As Christians we have a resident that is given to us. That resident resides in us for a reason. He the resident is within us to give us power. And that power He gives is to be used to accomplish the mission that we have been given. We are to be more than just moral show pieces. We are called to be salt and light, a preserving and uplifting people to the world. We are to be “God’s change agents” in the world.
But to be the change we have to use the power that is given to us by the person that resides in us, “The Holy Spirit.”
Jesus tells us in,
Acts 1:8 NKJV
But you shall receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you; and you shall be witnesses to Me in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the end of the earth.”
The Holy Spirit is the power that we have been given to help us face the world.
1 John 4:4 NKJV
You are of God, little children, and have overcome them, because He who is in you is greater than he who is in the world.
Tells us in no uncertain terms that the one who is in us is greater than the world. That is an affirmation of the power and the victory that we have.
This morning I want to talk to you about this person, “The Holy Spirit.”I want you to realize exactly what you have in this residing person that is in you. I want you to know that you need this residing person in you to be victorious.
Sometimes we don’t know what we have
There was once a man that had collected coins his whole life.He had lived his life and had a family and raised a son. The man was getting older in his age and came to the realization that he would not be around much longer. So he contacted an attorney and made out a will. The man didn’t have a lot. Just his coin collection and a broken down house. So within his will he left his son one coin from his collection and left the rest to a friend that also collected coins.
The day came that the man passed away. The reading of the will took place. The son got his coin and went home, he was disgusted, angry, and hurt. So he through this coin in a drawer and moved on with his life. Years later he had lost all that he had and preparing to move from his home. He found the coin and looked a little closer at the coin. He removed it from the plastic case it was in and found a note. The note read, The rarest coin I have and the most valuable coin I have I leave to you my child. It was an 1803 Draped Bust Silver Dollar. The son looked up the value of this coin and found out that he had a coin worth $1 million dollars or possibly more.
I think that is an illustration of us at times in our lives as it pertains to the Holy Spirit. We have something, but don’t really know what we have.
When did we come in possession of the Holy Spirit or when did the Holy Spirit come to reside in us?
1 John 3:23–24 NKJV
And this is His commandment: that we should believe on the name of His Son Jesus Christ and love one another, as He gave us commandment. Now he who keeps His commandments abides in Him, and He in him. And by this we know that He abides in us, by the Spirit whom He has given us.
When we believe on the name of Jesus Christ is when we inherit the Holy Spirit. But what does that mean, “believe in the name of Jesus Christ”?
That Jesus came to this earth in human form.
That Jesus came to this earth and took my place on the cross.
That Jesus Christ conquered sin and death by His resurrection.
Romans 8:2 NKJV
For the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus has made me free from the law of sin and death.
The Holy Spirit has made us free from the law of sin and death.
How can we be sure the Spirit is in us?
1 John 4:2 NKJV
By this you know the Spirit of God: Every spirit that confesses that Jesus Christ has come in the flesh is of God,
We proclaim that Jesus came in the flesh. That means everything He did in the flesh, His birth, His life, His death, His resurrection
John 15:26–27 NKJV
“But when the Helper comes, whom I shall send to you from the Father, the Spirit of truth who proceeds from the Father, He will testify of Me. And you also will bear witness, because you have been with Me from the beginning.
Our lives will testify about Him. Our faith, our obedience, our love for Him and for others will be testifying.
John 16:14 NKJV
He will glorify Me, for He will take of what is Mine and declare it to you.
Our lives will bring Glory to Him.
The opposition is never far away
There is one thing that I have come to realize and that is that the Christian life is not a cake walk. It is hard sometimes. Because we live in a fallen world. And this world has its own spirit. The Anti Christ. Somehow we have come to thought that the Anti Christ is someone or something that will not appear until the end. The spirit of the Anti Christ is already here.
1 John 4:3 NKJV
and every spirit that does not confess that Jesus Christ has come in the flesh is not of God. And this is the spirit of the Antichrist, which you have heard was coming, and is now already in the world.
2 Corinthians 4:4 NKJV
whose minds the god of this age has blinded, who do not believe, lest the light of the gospel of the glory of Christ, who is the image of God, should shine on them.
“the god of this age.”
1 Peter 5:8 NKJV
Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil walks about like a roaring lion, seeking whom he may devour.
We have to be aware that the opposition is right around the corner.
Have you ever asked the question, how can they believe something that is that false?
2 Corinthians 11:14–15 NKJV
And no wonder! For Satan himself transforms himself into an angel of light. Therefore it is no great thing if his ministers also transform themselves into ministers of righteousness, whose end will be according to their works.
Sometimes things look good. Sometimes things sound good. Sometimes things are not what they seem.
We always have to be on guard and to not be carried away by every wind of doctrine. (Eph. 4:14) “that we should no longer be children, tossed to and fro and carried about with every wind of doctrine, by the trickery of men, in the cunning craftiness of deceitful plotting,”
Every teaching should be scrutinized to the standard of God’s Word.
The Holy Spirit that resides in you will lead you on this search.
We have to realize what we have through the Holy Spirit.
We have to realize that the opposition is always at work.
But here is the good news!
Victory is a certainty
Many times in our lives we will face or encounter conflict.
I was reading 2 Kings 6 about Elisha and his servant.
We are very much like the servant in this story. We often ask when we are confronted with what seems impossible. “What Shall We Do?”
Elisha and his servant were surrounded and had know where to go. The situation was looking bleak.
Listen to what Elisha said,
2 Kings 6:16 NKJV
So he answered, “Do not fear, for those who are with us are more than those who are with them.”
Elisha went onto pray for his servant that he may see.
2 Kings 6:17 NKJV
And Elisha prayed, and said, “Lord, I pray, open his eyes that he may see.” Then the Lord opened the eyes of the young man, and he saw. And behold, the mountain was full of horses and chariots of fire all around Elisha.
Church we need a fresh vision of the spiritual resources within us.
We need our eyes opened to the realization that
1 John 4:4 ...”He who is in you is greater than he who is in the world.”
Conclusion
Come Holy Spirit, Dark is the hour— We need Your filling, Your love and your mighty power; Move now among us, Stir us, we pray. Come, Holy Spirit, Revive the church today! —John W. Peterson, “Come, Holy Spirit”
Will you respond to the Holy Spirit today?
