To Judge Or Not To Judge

Notes
Transcript
The focus is no so much on the judgement of others as it is on the impartial judgement of God. The partiality of our judgement is in contrast the God’s impartial judgement. vs. 1-3
JUDGE RIGHTEOUSLY
I. OUR PERSONAL JUDGEMENT CAN BE MISCONSTRUED
A. WE ARE NOT THE MORAL COMPASS OF LIFE V.1
Romans 2:1 CSB
1 Therefore, every one of you who judges is without excuse. For when you judge another, you condemn yourself, since you, the judge, do the same things.
THIS DOES NOT MEAN WE ARE NOT TO JUDGE BUT IT DOES MEAN THAT WE ARE TO JUDGE RIGHTLY MATTHEW 7:1-5
Matthew 7:1–5 CSB
1 “Do not judge, so that you won’t be judged. 2 For you will be judged by the same standard with which you judge others, and you will be measured by the same measure you use. 3 Why do you look at the splinter in your brother’s eye but don’t notice the beam of wood in your own eye? 4 Or how can you say to your brother, ‘Let me take the splinter out of your eye,’ and look, there’s a beam of wood in your own eye? 5 Hypocrite! First take the beam of wood out of your eye, and then you will see clearly to take the splinter out of your brother’s eye.
2. OUR JUDGEMENT CAN BE IMPARTIAL (this can be based on a myriad of things, ie culture) (but God’s judgement is based in truth) V. 2
Romans 2:2 CSB
2 Now we know that God’s judgment on those who do such things is based on the truth.
Ex. Jews and the Law (History of text. Jews kicked out of Rome for 5 years return to churches most ran by Gentiles)
The Jews could very well look at their customs as superior to the customs of the Gentiles (non-jews), but Paul (who is a Jew) puts that to rest with a series of questions.
Romans 2:21–23 CSB
21 you then, who teach another, don’t you teach yourself? You who preach, “You must not steal”—do you steal? 22 You who say, “You must not commit adultery”—do you commit adultery? You who detest idols, do you rob temples? 23 You who boast in the law, do you dishonor God by breaking the law?
Ex. Woman caught in adultery John 8:7
John 8:7 CSB
7 When they persisted in questioning him, he stood up and said to them, “The one without sin among you should be the first to throw a stone at her.”
GOD JUDGES EVERYONE THE SAME
according to the works of the individual (not some special criteria or position in life)
Romans 2:5–6 CSB
5 Because of your hardened and unrepentant heart you are storing up wrath for yourself in the day of wrath, when God’s righteous judgment is revealed. 6 He will repay each one according to his works:
Romans 2:11 CSB
11 For there is no favoritism with God.
I. THE LAW (given to the Jews from God by Moses)
so what if you didn’t receive the law?
two groups
Romans 2:12–13 CSB
12 For all who sin without the law will also perish without the law, and all who sin under the law will be judged by the law. 13 For the hearers of the law are not righteous before God, but the doers of the law will be justified.
no one is free from God’s judgement (Gentile are still judge because the law is written on man’s heart)
Romans 2:14–15 CSB
14 So, when Gentiles, who do not by nature have the law, do what the law demands, they are a law to themselves even though they do not have the law. 15 They show that the work of the law is written on their hearts. Their consciences confirm this. Their competing thoughts either accuse or even excuse them
Here’s the Gospel message: no one is free and the way of righteousness before God is by His grace through faith
III. CIRCUMCISION AS A SIGN (COVENANT)
Genesis 17:10–11 CSB
10 This is my covenant between me and you and your offspring after you, which you are to keep: Every one of your males must be circumcised. 11 You must circumcise the flesh of your foreskin to serve as a sign of the covenant between me and you.
Circumcision untimely doesn't matter under grace
Romans 2:25–26 CSB
25 Circumcision benefits you if you observe the law, but if you are a lawbreaker, your circumcision has become uncircumcision. 26 So if an uncircumcised man keeps the law’s requirements, will not his uncircumcision be counted as circumcision?
Our sign is the Holy spirit
Romans 2:28–29 CSB
28 For a person is not a Jew who is one outwardly, and true circumcision is not something visible in the flesh. 29 On the contrary, a person is a Jew who is one inwardly, and circumcision is of the heart—by the Spirit, not the letter. That person’s praise is not from people but from God.
Jerusalem Council
Acts 15:7–11 CSB
7 After there had been much debate, Peter stood up and said to them, “Brothers, you are aware that in the early days God made a choice among you, that by my mouth the Gentiles would hear the gospel message and believe. 8 And God, who knows the heart, bore witness to them by giving them the Holy Spirit, just as he also did to us. 9 He made no distinction between us and them, cleansing their hearts by faith. 10 Now then, why are you testing God by putting a yoke on the disciples’ necks that neither our ancestors nor we have been able to bear? 11 On the contrary, we believe that we are saved through the grace of the Lord Jesus in the same way they are.”
Downpayment
Ephesians 1:14 CSB
14 The Holy Spirit is the down payment of our inheritance, until the redemption of the possession, to the praise of his glory.
