Priority #5 Because Christ is the Glory of God (John 1:14)...
In the physical Body of Christ:
John 1:14 KJV 1900
And the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us, (and we beheld his glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father,) full of grace and truth.
Christ is the Glory of God!
Hebrews 2:7 KJV 1900
Thou madest him a little lower than the angels; thou crownedst him with glory and honour, and didst set him over the works of thy hands:
Just in case we missed vs. 7, two verses later the Bible says...
Hebrews 2:9 KJV 1900
But we see Jesus, who was made a little lower than the angels for the suffering of death, crowned with glory and honour; that he by the grace of God should taste death for every man.
We could go on and on about Christ physical body we could see the glory of God...
We could also go on and on about How God in the spiritual body of Christ, there is no difference.
Because Christ is the Glory of God (John 1:14)...
In the Spiritual Body of Christ: (God’s intention is that that body, the church manifest the glory of God.)
1 Thessalonians 2:12 KJV 1900
That ye would walk worthy of God, who hath called you unto his kingdom and glory.
Paul, that when the father called us by the gospel of Christ, it was so that we could obtain the glory of our Lord Jesus Christ… Right now...
2 Thessalonians 2:14 KJV 1900
Whereunto he called you by our gospel, to the obtaining of the glory of our Lord Jesus Christ.
1 Peter 5:10 KJV 1900
But the God of all grace, who hath called us unto his eternal glory by Christ Jesus, after that ye have suffered a while, make you perfect, stablish, strengthen, settle you.
We could look at more verses but I think we get it...
Priority #5:
Because Christ is the Glory of God (John 1:14)
We must embrace an uncompromising priority on SPIRITED WORSHIP.
Spirited worship is the vehicle through which we manifest the glory of God in the world.
Ephesians 3:21 KJV 1900
Unto him be glory in the church by Christ Jesus throughout all ages, world without end. Amen.
So we must embrace uncompromising priority on Spirited Worship. I am not talking about what we may today say spirited worship is… It isn’t music… In fact I am not talking about music at all…
But I am talking about what Jesus said in,
John 4:23 KJV 1900
But the hour cometh, and now is, when the true worshippers shall worship the Father in spirit and in truth: for the Father seeketh such to worship him.
What does that actually look like? So lets take a few moments to look at the marks of,
The marks of a local body that embodies the glory of God.
Every person is connected in our perspective of worship.
We are all connected in our understanding of what worship actually is…
A. The Old Testament Hebrew word for worship: “Shachah”
The word is translated in the Old Testament worship (99), bow (31), bow down (18), reverence (5), fall down (3).
As we look at how God translated that word in our Bible we come away with this definition.
Worship is an attitude of our heart that produces an outward demonstration of reverence.
Worship is our saying to God: “Lord, I hold you in AWE.
B. The New Testament Greek word for worship: “Proskuneo”
The word is found 60 times in our King James Bible and every time it is translated the same way: Worship.
By it’s usage, we come away with the idea that…
Worship is an expression of both the reverence and affection in our hearts toward the Lord.
Worship is our saying to God: “Lord, I love you”
C. The old-English word for worship: “Worth-ship”
The word means “to ascribe worth to someone or something.
Declaring with out words and/or demonstrating by our actions that for which we count the Lord worthy.
(Worship is our saying to God: “Lord, You are worthy of my ALL”
D. Our Lord provides an incredible perspective on worship in John 4:23 “But the hour cometh, and now is, when the true worshippers shall worship the Father in spirit and in truth: for the Father seeketh such to worship him.”
If we want to get a very humbling and biblical perspective concerning worship, just consider the fact that the all powerful, all knowing, all sufficient, all everything God, who needs nothing, and needs no one, actually seeks something from the likes of me and you… He’s seeking our worship… Wow!
E. Our Lord also provides an incredible perspective on worship in Luke 10:38-42.
Luke 10:38–42 KJV 1900
Now it came to pass, as they went, that he entered into a certain village: and a certain woman named Martha received him into her house. And she had a sister called Mary, which also sat at Jesus’ feet, and heard his word. But Martha was cumbered about much serving, and came to him, and said, Lord, dost thou not care that my sister hath left me to serve alone? bid her therefore that she help me. And Jesus answered and said unto her, Martha, Martha, thou art careful and troubled about many things: But one thing is needful: and Mary hath chosen that good part, which shall not be taken away from her.
She positioned herself as a worshiper… Vs. 42 (5) powerful things we learn about worship...
Worship is a choice… (Mary hath chosen that good part) Not a matter of gifting, personality, looks, shape, it is a matter of priority. We are all going to wake up tomorrow morning and we have a choice.
Worship is more important that service. (What He is saying is that what Martha chose was in contrast to what Mary was doing.) Our service stems out of our worship.
Worship is eternal. (Which shall not be taken away from her.) Which kinda leads us to believe that our worship now, will be the worship that we offer for all of eternity. What we communicate with God and what we communicate to God with our life. (What the Bible calls our conversation) What we are doing here is developing the capacity that we are going to carry with us through all of eternity. “which shall not be taken...”
Worship is the main thing and the main spring. (But one thing is needful) The main thing, is to keep the main thing the main thing. May we never forget that the main thing is worship. It is also the main spring… A lot of time in Christianity we spend a lot of time polishing the face of the watch, oil the gears and changing the band when the watch doesn’t work because the main spring is broken. Jesus is trying to get us to see that worship is the main spring to the Christian life and when it is broken down, everything is broken down.
Worship is necessary. (We all have a bazillion things to do each day) If we could all listen to Christ this morning, about this thing of worship. It is needful...
In a local body that embodies the Glory of God...
2. Every person is convinced of the priority of worship.
Luke 10:42 KJV 1900
But one thing is needful: and Mary hath chosen that good part, which shall not be taken away from her.
A. To Jesus worship was the one thing.
B. To Paul, worship was the “one thing”
Philippians 3:3 KJV 1900
For we are the circumcision, which worship God in the spirit, and rejoice in Christ Jesus, and have no confidence in the flesh.
He is talking about the fact that “we” are those that worship God in spirit...
Philippians 3:13–14 KJV 1900
Brethren, I count not myself to have apprehended: but this one thing I do, forgetting those things which are behind, and reaching forth unto those things which are before, I press toward the mark for the prize of the high calling of God in Christ Jesus.
I would submit to you that this is what he talked about in verse 3. That one thing....
C. David, worship was “one thing”
Psalm 27:4 KJV 1900
One thing have I desired of the Lord, that will I seek after; That I may dwell in the house of the Lord all the days of my life, To behold the beauty of the Lord, and to inquire in his temple.
David’s “one thing” is also worship, what is intresting is that David’s “one thing” is expressed three things.
Dwelling int he house of the Lord.” (The place of worship)
Beholding the beauty of the Lord.” (Our perspective of worship.) Seeing Him for who He is in majesty and glory.
“Inquiring in His temple.” (The pursuit of worship.)
David is trying to express to us that worship is David’s passion… I would submit to you that this is why David is the only man mentioned in Scripture as the man after God’s own heart.
I want us to note the epitaph in,
1 Kings 15:5 KJV 1900
Because David did that which was right in the eyes of the Lord, and turned not aside from any thing that he commanded him all the days of his life, save only in the matter of Uriah the Hittite.
I need you to hear this… Imagine what it could have been and what it would have been if there was a period right there… But instead of a period, there is a comma… The verse goes on, “save only in the matter of Uriah the Hittite.”
You remember the matter where he took the mans wife, and then he took the mans life. Adultery and murder, which were supposed to result in the death of the one who committed either of these things.
What is intresting is that when the Bible gives us David’s “downfall” it is to expressed three ways.
2 Samuel 11:1–3 KJV 1900
And it came to pass, after the year was expired, at the time when kings go forth to battle, that David sent Joab, and his servants with him, and all Israel; and they destroyed the children of Ammon, and besieged Rabbah. But David tarried still at Jerusalem. And it came to pass in an eveningtide, that David arose from off his bed, and walked upon the roof of the king’s house: and from the roof he saw a woman washing herself; and the woman was very beautiful to look upon. And David sent and inquired after the woman. And one said, Is not this Bath-sheba, the daughter of Eliam, the wife of Uriah the Hittite?
Rather, then dwelling in the Lord’s house, he is dwelling in his own house.
2 Samuel 11:2 KJV 1900
And it came to pass in an eveningtide, that David arose from off his bed, and walked upon the roof of the king’s house: and from the roof he saw a woman washing herself; and the woman was very beautiful to look upon.
2. Instead of looking upon the beauty of the Lord, he saw the beauty of this women.
2 Samuel 11:3 KJV 1900
And David sent and inquired after the woman. And one said, Is not this Bath-sheba, the daughter of Eliam, the wife of Uriah the Hittite?
3. And instead of inquiring in the Lords temple, he is inquiring about the women’s temple. (Her body)
There is a key lesson to learn from the man after God’s own heart.
When worship ceases to be our “one thing”, and it simply becomes…
“A” thing...
“some” thing...
“no” thing...
We put ourselves in an incredibly vulnerable position to make sinful choices that will affect us for the rest of our lives!
And if you could ask David about that, he would probably want to put an explanation at the end of that.
Because Christ is the glory of God.
As those that now comprise His body,
We must embrace an uncompromising passion, and pursuit, and priority on SPIRITED WORSHIP.
