Prophet
Prophet
Jesus fulfilled the role as a prophet. A prophet is one who shares the words of God. Moses wad the first major prophet and wrote the first 5 books of the Bible: Genesis, Exodus, Leviticus, Deuteronomy, and Numbers. This is know as the Pentateuch.
Moses predicted the coming of Jesu in Deut. 18:15- 18
“The Lord your God will raise up for you a prophet like me from among you, from your countrymen, you shall listen to him.
“This is according to all that you asked of the Lord your God in Horeb on the day of the assembly, saying, ‘Let me not hear again the voice of the Lord my God, let me not see this great fire anymore, or I will die.’
“The Lord said to me, ‘They have spoken well.
‘I will raise up a prophet from among their countrymen like you, and I will put My words in his mouth, and he shall speak to them all that I command him.
“For I did not speak on My own initiative, but the Father Himself who sent Me has given Me a commandment as to what to say and what to speak.
Though the new testament never refers to Jesus as a prophet (though many that didn’t know him claimed he was a prophet), Hebrews references Jesus as the greatest prophet. Heb. 1:1-2
God, after He spoke long ago to the fathers in the prophets in many portions and in many ways,
in these last days has spoken to us in His Son, whom He appointed heir of all things, through whom also He made the world.
Though Jesus spoke the words of God as a prophet he was much more than a prophet. First of all, He was the the One that thew other prophets were talking about. You recall Luke 24:27
Then beginning with Moses and with all the prophets, He explained to them the things concerning Himself in all the Scriptures.
Secondly, Jesus was not just a messenger of God, He is God. This is why the prophets had to say, “thus says the Lord”, and Jesus can say, “but I say unto you”. His words are just as authoritative as the Father!
Priest
Priest
Jesus also served and serves as our priest. A priest offered sacrifice for the people, brought people into the presence of God as a representative, and prayed for the people.
Jesus the sacrifice
Jesus the sacrifice
In the old testament the priest would take the sacrifice and offer it on the alter in the temple for the covering of their sins. Jesus became the sacrifice that removes sin. Heb. 9:26
Otherwise, He would have needed to suffer often since the foundation of the world; but now once at the consummation of the ages He has been manifested to put away sin by the sacrifice of Himself.
Jesus did away with the sacrificial system and became the eternal sacrifice for all times. John 1:29
The next day he saw Jesus coming to him and said, “Behold, the Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world!
Brings us into the presence of God
Brings us into the presence of God
The priest would do this by going into the room that only priest could go into, then their was the holy of holies. The high priest was the only one who could go in and meet with God once a year. He would go in as a representative for the nation of Israel and himself.
When Jesus was crucified the curtain that separated the holy of holies was torn in two from top to bottom. Matt. 27:51
And behold, the veil of the temple was torn in two from top to bottom; and the earth shook and the rocks were split.
This means that we do not have to go through a priest to access God. Jesus serves as our high priest. Heb 5:9-10
And having been made perfect, He became to all those who obey Him the source of eternal salvation,
being designated by God as a high priest according to the order of Melchizedek.
Jesus prays for us.
Jesus prays for us.
The priest would lift up prayers on behalf of the people of Israel. Jesus makes continual intercession for us. Heb. 7:25
Therefore He is able also to save forever those who draw near to God through Him, since He always lives to make intercession for them.
Jesus also mediates between us and God 1 Tim.2:5
For there is one God, and one mediator also between God and men, the man Christ Jesus,
Jesus is the one who constantly goes before the Father on our behalf.
King
King
A king in the old testament ruled over the nation of Israel. The greatest human king of Israel was King David. He was known to empower Israel to its strongest and largest point.
Jesus kingdom is much more broad than David’s. He is our King. John18:36
Jesus answered, “My kingdom is not of this world. If My kingdom were of this world, then My servants would be fighting so that I would not be handed over to the Jews; but as it is, My kingdom is not of this realm.”
Jesus is King of Heaven, earth and all things created. Eph. 1:20-22
which He brought about in Christ, when He raised Him from the dead and seated Him at His right hand in the heavenly places,
far above all rule and authority and power and dominion, and every name that is named, not only in this age but also in the one to come.
And He put all things in subjection under His feet, and gave Him as head over all things to the church,
And Jesus came up and spoke to them, saying, “All authority has been given to Me in heaven and on earth.
And I saw heaven opened, and behold, a white horse, and He who sat on it is called Faithful and True, and in righteousness He judges and wages war.
His eyes are a flame of fire, and on His head are many diadems; and He has a name written on Him which no one knows except Himself.
He is clothed with a robe dipped in blood, and His name is called The Word of God.
And the armies which are in heaven, clothed in fine linen, white and clean, were following Him on white horses.
From His mouth comes a sharp sword, so that with it He may strike down the nations, and He will rule them with a rod of iron; and He treads the wine press of the fierce wrath of God, the Almighty.
And on His robe and on His thigh He has a name written, “KING OF KINGS, AND LORD OF LORDS.”
so that at the name of Jesus every knee will bow, of those who are in heaven and on earth and under the earth,
