Why do we need to know and use spiritual disciplines?
Disciple - one who accepts and assists in spreading the doctrines of another: such as Christianity : 1: one of the twelve in the inner circle of Christ's followers according to the Gospel accounts 2: a convinced adherent of a school or individual
Discipline - 1. control gained by enforcing obedience or order 2. orderly or prescribed conduct or pattern of behavior 3. SELF-CONTROL
The three points of this message:
Why We Study
Techniques for Studying the Bible
Put it into Practice
Why Study - Here’s five reasons -
1. Learn to Fear/Respect God - Deut 31:12
Deuteronomy 31:12–13 (NASB95)
12 “Assemble the people, the men and the women and children and the alien who is in your town, so that they may hear and learn and fear the Lord your God, and be careful to observe all the words of this law.
2. To be like Christ! Eph 5:1
Ephesians 5:1 NASB95
1 Therefore be imitators of God, as beloved children;
How many of you wanted to be like your father or mother?
3. In order to spread the doctrine of Christianity.
Remember the definition of a disciple: One who accepts and assists in spreading the doctrines of another.
How can you spread the doctrines of Christ Jesus if you don’t know what He taught?
4. Learn to conduct ourselves in a prescribed pattern of behavior (according to the scriptures)
Have you ever noticed that there are a lot of shoulds and shouldn’ts, do this, don’t do that? Another way to say it is put offs and put ons.
Galatians 5:19–23 NASB95
19 Now the deeds of the flesh are evident, which are: immorality, impurity, sensuality, 20 idolatry, sorcery, enmities, strife, jealousy, outbursts of anger, disputes, dissensions, factions, 21 envying, drunkenness, carousing, and things like these, of which I forewarn you, just as I have forewarned you, that those who practice such things will not inherit the kingdom of God. 22 But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, 23 gentleness, self-control; against such things there is no law.
5. Learn to do good works - Titus 3:14
Titus 3:14 NASB95
14 Our people must also learn to engage in good deeds to meet pressing needs, so that they will not be unfruitful.
Good deeds - that can be just about anything that helps someone else. Especially if it is a pressing need.
Fruitful - we should be spreading the doctrine of Christ Jesus. Good deeds help us build relationships and share the gospel with others. So go and do and share.
Techniques for Studying -
The first thing to do is pray: Ps 119:73 says:
Psalm 119:73 NASB95
73 Your hands made me and fashioned me; Give me understanding, that I may learn Your commandments.
Pray that you might receive understanding of what it says and means, and most of all, how it relates to you in our culture. Without understanding it’s just a book full of words.
After that get busy digging in.
So, here are a few possible ways of studying the bible.
My favorite - Inductive bible study (3 steps - observation, interpretation and application)
2. The Sword method - ask these three questions - What do I learn about God? What do I learn about people? What does God want me to do?
3. Character Study - Dig deep to find out life lessons from your favorite character.
4. Write out verses - What words are my eyes drawn to? What is the main subject? What if the main verb?
5. Study a book of the bible - The ladies are studying Daniel right now. Try it the same way, use a study or dig deep with practical tools which help you learn.
6. Read through the Bible - Beginning to end. There are a lot of different ways to do it besides cover to cover - pick one.
7. Topical/Thematic Bible Study - Pick a topic… Sanctification, Salvation, The names of God. There are a lot to choose from.
8. Practical study - Study with the idea of life application. With a topic you might not think to apply the information to your life but with a practical study you can take what you learn and salvation and apply to your life.
9. Memorize Scripture - this should be a part of what we always do...
10. Study Scripture Cross-References - show them in my Bible.
11. Meditate on the word - Think about it… roll it over in your mind. You can, read the word, write the word, memorize the word, speak the word, sing the word, pray the bible, picture the bible...
12. Word Study - pick a word and find out all you can, such as Salvation.
Tools: (Have the stack of books)
(show them a bunch) Bible study apps such as Blue Letter Bible, BibleGateway, Logos, Bible Dictionary, Concordance, Bible Atlas, Commentary,
Put it into Practice - 1 Cor 14:31
1 Corinthians 14:31 NASB95
31 For you can all prophesy one by one, so that all may learn and all may be exhorted;
So - how about some of you prophesy one by one. Any one want to let everybody else know what your favorite Bible study method is?
Another way to put your knowledge into practice is to teach someone else. Preach the gospel - or at least tell other people about Jesus. After all a disciple is one who assists is spreading the doctrine of Christianity. “Go, therefore and make more disciples...
Close - So, now we know...
