This morning we gather to continue our series in through the 10 Commandments
Remember the commandments were sort of broken into 2 groups by Jesus
The first 4 can be summed up
Matthew 22:37 NASB95
37 And He said to him, “ ‘You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your mind.’
If we expect to Love God with our entire being then we should be doing the first 4 commands
No other Gods before Him
No Idols
Do Not take the Lords name in vain
Keep the Sabbath
And if you expect to be doing those first 4 commands then it will require you to Love God with your entire being
Remember the first 4 commands deal with a relationship between you and God
No one else
And the reason they are first is because once that relationship is established
Then you can move to the relationships with other humans
And so it is fitting that we start with some of the most important and formidable relationships you will experience
They are important because you can learn so much from them
They are formidable because they do form they way you act for probably the rest of your life
Outside of your relationship with Christ they have such an impact on who you are as a person
Wow that seems like such an important command
You would think just maybe we should follow it
Well the other unique thing about this command is that it is the only command with a promise attached to it
Exodus 20:12 NASB95
12 “Honor your father and your mother, that your days may be prolonged in the land which the Lord your God gives you.
Hone your Father and Your Mother
Hmmm
Seems pretty simple
To Honor them is to show esteem for them through our conduct

includes esteem of them, shown in our conduct

With this particular command there is a bunch of interesting things that are going on
First you are to honor your father and your mother
POSSIBLE POEM ABOUT NAME
How you act reflects on your parents
And you want to show them respect by your actions when around people and you want to show your parents respect when you are by yourself
It does reflect your parents
Same is true when you do something not so smart
It reflects on them
You are to obey them
Even when you think you know better
And lets be clear
For those who are not obeying their parents you are breaking the law
When they say something or give you direction you need to follow it
Second
We see the protection of the family
God has put the family unit together and there is a pecking order
Kids you are not in charge
Parents they are not in charge
But with that family unity we see that God has put the importance of honor not just on the father in the home but also the mother
That is very unique because women did not have such status
But here you see God put the mothers in a position of being honor just like the father
You are to honor them both
Now we see of the 10 commandments this is the only one attached with a promise to it
The others are understood if you break the law there is punishment
But this particular promise is for if you fulfill the command
What does Honor Mean
It doesn’t say if or when to honor them
What does our day will be prolonged mean
The promise of living a long life means what
How do we honor our parents when they don’t do very honorable things
This morning as we begin our 5th Commandment
I was asked to share a brief few minutes about the National Day of Prayer
And it is interesting that I get to speak about that on the day we cover the 5th Commandment
See Prayer was something that was passed down to me from my parents and especially my mom
We would pray each morning before I went off to school
When something was bothering me as soon as I told my mom she would tell me to be praying about it
See prayer was an important thing passed down from my mom to me
National Day of prayer is an opportunity for us as a church to gather together and pray and cry out to God
That is what He is asking us to do
We here at Maranatha have seen what happens when people who are called by His name gather together to cry out to God
For National Day of prayer the verse is
James 5:16 NASB95
16 Therefore, confess your sins to one another, and pray for one another so that you may be healed. The effective prayer of a righteous man can accomplish much.
I would encourage you to start now praying that God would do amazing things, that God would begin to move mightly
We have seen what happens when righteous men and women gather to cry out in Gods name
I would also encourage you to come on May 4th at 6:30 PM
