Introduction: Friends, I’ve been studying 1 John recently, which has reminded me of something that the Lord taught me a long time ago. I want to share with you from 1 John 3:3 “3 And everyone who has this hope fixed on Him purifies himself, just as He is pure.”
Upon reading this, we need to understand what this hope is.
John explains this hope in the previous verse (cf. 1 John 3:2).
This hope trusts that the Lord Jesus that you believe in to save you from your sins is coming again!
This hope involves trusting that Jesus will change us to be just like Him someday.
This hope involves trusting Jesus that, when He changes us to be like Him completely without sin and the desire to sin, we will live with Him forever.
But, hope is something that is future!
A hope is always something that is future: get my homework done, Pastor Bill will give me a box of pizza to take home.
What should we do in the present if we have this future hope?
Purify yourself!
We all understand what it means to purify something: to make it clean (free from dirt or stain)!
What kind of dirt or stain do you think that John is talking about here?
Stain/dirt of sin.
Our standard for purity from sin is Jesus Himself!
He always obeyed God.
He never, ever did anything wrong.
For us, we won’t be perfect, like Jesus, until He makes us perfect like Him when He comes again.
This is why we need, in the present, to participate in this daily, moment-by-moment, process of purifying ourselves, with Jesus as our example.
But, what does it look like to purify ourselves?
While there are several ways that John addresses this, I want to point out two.
Love God.
Because God loved us first by sending Jesus to die for sin, we love Him.
Love others.
Do Not hate others.
You can’t think nice thoughts.
You wish that only the worst kinds of things would happen to them.
Ex. Cain.
Show compassion towards others.
When you have the opportunity to be kind towards someone, you do so because you love the Lord.
You know what this looks like?
Playing with an item: 1) play with them or 2) let them play with it.
Not insisting that you keep it to play with it by yourself by being forceful with the item or the individual.
God’s Love shown in Jesus’ sacrifice enables us to love others like this and beyond!
Humility towards our personal sin (1 Jn 1:9).
You might be thinking, “this sounds too hard!”
By yourself, it is!
However, John speaks of having an anointing from the Holy One (cf. 1 John 2:20, 27).
Friends, what this means is that, if the Lord Jesus Who came to this earth as a man to die for sins is your Savior, then you have the Holy Spirit inside of you.
If the Holy Spirit is inside of you, He will teach you how to live so as to purify yourself from sin, according to God’s Word.
This means that we can rely on the Holy Spirit to help us to obey, even when we’re tempted to love the world or hate our brother.
Conclusion: Friends, if the Lord Jesus Who came to this earth to die for sin is your Savior, the hope that He is coming again to transform you and take you to live with Him forever transforms the way that you approach sin - purify yourself: believe the truth about Jesus, Love God, Love others, act humbly towards your sin.
