Intro

Commandments sometimes seem so simple
Command number 6 what is it?
Ok now 7?
we are in a section of the commands that seem rather simple
Dont murder
Dont commit adultery
Dont steal
do not bear false witness against your neighbor
Do not covet
All of these we can say great i know how to do this
check
check
check
I’m good right??????
Well lets ask that question
is it enough that I just dont do these things then i get into heaven
No remember the rich young ruler
One more thing you lack
Give over your life
These commands are not just dont do this
But really submit your life
This brings us to this 7th commandment
Dont commit adultery
Ok......
So how does this apply to you all
Who is married in here
So I guess this is just a later commandment
Lets go enjoy some donuts
No it applies even now
to you
You must ask the question
Why
Why is this verse here
What should I learn from it
How should I live in light of it
So why is this verse in here?????
Well lets look at what adultery is
sexual relations outside of marriage
ok well whats wrong with that????
It tears away at the very fabric of how we were created
Genesis 1:28 ESV
28 And God blessed them. And God said to them, “Be fruitful and multiply and fill the earth and subdue it, and have dominion over the fish of the sea and over the birds of the heavens and over every living thing that moves on the earth.”
Genesis 2:18–24 ESV
18 Then the Lord God said, “It is not good that the man should be alone; I will make him a helper fit for him.” 19 Now out of the ground the Lord God had formed every beast of the field and every bird of the heavens and brought them to the man to see what he would call them. And whatever the man called every living creature, that was its name. 20 The man gave names to all livestock and to the birds of the heavens and to every beast of the field. But for Adam there was not found a helper fit for him. 21 So the Lord God caused a deep sleep to fall upon the man, and while he slept took one of his ribs and closed up its place with flesh. 22 And the rib that the Lord God had taken from the man he made into a woman and brought her to the man. 23 Then the man said, “This at last is bone of my bones and flesh of my flesh; she shall be called Woman, because she was taken out of Man.” 24 Therefore a man shall leave his father and his mother and hold fast to his wife, and they shall become one flesh.
This is the beginning of marriage
Pre fall
Before the world went awry
Man and women were to be together and multiply
make babies
Sex was designed for the marital context
Today we have perverted it
It has been perverted ever since the fall
Thats why this command is here
its here because sexuality has been so perverted from God’s original intent
it seems easy dont commit adultry ok
but there is more going on here
Read Matthew 5:27-28
Matthew 5:27–28 ESV
27 “You have heard that it was said, ‘You shall not commit adultery.’ 28 But I say to you that everyone who looks at a woman with lustful intent has already committed adultery with her in his heart.
1 Thessalonians 4:3–5 ESV
3 For this is the will of God, your sanctification: that you abstain from sexual immorality; 4 that each one of you know how to control his own body in holiness and honor, 5 not in the passion of lust like the Gentiles who do not know God;
Sexual purity matters to God
This commandments isnt a later commandment
It’s a now commandment
We must be sexually pure
We must not defile what God has created for our good
We Must be self controled
A fruit of the spirit
Proof of the holy spirit working in us
This is bigger than just cheating on your spouse this is surrendering your life to God and lookin to his way and not the worlds way
Ephesians 5:3–4 ESV
3 But sexual immorality and all impurity or covetousness must not even be named among you, as is proper among saints. 4 Let there be no filthiness nor foolish talk nor crude joking, which are out of place, but instead let there be thanksgiving.
