I. They Find Fault With The Message. v.30a

30 But the Pharisees and lawyers rejected the counsel of God against themselves, …
Who are they?
Pharisees and lawyers -
“Pharisees” - separated ones. Proven to be hypocrites as they taught one thing and lived another (Matthew 23:1-3)
The words “woe” and “Pharisees” occur together 10 times in the Bible. 10 = law
“lawyers” - among the Jews, was one versed in the laws of Moses, which he expounded in the schools and synagogues (Matt. 22:35; Luke 10:25).i
Jesus said “Woe unto you, lawyers” twice (Luke 11:45, 52). 2 = testimony, witness
What they did.
rejected the counsel of God against themselves
When the preaching is direct to you, what do you do?
When the preacher is direct to you, what do you do?
Did you notice that the preaching and the preacher is referred to as the “counsel of God”?
The message is FOR you: it is food (Acts 20:28; 1 Peter 5:2)
The message is TO you: it is fellowship!

II. They Find Fault With The Messenger. v.30b

30b …being not baptized of him.
33 For John the Baptist came neither eating bread nor drinking wine; and ye say, He hath a devil.
What was wrong with John in their eyes?
They didn’t like his dunking. V.30b (Luke 3:3, 16)
They didn’t like his doctrine. (Luke 3:7-9; John 3:30)
They didn’t like his diet. V.33
He didn’t eat what they ate.
He didn’t drink what they drank.
When we quit preaching against something the church fills up with it. (Proverbs 23:29-35)

III. They Find Fault With The Men. vs.31-32

The generation. V.31
31 And the Lord said, Whereunto then shall I liken the men of this generation? and to what are they like?
“generation” - all the people born or living at the same time
Jesus is referring to those alive at that time.
The description. V.32
32 They are like unto children sitting in the marketplace, and calling one to another, and saying, We have piped unto you, and ye have not danced; we have mourned to you, and ye have not wept.
They are only comfortable around each other.

Paul said “I die daily” because he had to be around others not like him to win them.
They are entertainers not evangelist.
We have piped unto you, and ye have not danced
They are tell stories not sermons.

IV. They Find Fault With The Messiah. vs.34-35

34 The Son of man is come eating and drinking; and ye say, Behold a gluttonous man, and a winebibber, a friend of publicans and sinners!
35 But wisdom is justified of all her children.
The Pharisees and critics always justify their double standards.
His diet is not perfect to them.
eating and drinking
His disciples are not perfect to them.
publicans and sinners
What you were will never be forgotten by them.
What you are will never be good enough.
