The Doors Were Shut For Fear Of The Jews (vs. 19)

Didn’t Peter and John walk away from the empty tomb in wonder and in belief?
Luke 24:12 NASB95
But Peter got up and ran to the tomb; stooping and looking in, he saw the linen wrappings only; and he went away to his home, marveling at what had happened.
John 20:8 NASB95
So the other disciple who had first come to the tomb then also entered, and he saw and believed.
Fear Is Real
The Gospels list some 125 Christ-issued imperatives. Of these, 21 urge us to “not be afraid” or “have courage” or ”take heart” or “be of good cheer.” The second most common command, to love God and neighbor, appears on only 8 occasions. If quantity is any indicator, Jesus takes our fears seriously. The one statement he made more than any other was this: “Don’t Be Afraid.” – pg. 10 – FEARLESS – Max Lucado
Psalm 55:4–5 NASB95
My heart is in anguish within me, And the terrors of death have fallen upon me. Fear and trembling come upon me, And horror has overwhelmed me.
Fear Can Keep Us From Danger
Fear of heights - no risking crazy ledges.
Fear of drowning - life jackets.
Fear Can Be Crippling:
Fear of heights and drowning…
So cliff jumping is pretty much out.
I can’t enjoy some scenic views.
I miss out on some water activities.
What Do We Fear? The 5 Big “P’s”
Power - We fear what is out of our control, or not being in control. Control.
Protection - We fear getting hurt. Fight or Flight.
Provision - We fear the losing something or the inability to get what we think is a necessity.
Peace - We fear the loss of relationship.
Punishment - We fear getting in trouble.
Why Do We Fear?
Genesis 3:9–10 NASB95
Then the Lord God called to the man, and said to him, “Where are you?” He said, “I heard the sound of You in the garden, and I was afraid because I was naked; so I hid myself.”
Power - Adam and Eve were in control and they lost it.
Protection - They were naked and yet were protected in the Garden of Eden and they lost it.
Provision - They had security of the necessities and they lost it.
Peace - They had walked with God and had peace with God and they lost it.
Punishment - They had freedom from negative consequences and they lost it.
What Doors Have You Shut Due To Fear?
Life Is Stormy.
Matthew 8:23–24 (NASB95)
When (Jesus) got into the boat, His disciples followed Him. And behold, there arose a great storm on the sea, so that the boat was being covered with the waves...
Just like the storms on the Sea of Galilee, those life storms can come on suddenly.
Great - mega
Storm - Seismos
a quake, a trembling eruption of sea and sky.
There was a seismos in Matt 27: 51-54 at Jesus death at Calvary, But there was a mega seismos in Matthew 28:2 when Jesus arose from the dead.
In the end, fear puts us in bondage to the 5 Big P’s.
The disciples lost control, power.
Their protection was gone.
Their provision was sleeping.
Their peace evaporated into anxiety. “Teacher, do You not care that we are perishing?”
Sometimes we think bad things happen because we’re being punished.
“Fear will always knock on your door. Just don’t invite it in for dinner and, for heaven’s sake, don’t offer it a bed for the night.” Max Lucado
We need to turn the mega seismos of the sea into the mega seismos of the resurrection!

It Was Evening Of That Day (vs 19)

It’s Evening
We’re going into darkness.
Darkness leads to fear.
In the night, imagining some fear,
How easy is a bush supposed a bear!
William Shakespeare
It’s Evening - Where is Jesus?
Sometimes we think Jesus is sleeping.
Matthew 8:24 NASB95
And behold, there arose a great storm on the sea, so that the boat was being covered with the waves; but Jesus Himself was asleep.
Sometimes Jesus takes us to the end of our rope before He rescues us.

The First Day Of The Week (vs 19)

Don’t Forget. It IS Sunday. It is not Friday.
We are living in The First Day Of The Week!!!!
He Is Risen!
He Is Alive!

Jesus Came And Stood In Their Midst (vs. 19)

People think Money can set us free from our fears? The 5 “P’s”
Hebrews 13:5–8 (NASB95)
Make sure that your character is free from the love of money, being content with what you have; for He Himself has said, “I will never desert you, nor will I ever forsake you,” so that we confidently say, “The Lord is my helper, I will not be afraid. What will man do to me?”...Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and forever.
Money is Power.
Money is Protection
Money is Provision
Money gives peace of mind
Money can protect from punishment - bribes
1 Timothy 6:17 NASB95
Instruct those who are rich in this present world not to be conceited or to fix their hope on the uncertainty of riches, but on God, who richly supplies us with all things to enjoy.
Into Their Fear Jesus Came, Twice
Matthew 8:26 NASB95
He said to them, “Why are you afraid, you men of little faith?” Then He got up and rebuked the winds and the sea, and it became perfectly calm.
“Peace To You.” Repeated 3x (twice the first time, once the second) (vs. 19, 21, 26)
Mark 4:39 NASB95
And He got up and rebuked the wind and said to the sea, “Hush, be still.” And the wind died down and it became perfectly calm.

Jesus’ last teaching to His disciples:
John 14:26–27 NASB95
“But the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in My name, He will teach you all things, and bring to your remembrance all that I said to you. “Peace I leave with you; My peace I give to you; not as the world gives do I give to you. Do not let your heart be troubled, nor let it be fearful.
John 16:33 NASB95
“These things I have spoken to you, so that in Me you may have peace. In the world you have tribulation, but take courage; I have overcome the world.”
“Peace be with you” would be equivalent to saying “shalom” in the OT.
Do You Recognize Jesus Is In Your Midst? Jesus Is Risen!

Jesus Showed Them His Wounds (vs. 20)

He understands. He didn’t chastise them.
He provided proof that it was Him.
By His wounds we are healed.
Isaiah 53:5 NIV84
But he was pierced for our transgressions, he was crushed for our iniquities; the punishment that brought us peace was upon him, and by his wounds we are healed.
He was pierced - He gave up His protection for us.
He was crushed - He gave up His power for us.
He was punished - He took our punishment for us.
He was wounded - His wounds are our provision. We are healed.
And instead of punishment - He brought us peace.
1 John 4:18 NASB95
There is no fear in love; but perfect love casts out fear, because fear involves punishment, and the one who fears is not perfected in love.
Fear started with Adam and Eve, but even then God provided.
God said, “In the day you eat of it, you shall die.”
Instead of Adam and Eve dying that day, an innocent animal died in their place.
They were clothed with the skin of that animal.
God provided an immediate substitute for their punishment, protected them in their nakedness, and then promised an all powerful Savior who would bring full forgiveness and peace.
He died and rose again for us so we do not have to fear!
An appropriate Response?

As I Have Been Sent, Now I Send You (vs. 21)

Matthew 28:19–20 NASB95
“Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I commanded you; and lo, I am with you always, even to the end of the age.”

Receive The Holy Spirit (vs. 22)

Breathed on. The Greek term actually can mean to breathe in, an in my opinion, should be translated that way.
Genesis 2:7 NASB95
Then the Lord God formed man of dust from the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living being.
Adam was the first human created. He was a new creation.
Now we become a new creation, born again and redeemed from the sin of Adam.
2 Corinthians 5:17 NASB95
Therefore if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creature; the old things passed away; behold, new things have come.
1 Peter 1:3 NASB95
Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who according to His great mercy has caused us to be born again to a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead,
You need Jesus to breathe the Holy Spirit into you, then you are saved and will be sealed for eternity.
Ephesians 1:13–14 NASB95
In Him, you also, after listening to the message of truth, the gospel of your salvation—having also believed, you were sealed in Him with the Holy Spirit of promise, who is given as a pledge of our inheritance, with a view to the redemption of God’s own possession, to the praise of His glory.
Baptized in - Pentecost. The power to be witnesses.
Acts 1:8 NASB95
but you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you; and you shall be My witnesses both in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and even to the remotest part of the earth.”
Power - be filled with
Protection - walk in
Provision - gifts of
Peace - fruit of
Punishment - he’s our paraclete - counselor, comforter, helper, advocate, intercessor.

Our Response To Fear:

Fear Makes Us Forget. Forget who we are supposed to fear.
The remarkable thing about fearing God is that when you fear God, you fear nothing else, whereas if you do not fear God, you fear everything else.
Oswald Chambers
An inappropriate response to fear comes from the devil, but God the Father gives us faith. Faith And Knowledge Of Who He Is
Half our fears are the result of ignorance.
Charles Spurgeon
Fear of the Unknown – God knows all
Fear of Insignificance – God created us in His image
Fear of Failure – God is forgiving
Fear of Judgment – God is loving and compassionate
Fear of the Future – God is eternal
Fear of Security – God is all powerful
Fear of Being Alone – God is everywhere present
An inappropriate response to fear can imprison us, but Jesus Christ Sets us free.
Luke 4:18–19 NASB95
The Spirit of the Lord is upon Me, Because He anointed Me to preach the gospel to the poor. He has sent Me to proclaim release to the captives, And recovery of sight to the blind, To set free those who are oppressed, To proclaim the favorable year of the Lord.”
An inappropriate response to fear is sinful, but God gives us something more powerful, the Holy Spirit
2 Timothy 1:7 ESV
for God gave us a spirit not of fear but of power and love and self-control.
