Choosing Righteousness: Making the Right Decisions in Life
Making “right” decisions automatically denotes making wrong ones
can’t go back in time
Objectives
Know the Bible
This World is Not Your Home
God Defines Who You Are

1. Know The Bible

Psalm 119:105 ESV
Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path.
Without the Bible you are walking in darkness. You are on your own
Even if you claim to be a follower of Jesus and not a follower of His word.
You’re follow a version of Jesus whom you wish him to be and not who he truly is.
Three things happen when you don’t know the Bible

A. You Will be Ignorant of Biblical Truth

John 17:17 ESV
Sanctify them in the truth; your word is truth.

B. You Will be Vulnerable to False Teaching

2 Peter 2:1–2 ESV
But false prophets also arose among the people, just as there will be false teachers among you, who will secretly bring in destructive heresies, even denying the Master who bought them, bringing upon themselves swift destruction. And many will follow their sensuality, and because of them the way of truth will be blasphemed.
2 Timothy 4:3–4 ESV
For the time is coming when people will not endure sound teaching, but having itching ears they will accumulate for themselves teachers to suit their own passions, and will turn away from listening to the truth and wander off into myths.

C. You Will be Spiritually Immature

Hebrews 5:11–12 ESV
About this we have much to say, and it is hard to explain, since you have become dull of hearing. For though by this time you ought to be teachers, you need someone to teach you again the basic principles of the oracles of God. You need milk, not solid food,
Galatians 4:3 ESV
In the same way we also, when we were children, were enslaved to the elementary principles of the world.
This describes the majority of the Lord’s church today
Only 10% read the bible (only 20% pray)
The end result is you’re walking in darkness trying to piece it all together - trying to make sense of it all
You now try to incorporate all kinds of things into YOUR theology to try and make it feel good.

2. This World Is Not Your Home

When someone does not believe in God, heaven and the afterlife, this world is all there is to them
1 Corinthians 15:19 ESV
If in Christ we have hope in this life only, we are of all people most to be pitied.
If this is it - folk will fight dirty, claw, and even kill to get their way
They believe that when they die they believe they’ll be completely annihilated
So because they don’t believe in heaven, they’ll believe a follow any demigod, false teacher, guru, politician that promises they can implement their version of heaven here on earth were everything is free
So when you see that angry passion, over emotionalism, and desperation, it’s because the feel they need to get their way.
Why - because this is it
I too would like things to be a certain way here on earth
But I also know, that’s not always going to be the case
John 16:33 ESV
I have said these things to you, that in me you may have peace. In the world you will have tribulation. But take heart; I have overcome the world.”
Peace is not the absence of problems
Romans 8:28 ESV
And we know that for those who love God all things work together for good, for those who are called according to his purpose.

3. God Defines Who You Are

Why does it SEEM like some sins are so difficult to overcome (homosexuality, sexual sins)

A. The world attributes these sins as being a part of our identity

Discrimination policy: person's national origin, race, color, religion, disability, sex, and gender, sexual orientation.
We don’t say I identify as liars, or fornicators
We don’t use pronouns to help someone properly identify us as such

B. The world attributes these sins as being a human right

Is wrong to preach against it

C. Repentance

This is not just a lifestyle - YOU ASKING ME TO REPENT OF WHO I AM
The Hebrew word for repentance is Tashuva
It give the connotation of a house being burnt down.
YOUR SIN DOES NOT DEFINE YOU
Romans 6:12–13 ESV
Let not sin therefore reign in your mortal body, to make you obey its passions. Do not present your members to sin as instruments for unrighteousness, but present yourselves to God as those who have been brought from death to life, and your members to God as instruments for righteousness.
1 Peter 2:9 ESV
But you are a chosen race, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people for his own possession, that you may proclaim the excellencies of him who called you out of darkness into his marvelous light.
