#1
John 19:16-30 “So he then handed Him over to them to be crucified. They took Jesus, therefore, and He went out, bearing His own cross, to the place called the Place of a Skull, which is called in Hebrew, Golgotha. There they crucified Him, and with Him two other men, one on either side, and Jesus in between. Pilate also wrote an inscription and put it on the cross. It was written, “JESUS THE NAZARENE, THE KING OF THE JEWS.” Therefore many of the Jews read this inscription, for the place where Jesus was crucified was near the city; and it was written in Hebrew, Latin and in Greek. So the chief priests of the Jews were saying to Pilate, “Do not write, ‘The King of the Jews’; but that He said, ‘I am King of the Jews.’ ” Pilate answered, “What I have written I have written.” Then the soldiers, when they had crucified Jesus, took His outer garments and made four parts, a part to every soldier and also the tunic; now the tunic was seamless, woven in one piece. Jn 19:24-30 “So they said to one another, “Let us not tear it, but cast lots for it, to decide whose it shall be”; this was to fulfill the Scripture: “They divided My outer garments among them, and for My clothing they cast lots.” Therefore the soldiers did these things. But standing by the cross of Jesus were His mother, and His mother’s sister, Mary the wife of Clopas, and Mary Magdalene. When Jesus then saw His mother, and the disciple whom He loved standing nearby, He said to His mother, “Woman, behold, your son!” Then He said to the disciple, “Behold, your mother!” From that hour the disciple took her into his own household. After this, Jesus, knowing that all things had already been accomplished, to fulfill the Scripture, said, “I am thirsty.” A jar full of sour wine was standing there; so they put a sponge full of the sour wine upon a branch of hyssop and brought it up to His mouth. Therefore when Jesus had received the sour wine, He said, “It is finished!” And He bowed His head and gave up His spirit…”

John 19:38-42 “After these things Joseph of Arimathea, being a disciple of Jesus, but a secret one for fear of the Jews, asked Pilate that he might take away the body of Jesus; and Pilate granted permission. So he came and took away His body. Nicodemus, who had first come to Him by night, also came, bringing a mixture of myrrh and aloes, about a hundred pounds weight. So they took the body of Jesus and bound it in linen wrappings with the spices, as is the burial custom of the Jews. Now in the place where He was crucified there was a garden, and in the garden a new tomb in which no one had yet been laid. Therefore because of the Jewish day of preparation, since the tomb was nearby, they laid Jesus there.”

Jn 20:1-9 “Now on the first day of the week Mary Magdalene came early to the tomb, while it was still dark, and saw the stone already taken away from the tomb. So she ran and came to Simon Peter and to the other disciple whom Jesus loved, and said to them, “They have taken away the Lord out of the tomb, and we do not know where they have laid Him.” So Peter and the other disciple went forth, and they were going to the tomb. The two were running together; and the other disciple ran ahead faster than Peter and came to the tomb first; and stooping and looking in, he saw the linen wrappings lying there; but he did not go in. And so Simon Peter also came, following him, and entered the tomb; and he saw the linen wrappings lying there, and the face-cloth which had been on His head, not lying with the linen wrappings, but rolled up in a place by itself. So the other disciple who had first come to the tomb then also entered, and he saw and believed. For as yet they did not understand the Scripture, that He must rise again from the dead…”

Introduction

The resurrection is the single most important event that has taken place regarding the Christian faith.
It is the thing that ensures we get a second chance at life and fellowship with God.
It is the thing that has handed Satan a damaging, deadly and defining blow in his war against God.
When God said, “He will crush your head” - it was through the resurrection God accomplished that. Gen 3:15 “And I will put enmity Between you and the woman, And between your seed and her seed; He shall bruise you on the head, And you shall bruise him on the heel.””

When Jesus died the devil thought that was it, that it was over but,…It Wasn’t Over

But it was “impossible for Him to be holden by death” Acts 2:24 - HE GOT UP, IT WASN’T OVER!!!
The Devil thought He won
He thought Jesus was finsihed for good
He Thought he beat him
But there was one problem. . .early Sunday Morning Jesus got up, IT WASN’T OVER

Jesus is Alive!

You don’t serve a God
Who is dead but alive
Made by hands but made all hands
Fashioned with things of this world but who fashioned this world
A God who’s in the grave but one who is in glory
WE SERVE A GOD WHO’S ALIVE!!!
This must cause you to have a pep in your step
A Song on your lips
Joy in your heart
Knowing that Jesus is still alive!

John said. . . “it is finished”

What was finished? Jn 19:30
The sacrificial work of Jesus was finished
Jn 1:29 “The next day he saw Jesus coming to him and said, “Behold, the Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world!”
He could’ve called Jesus anything else but He chose this!
Jesus came to offer Himself once for all Heb 10:9-10 “then He said, “Behold, I have come to do Your will.” He takes away the first in order to establish the second. By this will we have been sanctified through the offering of the body of Jesus Christ once for all.”
APPL. We need to be careful trusting in our own righteousness - the only reason we can talk about sanctification is JESUS

Jesus had a “will to do”

Jn 4:34 “Jesus said to them, “My food is to do the will of Him who sent Me and to accomplish His work.”
APPL. IS there anybody that say what sustains me is doing God’s will
Jn 6:38 ““For I have come down from heaven, not to do My own will, but the will of Him who sent Me.”
APPL. Every now and again I need to remind myself that it’s not about me, it’s about His will
Jn 8:29 ““And He who sent Me is with Me; He has not left Me alone, for I always do the things that are pleasing to Him.””

Jesus came with a purpose

APPL. You mean something to Jesus -
#1 That’s why it doesn’t matter what people think about Jesus decided to die for you long before they formed an opinion about you.
#2 This means your life is valuable to Jesus

Jesus had “an hour”

When He came, there was a set time when He would fulfill His purpose
Jn 2:4 “And Jesus said to her, “Woman, what does that have to do with us? My hour has not yet come.””
Jn 7:30 “So they were seeking to seize Him; and no man laid his hand on Him, because His hour had not yet come.”
Jn 8:20 “These words He spoke in the treasury, as He taught in the temple; and no one seized Him, because His hour had not yet come.
BUT
Jn 12:23 “And Jesus answered them, saying, “The hour has come for the Son of Man to be glorified.

Jesus faced death

Jn 15:13 ““Greater love has no one than this, that one lay down his life for his friends.”
This was no ordinary death!!!
Romans were skilled in making someone dead
Many people died before they even made it up on the cross
The cross was meant to humiliate THEM
BUT JESUS GOT UP
IT WASN'T OVER
Jn 2:19-22 “Jesus answered them, “Destroy this temple, and in three days I will raise it up.” The Jews then said, “It took forty-six years to build this temple, and will You raise it up in three days?” But He was speaking of the temple of His body. So when He was raised from the dead, His disciples remembered that He said this; and they believed the Scripture and the word which Jesus had spoken.”

BLESSINGS OF THE RESURRECTION

Jn 16:7 ““But I tell you the truth, it is to your advantage that I go away; for if I do not go away, the Helper will not come to you; but if I go, I will send Him to you.” [strength comes with this]
1 Pet 1:3 “Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who according to His great mercy has caused us to be born again to a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead,”
Acts 17:30-31 ““Therefore having overlooked the times of ignorance, God is now declaring to men that all people everywhere should repent, because He has fixed a day in which He will judge the world in righteousness through a Man whom He has appointed, having furnished proof to all men by raising Him from the dead.””
