As we continue to look at Romans chapter 6 I want to look at verses 12 through 14 today.
If we have truly died to sin as was discussed earlier in this chapter, we need to realize that we have just done just that….DIED
I want us to look at Romans 6:12-14 and see one main point today…Get Sin Out Of Your Life!!!!!
12 Let not sin therefore reign in your mortal body, to make you obey its passions.
13 Do not present your members to sin as instruments for unrighteousness, but present yourselves to God as those who have been brought from death to life, and your members to God as instruments for righteousness.
14 For sin will have no dominion over you, since you are not under law but under grace.
LET NOT SIN REIGN...
LET NOT SIN REIGN...
Before we are saved, we are slaves to sin. Sin is our master rather than God. Ourselves are our masters rather than God, the world is our master rather than God. Therefore, when we are saved, we are saying that we no longer will let sin rule our lives but rather we will let Jesus rule our world.
Just like in the garden of Eden, ADAM AND EVE had a choice to give into sin, or to deny it. We must do the same thing. Even though we are saved, we still have free will. It is in the free will that we still have the right to choose send or choose God. As we talked about last week, it all depends on who controls your life God for you. You have to decide! It’s your choice!
That is why the apostle Paul is telling the Romans that after they have died the saying don’t give into it anymore.
...In Your Mortal Body (Romans 6:12b)
...In Your Mortal Body (Romans 6:12b)
Your physical body is dying. I hate to break that news to you but it is. However, your soul will live forever in one of 2 places Heaven or Hell!
there are some who claim that heaven is a real place but hell is not. Folks, if heaven is real, hell must be real. not only that, the bible talks of a place called hades/hell!!! It’s REAL!!!!
So…When we get saved, our soul is saved but this fleshly body that we are living in will still die. It is still the flesh of sin and must die. It’s interesting that Paul uses the wording here Mortal Body. It is to remind us that even as saved people that we are still going to struggle and battle with sin in this earthly body. However, as mentioned earlier in verse 12, we are not to let sin rule our lives.
I love how the Bible Knowledge Commentary described this part...
In your mortal body means that sin manifests itself through one’s physical actions in this body. The Greek here stresses that the body is mortal or dying. Perhaps this suggests the foolishness of giving in to the desires of a body that is transitory and decaying. To give in to a dying master is strange indeed.
When we die the earthly death and when the rapture takes place our bodies are “Changed” But until then, we must realize that we are still living in the flesh in this world. However, we are living in this world but we are not to be of the world.
In Jesus’ prayer in John 17, Jesus prayed to God saying that we are not of this world as He is not of the world
16 They are not of the world, just as I am not of the world.
So if we are not of this World, where is our true citizenship…HEAVEN!!!!!
20 But our citizenship is in heaven, and from it we await a Savior, the Lord Jesus Christ,
21 who will transform our lowly body to be like his glorious body, by the power that enables him even to subject all things to himself.
50 I tell you this, brothers: flesh and blood cannot inherit the kingdom of God, nor does the perishable inherit the imperishable.
51 Behold! I tell you a mystery. We shall not all sleep, but we shall all be changed,
52 in a moment, in the twinkling of an eye, at the last trumpet. For the trumpet will sound, and the dead will be raised imperishable, and we shall be changed.
53 For this perishable body must put on the imperishable, and this mortal body must put on immortality.
54 When the perishable puts on the imperishable, and the mortal puts on immortality, then shall come to pass the saying that is written: “Death is swallowed up in victory.”
While we are still living in this mortal body as Paul calls it, that means we are still in the flesh. That means that we still have the sin nature in our dying body. However, while our body is dying, our spirit is fully alive. Let Christ Rule In You Rather Than Sin so you won’t obey the lust of your flesh!!!!
…To Make You Obey Its Passions (Romans 6:12c)
…To Make You Obey Its Passions (Romans 6:12c)
The “It” here is the fleshly mortal body.
John MacArthur Said This...
Because of their connection with the world, our bodily lusts cry out for fulfillment. The brain and thinking processes are also a part of the body, and demand that their lusts be obeyed. Paul was saying in verse 12 that sin can dominate the believer if he allows that to happen. If the believer feeds the body's lusts and entertains it with temptation, he will be dominated by it. All the sensory factors in the body that are exposed to the world's evil system can easily become channels for temptation and sin. The believer's body of sin will dominate if it is not mastered.
Key factors in living the Christian life are to obey God and deny temptation. It is invalid to say as some have said, "Let go and let God" or "I am to do nothing and God will do it all." Holiness is not an option for the believer; it is a command. As the believer endeavors to become more holy, God will infuse him with the ability to accomplish that task. Paul had that in mind when he said to the Philippians, "Work out your own salvation with fear and trembling. For it is God who worketh in you both to will and to do of his good pleasure" (Phil. 2:12-13). The sanctification Paul was speaking about here will result only as the believer is obedience in pursuing the perfect will of God.
Holiness in the believer's life is not an instantaneous reality, but a moment-by-moment process.
If you are giving into the the passions of the mortal body then you are not seeking, following, and obeying Christ. James 4:17 gives us a great thought. If you are saved and know that you are not doing what God wants you to do, then you are giving into the sin nature of your life rather than the God nature of your life.
17 So whoever knows the right thing to do and fails to do it, for him it is sin.
this takes us back to verse 1…when we are saved, we are not to continue in sin. You can’t live anyway you want to…If the Bible calls is wrong…it’s wrong.
All of us at one time or another does something that we know is wrong but we do it anyway.
That one little drug won’t hurt
That little white lie won’t hurt
This company has so much, they won’t miss just a little item.
I can have sex with them one time, what will it hurt.
I could go on all day. Folks, sin is sin and it hurts God most of all when we sin. Especially when one of His redeemed sins…Don’t Give In to It!!!
This is why the very first thing that must be done to be a follower of Christ is to Crucify your own desires and will and seek First the Kingdom of God.
33 But seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things will be added to you.
Mention The Richard Ross Facebook Post from Yesterday...
If Paul were alive and preaching in our churches, would he say:
“I’m astonished how quickly you have turned from the Gospel. You seek first the American dream instead of the Kingdom of God—and you are leading your children to do the same.”
Don’t Seek Self, Seek God… (Romans 6:13)
Don’t Seek Self, Seek God… (Romans 6:13)
We just talked about Matthew 6:33
33 But seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things will be added to you.
Look at Romans 12:1-2
1 I appeal to you therefore, brothers, by the mercies of God, to present your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and acceptable to God, which is your spiritual worship.
2 Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that by testing you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect.
The Promise (Romans 6:14)
The Promise (Romans 6:14)
When we fully Surrender to Christ, we are no longer ruled by sin because we are under Grace. The curse of sin is broken in your lives when we are redeemed by the blood of Christ. It is the Free Gift of Grace that God gives us that makes this possible.
Be an Overcomer:
So how can I overcome these attacks or Temptations to sin?
You must surrender your life to Christ
Begin your day and the word of God.
Spend time in prayer.
Surround yourself with the people of God for accountability.
Realize when you are walking away from God and repent and turn back
Make the decision daily to live for God.
