Why do we suffer?
He drove out the man, and at the east of the garden of Eden he placed the cherubim and a flaming sword that turned every way to guard the way to the tree of life.

God loves us and is good to us even in our suffering.
God loves us and is good to us even in our suffering.
God is not overpowered or unaware.
God is not overpowered or unaware.
“I know that you can do all things, and that no purpose of yours can be thwarted.
In the story of Job, Satan is allowed only to do to Job what God gives him permission to do and no more.
God’s response to Job is a great section of Scripture to read to understand God’s power. And not just over the big things. His power is over the little things as well, and they do not escape his attention.
Are not two sparrows sold for a penny? And not one of them will fall to the ground apart from your Father.
So we do not suffer because we have been overpowered by God or because He has forgotten about us.
God loves us.
God loves us.
Look at Lazarus’ story.
I’m the kind of parent who walks away. Sometimes the kids melt down or freak out over things or get upset over things that they don’t need to. On multiple occasions I have left a kid crying in the floor and said something to the effect of, “It’s going to be fine, there’s no need for you to be upset!” They can listen or wait to find out for themselves, but I’m gonna go on. That’s not what Jesus does with his friends. He knows what He’s about to do, but He still weeps with them.
God cares through our suffering.
God cares through our suffering.
God is working in your suffering. There may be a direct purpose or He may just be helping you grow and lean into Him more. But He is loving us through the difficulties that come into our life. Remember with Mary, Martha, and Lazarus; He loved them so He waited two more days.
And we know that for those who love God all things work together for good, for those who are called according to his purpose.
Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of mercies and God of all comfort, who comforts us in all our affliction, so that we may be able to comfort those who are in any affliction, with the comfort with which we ourselves are comforted by God. For as we share abundantly in Christ’s sufferings, so through Christ we share abundantly in comfort too.
One of the best stories in the Bible that shows us how God can be at work in our suffering is the story of Joseph…
As for you, you meant evil against me, but God meant it for good, to bring it about that many people should be kept alive, as they are today.
But we have to remember that this isn’t how it will work out for all of us, we won’t all be moved into positions of wealth and power on the earth after our suffering.
But what everyone of us can trust is that God is there. He cares. He still loves us. That the end of the story will be good!
Whatever you are going through…
We won’t always know the why. We won’t always get to see it. But we must trust that He is good and wants good for us. And we must always trust that…
For I consider that the sufferings of this present time are not worth comparing with the glory that is to be revealed to us.
He will wipe away every tear from their eyes, and death shall be no more, neither shall there be mourning, nor crying, nor pain anymore, for the former things have passed away.”
