Intro

Who is our authority?
Who is your authority?
How do you feel about authority/ies?
We live as people under authority.
Why????
What would the world look like if we dont have authority
We Were created to live under authority but what authority
Our Friends
Social
Cultural
Biblically
The Bible is that authority
God’s instructions and commands for humans written down and given to us so that we would understand how to live
This book is an instruction manual for us to live this human life we have been given
In the 90’s people turned the word bible into an acrostic
Basic
Instructions
Before
Leaving
Earth
As cheesy as it is it’s true
but more importantly the Bible is the only instructions we need
Its the ultimate place of truth
Let me tell you the truth of the bible isnt dependent on wether or not you believe it
The truth and authority of scripture doesnt depend on wether or not you think its so
The truth and authority of the scripture is a fact
How do I know that
Because the bible tells me so
This is the point where people say ok thats just circular reasoning and check out
but it doesnt change the fact that the bible is the ultimate authority
I can give you facts about what makes the bible special
Written over 1500 years
by 40 authors
on three continents
All telling the same story
Well now do you believe int he authority of scripture
that probably didnt move the needle
We dont need outside reasons to prove the Bible is the ultimate authority
We just need the Bible
So how do we know that the bible is the ulitimate authority

Because its the actual word of God

Read Deuteronomy 32:46-47
Deuteronomy 32:46–47 ESV
46 he said to them, “Take to heart all the words by which I am warning you today, that you may command them to your children, that they may be careful to do all the words of this law. 47 For it is no empty word for you, but your very life, and by this word you shall live long in the land that you are going over the Jordan to possess.”
This in the final chapter of Moses last message he would deliver to God’s people
Before they enter the promise land Moses tells them this
Moses tells them “take to heart the words I am warning you today...”
Why because they are not empty words
but the words are your very life
They should dominate all things so that you may live long in the land
The land the Lord gives you
As they are his people and he is their God
This is the very word they need to submit themselves to their ulitmate authority
These words are the words they need to submit themselves to
Why because they are the very words of God
Read 2 Timothy 3:15-17
2 Timothy 3:16–17 ESV
16 All Scripture is breathed out by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness, 17 that the man of God may be complete, equipped for every good work.
There is a scripture that is breathed out by God
There are words that are the very words of God
The Bible is our authority because it is the word from the one from whom all authority emanates from
In fact these words are so important and authoritative that even Jesus lived his life according to them

Even Jesus acknowledges its authority

Read Matthew 5:17-19
Matthew 5:17–19 ESV
17 “Do not think that I have come to abolish the Law or the Prophets; I have not come to abolish them but to fulfill them. 18 For truly, I say to you, until heaven and earth pass away, not an iota, not a dot, will pass from the Law until all is accomplished. 19 Therefore whoever relaxes one of the least of these commandments and teaches others to do the same will be called least in the kingdom of heaven, but whoever does them and teaches them will be called great in the kingdom of heaven.
Jesus makes it clear to them
I didnt come to get rid of this word
But in fact this word will continue even after Jesus leaves this earth
This is God here on earth who has subjected himself to this law
we must not make less of the word
relax the commandment

How then do we live

Joshua 23:6 ESV
Therefore, be very strong to keep and to do all that is written in the Book of the Law of Moses, turning aside from it neither to the right hand nor to the left,
Authoritative words are words that impose obligations on the lives of their readers and hearers. To say that the Bible is authoritative is to say that it governs all areas of human life.
the Christian must be bold to obey the Bible, not only in church, but in the workplace, in intellectual life, in science, philosophy, law, politics, the arts, culture, commerce, and entertainment
In submission to the word
trusting the word
not an old book
Hebrews 4:12–13 ESV
For the word of God is living and active, sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing to the division of soul and of spirit, of joints and of marrow, and discerning the thoughts and intentions of the heart. And no creature is hidden from his sight, but all are naked and exposed to the eyes of him to whom we must give account.
Deuteronomy 32:47 ESV
For it is no empty word for you, but your very life, and by this word you shall live long in the land that you are going over the Jordan to possess.”
Ephesians 4:11–15 ESV
11 And he gave the apostles, the prophets, the evangelists, the shepherds and teachers, 12 to equip the saints for the work of ministry, for building up the body of Christ, 13 until we all attain to the unity of the faith and of the knowledge of the Son of God, to mature manhood, to the measure of the stature of the fullness of Christ, 14 so that we may no longer be children, tossed to and fro by the waves and carried about by every wind of doctrine, by human cunning, by craftiness in deceitful schemes. 15 Rather, speaking the truth in love, we are to grow up in every way into him who is the head, into Christ,

Scripture is itself the very standard, the ultimate criterion of what is true and right

Psalm 19:7–11 ESV
7 The law of the Lord is perfect, reviving the soul; the testimony of the Lord is sure, making wise the simple; 8 the precepts of the Lord are right, rejoicing the heart; the commandment of the Lord is pure, enlightening the eyes; 9 the fear of the Lord is clean, enduring forever; the rules of the Lord are true, and righteous altogether. 10 More to be desired are they than gold, even much fine gold; sweeter also than honey and drippings of the honeycomb. 11 Moreover, by them is your servant warned; in keeping them there is great reward.
2 Timothy 3:15–17 ESV
15 and how from childhood you have been acquainted with the sacred writings, which are able to make you wise for salvation through faith in Christ Jesus. 16 All Scripture is breathed out by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness, 17 that the man of God may be complete, equipped for every good work.

2 Peter 3:15–16 ESV
15 And count the patience of our Lord as salvation, just as our beloved brother Paul also wrote to you according to the wisdom given him, 16 as he does in all his letters when he speaks in them of these matters. There are some things in them that are hard to understand, which the ignorant and unstable twist to their own destruction, as they do the other Scriptures.
Romans 1:18–31 ESV
18 For the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men, who by their unrighteousness suppress the truth. 19 For what can be known about God is plain to them, because God has shown it to them. 20 For his invisible attributes, namely, his eternal power and divine nature, have been clearly perceived, ever since the creation of the world, in the things that have been made. So they are without excuse. 21 For although they knew God, they did not honor him as God or give thanks to him, but they became futile in their thinking, and their foolish hearts were darkened. 22 Claiming to be wise, they became fools, 23 and exchanged the glory of the immortal God for images resembling mortal man and birds and animals and creeping things. 24 Therefore God gave them up in the lusts of their hearts to impurity, to the dishonoring of their bodies among themselves, 25 because they exchanged the truth about God for a lie and worshiped and served the creature rather than the Creator, who is blessed forever! Amen. 26 For this reason God gave them up to dishonorable passions. For their women exchanged natural relations for those that are contrary to nature; 27 and the men likewise gave up natural relations with women and were consumed with passion for one another, men committing shameless acts with men and receiving in themselves the due penalty for their error. 28 And since they did not see fit to acknowledge God, God gave them up to a debased mind to do what ought not to be done. 29 They were filled with all manner of unrighteousness, evil, covetousness, malice. They are full of envy, murder, strife, deceit, maliciousness. They are gossips, 30 slanderers, haters of God, insolent, haughty, boastful, inventors of evil, disobedient to parents, 31 foolish, faithless, heartless, ruthless.
