MATTHEW 28:16-20 (NASB95)
The Great Commission
16 But the eleven disciples proceeded to Galilee, to the mountain which Jesus had designated.
17 When they saw Him, they worshiped Him; but some were doubtful.
18 And Jesus came up and spoke to them, saying, “All authority has been given to Me in heaven and on earth.
19 “Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit,
20 teaching them to observe all that I commanded you; and lo, I am with you always, even to the end of the age.”

V 16

16 But the eleven disciples proceeded to Galilee, to the mountain which Jesus had designated.
WE DO NOT KNOW EXACT LOCATION OF MOUNTAIN.
ALL WE KNOW IS THAT IT WAS AROUND THE SEA OF GALILEE
GALILEE IS 123 MILES NORTH FROM JERUSALEM
SEVERAL DAYS WALK
WE DO KNOW THAT IN MATTHEW JESUS WENT TO A MOUNTAIN AT LEAST 3 TIMES SO HE MAY HAVE HAD A FAVORITE PLACE.
SERMON ON MOUNT CH.5
WENT TO PRAY CH 14
WENT TO SIT CH 15

V 17

17 When they saw Him, they worshiped Him; but some were doubtful.
THERE WAS DIFFERENT REACTION FROM THE DISCIPLES
SOME WORSHIPPED
SOME DOUBTED
The verb used to describe the doubt was used in MATT 14:31
Immediately Jesus stretched out His hand and took hold of him, and said to him, “You of little faith, why did you doubt?”
to describe Peter’s little faith when sinking into the sea. This doubt, then, seems to indicate hesitancy rather than unbelief.

I. AUTHORITY

V18

18 And Jesus came up and spoke to them, saying, “All authority has been given to Me in heaven and on earth.
The word ALL is in all three of these last verses.
reflex Jesus’ power and mission
He is the second person of the Godhead
has always had the power but at the resurrection God vindicates and proves Jesus claims
to forgive sin and judge the world
Matthew 10:34-36 “34 “Do not think that I came to bring peace on the earth; I did not come to bring peace, but a sword. 35 “For I came to set a man against his father, and a daughter against her mother, and a daughter-in-law against her mother-in-law; 36 and a man’s enemies will be the members of his household.”
JESUS SPEAKS THROUGHOUT THE GOSPELS OF HIS AUTHORITY
EX. MATT 16:28 “28 “Truly I say to you, there are some of those who are standing here who will not taste death until they see the Son of Man coming in His kingdom.””
unbelief was probably associated with His claims
the way He allowed the people to treat him
the jews wanted a warrior king.

II. ACTION

V19

19 “Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit,
Go is the action word given by Jesus
In the Greek, the way it is used it is considered a command
Therefore indicates that their success is because of Jesus authority.
Make disciples means to make followers, student, even apprentice of Jesus
Make even has a force tense to it which implies Urge the to become
All nations is including the Gentiles and Israel.
Name is a singular noun (not “names”), giving an implicit witness to the tri-unity of God.

III. ATTITUDE

V20

20 teaching them to observe all that I commanded you; and lo, I am with you always, even to the end of the age.”
teaching and baptizing is primary way in which we are to make followers of Jesus.
He promises to be with us until he comes back.
There will be difficult times and Challenges
Eph. 6:12 “12 For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the powers, against the world forces of this darkness, against the spiritual forces of wickedness in the heavenly places.”
