Well you have guessed it we are back with the 10 commandments
As we work through these 10 commandments
It is not just history we are looking back on but they still serve a purpose for us today as well
Remember a purpose of the law was and is to point us to Jesus
For the believer and non believer alike it shows us that we are in need of a savior
If you will recall the law seems to be broken in 2
some that deal with your relationship with God and some that deal with your relationships with people
Matthew 22:36–40 NASB95
36 “Teacher, which is the great commandment in the Law?” 37 And He said to him, “ ‘You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your mind.’ 38 “This is the great and foremost commandment. 39 “The second is like it, ‘You shall love your neighbor as yourself.’ 40 “On these two commandments depend the whole Law and the Prophets.”
See Jesus has summed up the law in these 2 commandments
They cover the entire law
That first command sums up the first 4 commandments of the 10
It is essential that you and I understand those because without those there is no foundation for anything else
And if there is a foundation it is no the correct or right foundation and it will only be washed away when the storms of life come
So church it is so important that you and I have this foundation
The first command is that you and I are to have no gods before God Himself
Church there are no other gods, there is only one
John 14:6 NASB95
6 Jesus said to him, “I am the way, and the truth, and the life; no one comes to the Father but through Me.
Just so you understand this command to the fullness
There is no other god out there and church there is no other way to God but through Jesus
So yes God is an exclusive God which goes directly against what the world is telling you that you need to include everything
Which is why that 1st command is so important for you and I
We are to have no other gods before God Himself
The second command is that we are to not have or create idols
We are not to worship or serve them or even create them
And I would go so far as to say that if you have them, when you have prayed God search my heart and show me my idols
Then church you have a responsibility to set out to destroy them
Last week we talked about how we are to not use the Lords name in vain
Their is power in the name of the Lord and church we are to not use it worthlessly
The words you use and church even the way you live if you are a believer then you claiming the character of God
When we use the name of the Lord worthlessly and when our lives don’t match Gods character we are taking the Lords name in vain
We are not to do that
Because it is only through the name of Jesus that you and I are saved that the lost world out there is saved
Church this morning we come to the 4th commandment
This commandment will sup up the greatest command Jesus references from the shama which is found in
Deuteronomy 6:4–6 NASB95
4 “Hear, O Israel! The Lord is our God, the Lord is one! 5 “You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your might. 6 “These words, which I am commanding you today, shall be on your heart.
Church these first 4 commands are the foundation
Without this foundation the rest of it falls apart
Think of it is this way too
The way you Love the Lord your God with all your heart, soul, might
is to live out the first 4 commandments
The first 4 commandments deal with the relationship between you and God no one else
Today we look at the 4th commandment
Exodus 20:8–11 NASB95
8 “Remember the sabbath day, to keep it holy. 9 “Six days you shall labor and do all your work, 10 but the seventh day is a sabbath of the Lord your God; in it you shall not do any work, you or your son or your daughter, your male or your female servant or your cattle or your sojourner who stays with you. 11 “For in six days the Lord made the heavens and the earth, the sea and all that is in them, and rested on the seventh day; therefore the Lord blessed the sabbath day and made it holy.
We are to remember the sabbath day
The Sabbath Day is a day of rest set aside and modeled by God Himself
It is a complete day of rest from the secular work following six days of labor
And church we are to remember it
It was molded by God Himself
Remember that God work 6 days during creation and then He rested
When we read the story of creation it is a no wonder God rested
This is the beautiful thing about creation
It did not wear God out that He needed the rest but He did it as an example to us
Church we are to rest
We are to take time aside from the busyness of our lives and rest
I am a firm believer that if you don’t God will force you to rest
To rest is to allow your physical body to rest and recharge
To rest is to allow your spirit to rest, when you are doing ministry it is not only physically taxing but it can be spiritually taxing as well
God modeled what it is to take a sabbath for us, and He also modeled resting for us
After a big ministry event Jesus would often go off by Himself and rest, He would spend time praying and in fellowship with the Father
But notice it was always go off by Himself and rest, recharge, and fill up His cup
A sabbath is more than just physical rest church
It is an opportunity for you and I trust God through our rest and to reconnect with Him, to get our cups filled up
See church we don’t have to work 7 days because we can and should trust the Lord to supply for us
God knew we would have to work for things, but He wanted to make sure there was built in time for rest and special time for Him
We can trust God to supply for our needs
Exodus 16:4–5 NASB95
4 Then the Lord said to Moses, “Behold, I will rain bread from heaven for you; and the people shall go out and gather a day’s portion every day, that I may test them, whether or not they will walk in My instruction. 5 “On the sixth day, when they prepare what they bring in, it will be twice as much as they gather daily.”
God supplied bread from heaven, and especially on the 6th day so they could have a day with just God and not have to worry about food or gathering food
God supplied enough for them for 2 days on the 6th day
Church this is what it is to rest in the Lord to trust in the Lord to rest
Sundays are a great day to have a sabbath, a day of rest a day to join with family and fellowship and Worship the Lord together
A great day to fill your cup up
God gives the command because without a Sabbath set aside each week for the Lord you cannot expect to grow in relationship with God
Remember these commands deal with our relationship with God
And they build off of each other
Part of growing in relationship with God is to spend time dedicated to Him with Him
When we give up on that special time solely dedicated to God our relationship with God begins to decay and wouldn’t you know it then becomes easier and easier to walk away from God
Do you understand how important this day is for your Spiritual growth
You own personal Spiritual Growth
DL Moody had this to say
You show me a nation that has given up the sabbath and I will show you a nation that has got the seed of decay.
Dwight L. Moody
And Oh how true that is, not just for our country
But church for the church, for the family, and church for the individual as well
This is so very true
When you and I give up on our Special Day with the Lord
That was set aside for the Lord our own personal relationship with the Lord will begin to decay
And Parents let me tell you this, when church, when a sabbath stops being important to you, it will not be important to your children
Just like God modeled a sabbath
A time of Rest in the Lord
A Day of rest designed by God for you to Rest in the Lord
You should be modeling it for your children
Make the Sabbath day important
Make that Day of rest in the Lord important and Holy
Guard that day with Jesus so that you can begin to flourish in your relationship with God
After all that is why God commanded the sabbath
So that you and I could flourish in our personal relationship with God
Exodus 20:8–10 NASB95
8 “Remember the sabbath day, to keep it holy. 9 “Six days you shall labor and do all your work, 10 but the seventh day is a sabbath of the Lord your God; in it you shall not do any work, you or your son or your daughter, your male or your female servant or your cattle or your sojourner who stays with you.
Now we could take this and be completely legalistic about it that you and I are to do no work on it but that would go against the spirit of what God had designed
We could say that you are to do absolutely no work on the Lords day that the Lord Himself set aside from work
Remember how Jesus transformed and fulfilled the law from just the physical to adding the heart of the matter to that
So church maybe you have such a unique job that you have to work on Sundays
By the way Sundays are a day built into our week that can be a natural sabbath
So if that is you and you work on Sundays, I would challenge you to find another day that is your sabbath
When you can physically rest from work but also rest in the Lord
I think we do a good job a taking time to physically rest but I would really challenge you to rest in the Lord
Spend time worshiping the Lord
A time where you don’t work, and church trust the Lord and don’t worry about what is to come
But church I would also challenge you if at all possible allow Sunday to be your sabbath, and don’t work on that day
If you have the ability to say no I am not going to work on that day I have set it aside for Jesus
I can’t say this enough it is a command from God just like a command to go and share the Good News with the Lost world
We are to have that day where not only do we physically rest but we rest in the Lord and spend time worshipping Him and Fellowshipping with Him
Church I will leave you with this verse this morning
When we do spend time with God
Exodus 33:14 NASB95
14 And He said, “My presence shall go with you, and I will give you rest.”
When we take a sabbath and grow with God
God then goes with us and our batteries are charged for the coming week
And wouldn’t you know God will give us rest
Allow your physical body to rest
Allow your spirit to rest
Trust God
INVITATION
For some the last part may be difficult because you have never done that
I want to extend an invitation to you today that maybe you need to trust in The Lord as your savior for the first time
You can come to the front and speak with someone about how to Trust the Lord for the first time this morning
Or maybe you have come today and you simple need sometime to prayer
The altar is open
