Matthew 5:20 ESV
For I tell you, unless your righteousness exceeds that of the scribes and Pharisees, you will never enter the kingdom of heaven.
Intro:
The Diving Board into OT Law
Anger, Lust, Divorce, Retaliation, promise keeping.

Kingdom Citizens Worshipfully Obey Jesus

Worship= Praise and adoration to God for who he is.
Obedience:
Proper response of worship …
Jesus is getting at the Intent of the Law
The Letter of the Law vs Intent
Graham (Taking his paci away, cant eat mac and cheese for breakfast, Coffee etc)
God desires that the Law leads to worship, and keeping it comes from a heart of worship.
Transition:
Today we are going to zero in on one issue that we all deal with and some of us more than others! So lets set the table. Who has ever been angry with someone else? lets pray!

Big Idea: We Have To Deal With Our Anger.

Pray

Part 1: Your Anger V 21-22

Matthew 5:21–22 ESV
“You have heard that it was said to those of old, ‘You shall not murder; and whoever murders will be liable to judgment.’ But I say to you that everyone who is angry with his brother will be liable to judgment; whoever insults his brother will be liable to the council; and whoever says, ‘You fool!’ will be liable to the hell of fire.
Structure of these sections:
- You have heard it said = Said vs its original intent (They missed the point).
But I say = God incarnate is clarifying the purpose of the Law.
A. Jesus condemns an attitude or action...
B. gives an example of this action...
C. then addresses the due penalty.... (Earthly Penalty & Eternal consequences)
In this he is clarifying the true intent of the Law.

What Actions Does The Passage address:

Murder V 21 - Criminal Killing

Matthew 5:21 ESV
“You have heard that it was said to those of old, ‘You shall not murder; and whoever murders will be liable to judgment.’
Due Penalty = Liable to Judgement

Anger V 22a- (internal)

Matthew 5:22 ESV
But I say to you that everyone who is angry with his brother will be liable to judgment; whoever insults his brother will be liable to the council; and whoever says, ‘You fool!’ will be liable to the hell of fire.
Due Penalty = Judgement
The due penalty of Anger is the same as Murder.
Anger defined = Unrestrained strong emotions of displeasure
Righteous Anger and unrighteous anger
Anger Towards a Brother = is always a miss placed expectation on them.
Transition = What does anger look like when it boils itself out of our mouths..
Matthew 15:18 ESV
But what comes out of the mouth proceeds from the heart, and this defiles a person.

Insult V 22b - (External)

Insult = Rhaka (Emptying of ones self)
You Fool = Moron
This is to dress them down.
Due Penalty= “Liable to Hell Fire”
Gehenna = A Trash Dump.... often used to symbolize eternal Hell (James, Matthew, Luke)
Tie it all up =
Everyone is… is guilty.
Everyone has an anger issue
our inside thoughts are terrible… and when it spews out of our mouth often it is worse.
Gospel Truth:
Jesus does not want to leave you there!
Jesus wants us to deal with it.
He wants us to experience what the kingdom is like now...
Transition: If we want Kingdom living we must address it and Jesus does not leave us in our anger but rather he gives a path towards dealing with it.… so how? Part 2

Part 2: Dealing with it (your anger) v 23-26

Matthew 5:23–26 ESV
So if you are offering your gift at the altar and there remember that your brother has something against you, leave your gift there before the altar and go. First be reconciled to your brother, and then come and offer your gift. Come to terms quickly with your accuser while you are going with him to court, lest your accuser hand you over to the judge, and the judge to the guard, and you be put in prison. Truly, I say to you, you will never get out until you have paid the last penny.

How much does Jesus care about you dealing with your anger?!?

First be reconciled..... before you bring your gift to the Alter....
He is giving an example (You are going to make a sacrifice and you see a brother who you are angry with)
Jesus is trying to double down that we need to make things right with each other.
You got a problem with someone in this room.... deal with it (potentially before you show up)

What does it mean to be reconciled...

Define: to restore or make right a relationship of two “things”.
To Be vs To do. V 24 (God is in this)
The banking process of Reconciliation.
To be made right
So how do we do this: (Earthy & Eternal)
Admit our need.
Repent of your sin against God and your brother…
Right the wrong.
Where do we do this:
In Prayer (With Jesus)
In relationships (With each-other)
3. In the context of community (Council, Judgement this is for our benifit)
Back to Jesus intent
He wants his people to experience the kingdom now.
In the Kingdom of God rights are made wrong
He doesn't want us to live with our anger any more.
Closing Statement: As I close… ya’ll are going to be talking about some heavy stuff the next few weeks and I am praying with your leadership that God does some amazing reconciliation work in our midst. That Sin is brought to life and its dealt with. So again if you need someone to walk with you through this first I will be up front to pray… and secondly..... reach out!
