Text - Genesis 1.26-28
26 Then God said, “Let Us make mankind in Our image, according to Our likeness; and let them rule over the fish of the sea and over the birds of the sky and over the livestock and over all the earth, and over every crawling thing that crawls on the earth.”
27 So God created man in His own image, in the image of God He created him; male and female He created them.
28 God blessed them; and God said to them, “Be fruitful and multiply, and fill the earth, and subdue it; and rule over the fish of the sea and over the birds of the sky and over every living thing that moves on the earth.”
7 Then the Lord God formed the man of dust from the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and the man became a living person.
Title - The Doctrine of Man
Series - Genesis: The Foundation of Biblical Doctrines, Part 2
Background
Background
2 creation accounts?
2 creation accounts?
Genesis 1 and Genesis 2 are said to be 2 different accounts of the same event
Genesis 2.4-7 reads -
4 This is the account of the heavens and the earth when they were created, in the day that the Lord God made earth and heaven.
5 Now no shrub of the field was yet on the earth, and no plant of the field had yet sprouted, for the Lord God had not sent rain upon the earth, and there was no man to cultivate the ground.
6 But a mist used to rise from the earth and water the whole surface of the ground.
7 Then the Lord God formed the man of dust from the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and the man became a living person.
The phrase, “This is the account of hte heavens and the earth...”
account - Heb. toledoth, record, account, history, generations
the phrase is used to mark the beginning of a narrative concerning people and events
New American Standard Hebrew-Aramaic and Greek Dictionaries: Updated Edition 8435 תּוֹלֵדוֹת (toledoth)
8435. תּוֹלֵדוֹת toledoth (410a); from 3205; generations:—account(1), birth(1), genealogical registration(12), genealogies(3), generations(21), order of their birth(1).
10 such narratives in Genesis
This is the book of the generations of Adam. On the day when God created man, He made him in the likeness of God.
These are the records of the generations of Noah. Noah was a righteous man, blameless in his generation. Noah walked with God.
Now these are the records of the generations of the sons of Noah: Shem, Ham, and Japheth; and sons were born to them after the flood.
Gen 11:10 “These are the records of the generations of Shem. Shem was a hundred years old when he fathered Arpachshad, two years after the flood;”
Gen 11:27 “Now these are the records of the generations of Terah. Terah fathered Abram, Nahor, and Haran; and Haran fathered Lot.”
Gen 25:12 “Now these are the records of the generations of Ishmael, Abraham’s son, whom Hagar the Egyptian, Sarah’s slave woman, bore to Abraham;”
Gen 2:5-6 account reviews the creative act of God before anything appeared on earth
the earth was empty - there was no living thing
Gen 2:7 - the account jumps to the creation of man
still an account of creation, but with man as the focal point
The 3rd stage - creation of man
The 3rd stage - creation of man
Man has been the focal point of the battle between good and evil since the garden of Eden
Satan is harnessing all his power and authority to destroy mankind, and to bring all humanity with him in his downfall and ultimate destruction
Satan is using both ignorance and knowledge to destroy humanity
ignorance of the true God
knowledge that brings pride and arrogance
There is something that Satan knows about man that we take for granted - the way he was created by God
Main Subject
Main Subject
The doctrine of Man teaches us that God created man in the most wonderful way in order to become His people for all eternity.
3 When I consider Your heavens, the work of Your fingers, The moon and the stars, which You have set in place;
4 What is man that You think of him, And a son of man that You are concerned about him?
5 Yet You have made him a little lower than God, And You crown him with glory and majesty!
6 You have him rule over the works of Your hands; You have put everything under his feet,
7 All sheep and oxen, And also the animals of the field,
8 The birds of the sky, and the fish of the sea, Whatever passes through the paths of the seas.
9 Lord, our Lord, How majestic is Your name in all the earth!
man was the most unique of all creation
man was created to be God’s family for eternity
In what ways is man a unique creation of God?
Man was created in the image of God
Man was created in the image of God
26 Then God said, “Let Us make mankind in Our image, according to Our likeness; and let them rule over the fish of the sea and over the birds of the sky and over the livestock and over all the earth, and over every crawling thing that crawls on the earth.”
27 So God created man in His own image, in the image of God He created him; male and female He created them.
Compare with the beasts on day 6 -
Compare with the beasts on day 6 -
the beasts were created with their own kind
24 Then God said, “Let the earth produce living creatures according to their kind: livestock and crawling things and animals of the earth according to their kind”; and it was so. 25 God made the animals of the earth according to their kind, and the livestock according to their kind, and everything that crawls on the ground according to its kind; and God saw that it was good.
kind - a category of things with a common characteristic or quality
man was not created with its own kind; instead, man was created in the image of God
WHAT’S THE POINT?
WHAT’S THE POINT?
GOD DID NOT PRODUCE HIS OWN KIND - OTHERWISE THERE WILL BE MANY GODS BESIDE HIM!
MAN IS NOT A GOD LIKE GOD IS - HE IS NOT OF THE SAME KIND
GOD CANNOT PRODUCE HIS OWN KIND - BECAUSE HE IS SELF-EXISTING!
4 “Hear, Israel! The Lord is our God, the Lord is one!
The “image” and “likeness” of God
The “image” and “likeness” of God
the use of two words here is for purpose of giving stress or emphasis to the object
the words are interchangeable
comparable to -
1 This is the book of the generations of Adam. On the day when God created man, He made him in the likeness of God.
2 He created them male and female, and He blessed them and named them “mankind” on the day when they were created.
3 When Adam had lived 130 years, he fathered a son in his own likeness, according to his image, and named him Seth.
Adam was made in the likeness of God
Adam fathered a son in his own likeness, after his image
also - Deut 5.8
8 ‘You shall not make for yourself a carved image, or any likeness of what is in heaven above or on the earth beneath or in the water under the earth.
Man was created from pre-existing “materials”
Man was created from pre-existing “materials”
first, the image of God - used as pattern
God has a pre-existing image from which man was patterned
the Son was that image!
15 He is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn of all creation:
4 in whose case the god of this world has blinded the minds of the unbelieving so that they will not see the light of the gospel of the glory of Christ, who is the image of God.
note - not “in” the image of God
second, the dust of the ground - used as the material
7 Then the Lord God formed the man of dust from the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and the man became a living person.
this was affirmed immediately after the fall of man
19 By the sweat of your face You shall eat bread, Until you return to the ground, Because from it you were taken; For you are dust, And to dust you shall return.”
Paul confirms this idea
47 The first man is from the earth, earthy; the second man is from heaven.
48 As is the earthy one, so also are those who are earthy; and as is the heavenly one, so also are those who are heavenly.
Significance of being made “in the image of God”
Significance of being made “in the image of God”
Man bears a resemblance to God in his physical features
prophet ezekiel saw God with the figure of a man
26 Now above the expanse that was over their heads there was something resembling a throne, like lapis lazuli in appearance; and on that which resembled a throne, high up, was a figure with the appearance of a man.
figure - heb. demuth, likeness
appearance - heb. mareh, form, visual appearance
Man bears a resemblance to God in his capabilities
he can reason, feel and make decisions
not reason against God’s word, but against the enemy’s ideas
he can create (using existing materials)
Ecc 7:29 - God made man upright, but we they sought many schemes
he can procreate
Malachi 2:15 - God is seeking godly children in our homes and marriages
he was given authority
Man was made to be identified with God!
God wants to be seen in mankind
God wants mankind to look like Him, act like Him, behave like Him, think and feel like Him!
Man was made male and female
Man was made male and female
27 So God created man in His own image, in the image of God He created him; male and female He created them.
Mankind is to be composed of 2 sexes only
Mankind is to be composed of 2 sexes only
male - the masculine sex
female - the feminine sex
This truth was affirmed by Christ
4 And He answered and said, “Have you not read that He who created them from the beginning made them male and female,
WHAT’S THE POINT?
WHAT’S THE POINT?
ALL OTHER GENDERS ARE NOT OF GOD!
THE INVENTION OF GENDERS OUTSIDE OF GOD’S DESIGN ARE MEANT TO DESTROY THE WORK OF GOD AND THE IMAGE OF GOD!
Both the male and female genders bear the image of God
Both the male and female genders bear the image of God
both man and woman bear the resemblance of God
in their physical features
in their capabilities
WHAT’S THE POINT?
WHAT’S THE POINT?
BOTH THE MAN AND THE WOMAN ARE IMPORTANT TO GOD
BOTH ARE CARED FOR BY GOD
BOTH HAVE THEIR PROPER PLACE IN GOD’S PLAN
Man was made to be a living person
Man was made to be a living person
7 Then the Lord God formed the man of dust from the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and the man became a living person.
living person - Heb nephesh hayyah - living being
Meaning of “living person”
Meaning of “living person”
self-consciousness - man is the only being that has full consciousness or awareness of himself
all the animals have instincts and basic abilities
this is called the “soul”
God-consciousness - man is the only being that has the knowledge and awareness of God
he can speak with God
he can feel the presence of God
all animals have no such idea
WHAT’S THE POINT?
WHAT’S THE POINT?
MAN IS NOT A SPIRIT IN A BODY, NOR A BODY WITH A SPIRIT -
MAN IS ALL OF IT - BODY, SOUL AND SPIRIT
23 Now may the God of peace Himself sanctify you entirely; and may your spirit and soul and body be kept complete, without blame at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ.
note - the goal is to keep the whole person complete
EVEN IF THE HUMAN SPIRIT CAN EXIST OUTSIDE ITS BODY -
THAT IS A TEMPORARY SITUATION
HE SPIRIT AND PHYSICAL PARTS OF A PERSON COME TOGETHER IN THE END TO GO TO HIS FINAL DESTINATION
Conclusion
Conclusion
Man is truly God’s most unique creation!
Man is truly God’s most unique creation!
Even after the fall, the uniqueness remains -
the image is present and upheld by God
6 “Whoever sheds human blood, By man his blood shall be shed, For in the image of God He made mankind.
the wonders of God’s creation is still amazing -
14 I will give thanks to You, because I am awesomely and wonderfully made; Wonderful are Your works, And my soul knows it very well.
15 My frame was not hidden from You When I was made in secret, And skillfully formed in the depths of the earth;
16 Your eyes have seen my formless substance; And in Your book were written All the days that were ordained for me, When as yet there was not one of them.
17 How precious also are Your thoughts for me, God! How vast is the sum of them!
18 Were I to count them, they would outnumber the sand. When I awake, I am still with You.
How much more now that you have been redeemed from sin and restored into fellowship with God!
Rejoice in the work of God in you
Don’t listen to the lies of the enemy -
that your body is a mistake
that you are not the man or woman that God designed you to be
Any idea that goes against God design for man and woman is sin, evil and abomination
You were created to CONNECT with God (with your spirit)
You were made to CREATE like God, using existing materials for God’s glory!
