Matthew 12:1–8 NKJV
1 At that time Jesus went through the grainfields on the Sabbath. And His disciples were hungry, and began to pluck heads of grain and to eat. 2 And when the Pharisees saw it, they said to Him, “Look, Your disciples are doing what is not lawful to do on the Sabbath!” 3 But He said to them, “Have you not read what David did when he was hungry, he and those who were with him: 4 how he entered the house of God and ate the showbread which was not lawful for him to eat, nor for those who were with him, but only for the priests? 5 Or have you not read in the law that on the Sabbath the priests in the temple profane the Sabbath, and are blameless? 6 Yet I say to you that in this place there is One greater than the temple. 7 But if you had known what this means, ‘I desire mercy and not sacrifice,’ you would not have condemned the guiltless. 8 For the Son of Man is Lord even of the Sabbath.”

Wrestling With The Tension in the Text.

Matthew 12:1–2 NKJV
1 At that time Jesus went through the grainfields on the Sabbath. And His disciples were hungry, and began to pluck heads of grain and to eat. 2 And when the Pharisees saw it, they said to Him, “Look, Your disciples are doing what is not lawful to do on the Sabbath!”

The accusation is working on the Sabath.

Exodus 31:14–15 NKJV
14 You shall keep the Sabbath, therefore, for it is holy to you. Everyone who profanes it shall surely be put to death; for whoever does any work on it, that person shall be cut off from among his people. 15 Work shall be done for six days, but the seventh is the Sabbath of rest, holy to the Lord. Whoever does any work on the Sabbath day, he shall surely be put to death.

This is not a truthful accusation. This is a distraction!

Deuteronomy 23:25 NKJV
25 When you come into your neighbor’s standing grain, you may pluck the heads with your hand, but you shall not use a sickle on your neighbor’s standing grain.

The heart of the Pharisee is position over piety. Haughty not Holy.

Revelation 12:10 NKJV
10 Then I heard a loud voice saying in heaven, “Now salvation, and strength, and the kingdom of our God, and the power of His Christ have come, for the accuser of our brethren, who accused them before our God day and night, has been cast down.

God cannot break His own Law.

Psalm 119:89–90 NKJV
89 Forever, O Lord, Your word is settled in heaven. 90 Your faithfulness endures to all generations; You established the earth, and it abides.

The Disciples were not breaking the Law of the sabbath.

Deuteronomy 23:25 NKJV
25 When you come into your neighbor’s standing grain, you may pluck the heads with your hand, but you shall not use a sickle on your neighbor’s standing grain.
This is not working.
using a sickle would be working and stealing.
why did they do this ?
Popularity, Jealousy, position over piety.

The Lord is relational, so, His word is also relational.

1 Samuel 21:6 NKJV
6 So the priest gave him holy bread; for there was no bread there but the showbread which had been taken from before the Lord, in order to put hot bread in its place on the day when it was taken away.
Jesus is pointing out that every part of the law is righteousness; Righteousness, is about relationship.
My relationship with God is working in me, toward His righteousness.
God feed David and His men in the house, relationship.
. Matthew 12:3–5
Matthew 12:3–5 NKJV
3 But He said to them, “Have you not read what David did when he was hungry, he and those who were with him: 4 how he entered the house of God and ate the showbread which was not lawful for him to eat, nor for those who were with him, but only for the priests? 5 Or have you not read in the law that on the Sabbath the priests in the temple profane the Sabbath, and are blameless?

12:5 The fact that priests, in carrying out their duties, had to work on (and thus “profane”) the Sabbath, but were guiltless in doing so, shows that God made allowances within the law.

The priest carry out the offering for the sabbath, but God made an allowance for the priest because of the man.
why did Jesus go here with them, because it is their traditions over God’s word.

The Lord wants us to be relational.

Matthew 12:5–7 NKJV
5 Or have you not read in the law that on the Sabbath the priests in the temple profane the Sabbath, and are blameless? 6 Yet I say to you that in this place there is One greater than the temple. 7 But if you had known what this means, ‘I desire mercy and not sacrifice,’ you would not have condemned the guiltless.
Hosea 6:6 NKJV
6 For I desire mercy and not sacrifice, And the knowledge of God more than burnt offerings.

Jesus defends His disciples and proclaims that He is the Lord at the same time!

Matthew 12:7–8 NKJV
7 But if you had known what this means, ‘I desire mercy and not sacrifice,’ you would not have condemned the guiltless. 8 For the Son of Man is Lord even of the Sabbath.”

1. Never let the ‘Look of Holiness’ Keep you for perusing Christ likeness.

Sometimes Holiness and the look of Holiness are opposite.
Putting someone else up to preach.

2. Don’t let the jealousy of others keep you from the pursuit of Christ.

3. Let the Lord fight your battles.
