Exodus 20:1–3 ESV
And God spoke all these words, saying, “I am the Lord your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of slavery. “You shall have no other gods before me.
What does it mean to have no other God’s before me?
The Literal meaning: forbids loyalty to any deity other than God
The Biblical meaning: forbids loyalty to anything when that loyalty is held to a higher standard in our life than God.
What could we be loyal to that would be sinful?
In reality our loyalty is only sinful when our loyalty removes us from God’s will for our life.
I would always encourage each of you to be loyal to the things that you commit to.
But I do think there are some important questions to ask when determining if this loyalty affects our relationship with Christ.
What are some questions you think would be important to ask?
Does this affect me going to church?
Does this affect my prayer time and devotion?
Does this affect me inviting someone else to learn about Jesus?
Does this require me to sin in another way?
Is this something that will bring God glory or myself?
Remember the Phrase, “I am the Lord your God”
What do you think that God was telling them?
God was reminding them that they ahve made a decision to follow Him and that he has been faithful.
So if you find yourself here today, saved, you have an obligation to follow God’s law in obedience.
I would encourage you to consider what that obedience looks like to you.
It is ok to have hobbies and things you enjoy and people you love.
But does it take you away from God?
If it does it needs removed from your life.
If you don’t know Jesus and find yourself saying I put everything over God.
he is calling you to give up the ways of your life and follow Him.
To look to him for guidance and support and not the world.
