The Helper
The Helper
26 But the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, he will teach you all things and bring to your remembrance all that I have said to you
The Holy Bible: English Standard Version (Wheaton, IL: Crossway Bibles, 2016), Jn 14:26.
In the first two passages we see that God speaks through His Word and through His creation. Last week, I shared that we are to be ambassadors for Christ. The temptation here could be well, God speaks through these other avenues, so I just have to live a good life.
But we were called to be Ambassadors for Christ. How’d that go this last week. Did anyone struggle? Part of being the Ambassador is that we have a message to deliver through words and actions. As I said last week, This is hard.
Looking back at John for a minute, prior to our passage, Jesus and his disciples have are in the upper room having finished the Lord Supper and Judas being sent to do his business.
Jesus tells them again eludes to His crucifixion saying He is leaving and they can’t follow.
Peter asks where Jesus is going. Thomas asks how we can follow if we don’t know where Jesus went, Philip asks to see the Father and Judas not Iscariot asks How will Jesus reveal himself to us.
The disciples know that a change is imminent and are concerned, worried and/afraid. Up to this point, if they had a question they asked Jesus. If they didn’t know what to do they could ask God face to face.
You know, as ambassadors this is our challenge and excuse we use. But God… I don’t know what to say. But God… I don’t know what to do. But God… I don’t know the scripture
Jesus tells the disciples and us that you are not alone. We receive the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit will teach us what we need to know. It doesn’t mean we will know everything. Our brains have a limited storage capacity. But we will know what we need to know.
Then as we fulfill our role as Ambassador for the kingdom, The Holy Spirit will bring that infomation back to us as needed. This doesn’t mean we will neccessarily know passage and verse in the middle of a crisis, or that we will handle the moment well. But we will know what to say and how to act because the Helper will remind us. Afterwards the Helper will teach us from those moments.
We don’t have to be the most educated or the have a Doctrate in Theology in order to be Ambassadors for Christ. We have a Helper in the Holy Spirit that gives us all the knowledge and wisdom required.
