Who is watching?
Why are so many people gathered?
Pentecost is the New Testament name for the Feast of Weeks, when the wheat harvest was celebrated by a one-day festival during which special sacrifices were offered.
the festival was associated with the renewal of the covenant made with Noah and then with Moses.
This festival is taking place in Jerusalem
Transition: So the scene is set and Peter is stepping up to the plate to try to figure out how to explain what is happening, and as we explain it we have to recognize that the very spirit of God is helping him explain it…
The holy Spirit can only be explained by Jesus (2:13-42)
The holy Spirit can only be explained by Jesus (2:13-42)
This is the first Gospel presentation… the first true sermon.
So what is preached…
How can we keep this message on the tip of our tongues
1. Jesus is the Messiah
1. Jesus is the Messiah
Peter appeals to the OT understanding of the Messiah and explains who Jesus is.
Joel:
“And it shall come to pass afterward,
that I will pour out my Spirit on all flesh;
your sons and your daughters shall prophesy,
your old men shall dream dreams,
and your young men shall see visions.
Even on the male and female servants
in those days I will pour out my Spirit.
“And I will show wonders in the heavens and on the earth, blood and fire and columns of smoke. The sun shall be turned to darkness, and the moon to blood, before the great and awesome day of the Lord comes. And it shall come to pass that everyone who calls on the name of the Lord shall be saved. For in Mount Zion and in Jerusalem there shall be those who escape, as the Lord has said, and among the survivors shall be those whom the Lord calls.
David:
Being therefore a prophet, and knowing that God had sworn with an oath to him that he would set one of his descendants on his throne, he foresaw and spoke about the resurrection of the Christ, that he was not abandoned to Hades, nor did his flesh see corruption.
Transition: So here is who he is… now what happened....
2. You Crucified him
2. You Crucified him
this Jesus, delivered up according to the definite plan and foreknowledge of God, you crucified and killed by the hands of lawless men.
Let all the house of Israel therefore know for certain that God has made him both Lord and Christ, this Jesus whom you crucified.”
Transition: But Jesus cant be held down… so
3. Yet God raised him
3. Yet God raised him
God raised him up, loosing the pangs of death, because it was not possible for him to be held by it.
Transition: now back to the 120.
4. They are witnesses to this.
4. They are witnesses to this.
This Jesus God raised up, and of that we all are witnesses.
5. We are now given the opportunity to be witnesses to this.
5. We are now given the opportunity to be witnesses to this.
And Peter said to them, “Repent and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins, and you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.

D) and you will receive the HS
For the promise is for you and for your children and for all who are far off, everyone whom the Lord our God calls to himself.”
Closing:
And 3,000 are added to their number that day
and there you have it the Big C church has begun.
