, “You shall not covet.” 8 But sin, taking opportunity by the commandment, produced in me all manner of evil desire. For apart from the law sin was dead.

So many of us have a million reasons for obeying Jesus.

We feel like we’ll suffer if we don’t.

We’ll be punished if we don’t.

We’ll be condemned if we don’t.

God will be:

mad

disappointed

angry

withholding

punishing/cursing us

We’ll only be blessed if we obey.

We want to look good in front of others!
