Introduction

Two truths and a lie… How do we know what is true?
That’s exactly why Peter wrote his second letter: to counter false teaching by reminding the churches to remember the truth. See 2 Peter 1:12-13 (ESV).
2 Peter 1:12–13 ESV
12 Therefore I intend always to remind you of these qualities, though you know them and are established in the truth that you have. 13 I think it right, as long as I am in this body, to stir you up by way of reminder,
In fact, the call to remember is a theme that runs throughout the entire Bible.
Exodus 20:8 ESV
8 “Remember the Sabbath day, to keep it holy.
1 Chronicles 16:12 ESV
12 Remember the wondrous works that he has done, his miracles and the judgments he uttered,
Ecclesiastes 12:1 ESV
1 Remember also your Creator in the days of your youth, before the evil days come and the years draw near of which you will say, “I have no pleasure in them”;
Isaiah 46:8–9 ESV
8 “Remember this and stand firm, recall it to mind, you transgressors, 9 remember the former things of old; for I am God, and there is no other; I am God, and there is none like me,
Psalm 77:11 ESV
11 I will remember the deeds of the Lord; yes, I will remember your wonders of old.
Ephesians 2:12–13 NIV
12 remember that at that time you were separate from Christ, excluded from citizenship in Israel and foreigners to the covenants of the promise, without hope and without God in the world. 13 But now in Christ Jesus you who once were far away have been brought near by the blood of Christ.
2 Peter 3:1–2 ESV
1 This is now the second letter that I am writing to you, beloved. In both of them I am stirring up your sincere mind by way of reminder, 2 that you should remember the predictions of the holy prophets and the commandment of the Lord and Savior through your apostles,
This call to remember reveals one of the most important things we can learn: Truth > Lies.

Scripture: 2 Peter 1:1-2

2 Peter 1:1–2 ESV
1 Simeon Peter, a servant and apostle of Jesus Christ, To those who have obtained a faith of equal standing with ours by the righteousness of our God and Savior Jesus Christ: 2 May grace and peace be multiplied to you in the knowledge of God and of Jesus our Lord.
In his salutation, Peter reminds us of two important truths.
Our status comes from Jesus, not from our own accomplishments. The measure of your life isn’t your own goodness but the saving love of Christ.
The lie to reject: You have to prove your worth.
The truth to remember: In Christ, you are valued and loved before you do anything. See 2 Peter 1:1.
2 Peter 1:1 ESV
1 Simeon Peter, a servant and apostle of Jesus Christ, To those who have obtained a faith of equal standing with ours by the righteousness of our God and Savior Jesus Christ:
That doesn’t mean we don’t have to do anything. In fact, in the next few sentences, which we’ll look at next week, Peter tells us to remember that how we live matters. See 2 Peter 1:5-7.
2 Peter 1:5–7 ESV
5 For this very reason, make every effort to supplement your faith with virtue, and virtue with knowledge, 6 and knowledge with self-control, and self-control with steadfastness, and steadfastness with godliness, 7 and godliness with brotherly affection, and brotherly affection with love.
But Peter doesn’t start there. He starts by reminding us that in Christ we are valued and loved before we do anything. If we had to start with living like verses 5-7 in order to be valued and loved, I’d be lost!
The application to realize: In Christ, you’re free to enjoy becoming who God created you to be and doing what God calls you to do.
2 Peter 1:2, Grace and peace come from knowing God. The real meaning of life is found in a relationship with God.
2 Peter 1:2 ESV
2 May grace and peace be multiplied to you in the knowledge of God and of Jesus our Lord.
The lie to reject: You’ll only be happy when you get what you want.
If it feels good, do it.
You do you.
You only live once.
Follow your heart.
Self love is the greatest love of all.
FOMO
Illustration: I changed my college major four times because I was afraid of making the wrong choice and ruining my happiness for the rest of my life.
The truth to remember: The point of life is knowing and loving God.
2 Peter 1:2, “knowledge of God and of Jesus,” = knowledge through relationship
2 Peter 1:2 ESV
2 May grace and peace be multiplied to you in the knowledge of God and of Jesus our Lord.
Illustration: I know many things about Corinne, not because I scoped out her Facebook page but because I’m married to her.
The application to realize: You were made for God, you are loved by God, and you will find peace when you rest in a relationship with God.
“Thou movest us to delight in praising Thee; for Thou hast formed us for Thyself, and our hearts are restless till they find their rest in Thee.” (Augustine of Hippo)

Communion Reflection

1 Corinthians 11:23-26… Remember.
1 Corinthians 11:23–26 ESV
23 For I received from the Lord what I also delivered to you, that the Lord Jesus on the night when he was betrayed took bread, 24 and when he had given thanks, he broke it, and said, “This is my body, which is for you. Do this in remembrance of me.” 25 In the same way also he took the cup, after supper, saying, “This cup is the new covenant in my blood. Do this, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of me.” 26 For as often as you eat this bread and drink the cup, you proclaim the Lord’s death until he comes.
Are you trying to justify yourself?
Do you know God?
Remember what he has done for you.
