Introduction

Every step to the cross is led by Jesus. I can joyfully submit to Christ’s loving sovereignty.

18:1-14 - Jesus’ arrest

Reading question: Look for clues John leaves that speak of Jesus control of his situation.
Picture the situation in your mind. Imagine it’s a movie scene you’re watching. Let it play out in your mind. What elements of this scene lead you to believe that Jesus is a victim of an organized conspiracy?
Now, let’s review how John records the scene and notice how he tells it, as he looks back inspired by the Holy Spirit. How is Jesus in control?
Went to a well-known garden (not hiding)
Jesus knew all that would happen
He came forward to them (not running away)
Does not pretend to be someone else
They all fall down
Fulfilled his own prophecy regarding his disciples by commanding the troops
Refuses to fight
Reference to Caiaphas’ own words, underscoring God’s knowledge and control
What aspects of Jesus’ character do you see in this episode that fill you with strength to trust Him?
Jesus’ sovereignty defies my circumstances
Jesus’ power overcomes my helplessness
Jesus’ promises protect my hope

18:12-24 - Jesus before the high priest

Same practice: Play out the scenario in your head, and tell me what you see. Who has the power?
Now notice the details in John’s account. How is Jesus in control?
His prophecy of Peter’s betrayal
Straightforward answers; nothing to hide
Points to the words of his own testimony
Self-control when assaulted or insulted

Challenge

I can joyfully submit to Christ’s loving authority. John Calvin wrote, “Let us remember that the body of the Son of God was bound in order that our souls might be set free from the bonds of sin.” We were bound by our own sin, helpless to rescue ourselves. Jesus submitted himself to the penalty of arrest, the degradation of questioning — ultimately to the cross — to win our freedom.
Control is a key theme of this lesson. In our sin, we like to be in control. We even think we have everything under control. So did Judas, and the officers, and the priests. But in reality, Jesus was in control. His authority, as he submitted himself to death, shows that our greatest joy is ridding ourselves of the illusion of control and submitting to the reality of His authority. Testimonies?
