Frist John chapter 1: 5-10. God, sin, fellowship and Jesus’ life and death… resurrection coming back.
Where is the teaching from:
Verse 5 This is the massage we have heard Jesus’ teaching and proclaim it to you: The author again points out that what he is writing is the what Jesus said and they heard. And now what to share with people.
God is light, wow – that is a very loaded word. One wrote all light is from God, directly or indirectly, since God made the light, and everything ells that makes light has been made off God.
I was reading article after article and light and darkness is mega themes in the OT and NT, and in many different forms. PPT x2 light and darkness as the words used.
The word used is physical light, John and other OT and NT writers used the word in a spiritual sense. God is light, = completely Holy, life giving, true, righteous, no sin, completeness, what brings salvation, what enables us to see, understanding, faithful God is complete with no fault or sin. God is like that and there is no darkness in God, no sin, unholiness, chaos, unrighteousness, no lack, no lies. Darkness can also symbolize as the ppt say: people that are blind to the gospel and are under the power of sin and evil. God is none of that.
Is that how you and I see and understand God? (Glory in unapproachable light)
Why would john and the people write that? (To ground them in the glory of who God is, and in Jesus teaching about who God is a correct view and love for God changes everything and that will also help us live out Jesus teaching instead of making up something ells).
Verse 6. Because people can say (if we say) many things about God, with out backing it up… Yes, I believe in Jesus, I believe in God, yes, I am a Christian, the letter addresses the claim to have fellowship with God, koinonia with him, so a close intimate relationship of knowing, serving, offering, - not all that say that have that have it. Because if a person say they have fellowship with God, but walk in darkness, = it is a lie, they don’t walk according to the truth of who God is, but walk in darkness, we lie and don’t live out the truth. (if we don’t walk /live it out, we are in darkness, it is not enough to say something, we live it out our faith, or we do not have fellowship with God, we lie to others and our self, and to God, we are like blind people that say we can see… As the Pharisees when they clamed to know God. What great darkness if we think the darkness is light. (All kind of sin a rebellion). PPT life style walking.
Then what, the great news is we don’t have to walk in darkness /rebellion and sin.
Verse 7. We can walk in the light, as God is light (all the things mentioned above and - understanding the Gospel of Jesus Christ), that will make show us we have fellowship with the other believers /one another. And that is great news, because of what comes next, that if we have fellowship with one another and walk in the light, we can have fellowship with God because his son Jesus blood cleanses us from all sin. Therefore, we don’t have to walk in darkness but can come to the light. Because of the good news of the gospel that Jesus came, lived, died shedding his blood, rising again, - the blood of Jesus cleanses us from all sin. Like a shower/washing machine, stain remover, like a cleansing proses all of us were full of sin and stained, Jesus’ blood cleanses us form sin. The blood of sacrifices was not able to take away sin and cleanse us, they were just a shadow, Jesus’ blood was needed. Therefor today we can’t do good works to be forgiven or win the favor of God, no our religious works and good deeds are worth nothing, if we try to win favor by God in our own strength, no only by the blood of Jesus can we be cleansed, and accepted, not by our doing but what Jesus have done. (Have you received that? Do we rejoice in that?) PPT – Holiness creates fellowship, Jesus’ blood cleanses from all sin).
Verse 8 After John talks about sin, it is like he has to explain more: if we say we don’t sin, but that Jesus cleanses us from it. Therefore, if we say we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and what we say is a lie, the truth is not in us. (We are in darkness). Have you met people that say they don’t have any sin? They would not come to God, because they would not need Jesus, they are deceived. Like the pharisees or very religious people today, that think they are right with God because of what they do. Or people today, that are blind, they have found salvation in what they do, or in fame, riches, poverty, influence money, the known mantra today, I am a good person, most would admit they are not perfect, well I don’t do really bad things, I am not like Hitler, no, but that is not what is stated, but it is clear that many, even us, are deceived when it comes to see our own sin, we might hid it, say it is not sin it is a struggle, or that is just the way I am, but in all cases it is a lie we deceive our self and we speak lies. To our self and others or children’s friends. Oh, your good person, well Jesus is good and we really need him. Because if we are not honest, we can’t come to God with our sin and be cleansed by Jesus. We instead reject the need for Jesus’ blood to cleanse us, we reject Jesus, and call God a liar. PPT confronted by sin, confess it… or lie and call God a liar.
Instead, our great hope of verse 9 is that if we confess our sins to God, he is faithful to forgive us and cleanse us from all unrighteousness. What joy… That when we confess our sins, instead of hiding and minimizing and desciving our self, we can instead be cleansed of our sin, by a faithful and just God, that cleanses us from our sin and unrighteousness, by the blood of Jesus. That should make us run to God to confess our sin, to be made clean…
But then why do we fell like hiding, doing good works to make up for our sin, to earn back God’s favor? Or run away from God, and people we have sinned against? Like little children trying to clean up there own mess making it worse… Broken we try to heal our self instead running to the great physician
Could it be because we have missed the gospel and grace of God in Jesus, that invites us to come even when we failed again… and again… John points God as being light, draws us near by the blood of Jesus Christ. But do we understand? Are we really trusting in Jesus Christ for the forgiveness and cleansing of our sins? Oh, what freedom and joy it would be for us. It is done. That Christ blood is our cleansing, from all unrighteousness.
We don’t have to lie and say we have not sinned, if we do, we make God a liar, and Jesus died for no reason. God did not send Jesus to die and have his blood schead, for no reason, no, it was because he love the world that God send Jesus the Christ that we might be cleansed for our sin, and by faith and trust in his grace and mercy, we can keep coming to him for forgiveness and cleansing.
Recap: God is light in him there is no darkness at all. (God loved us first do we trust and believe that?)
We can have fellowship with God because of Jesus Christ life, death, resurrection (work), coming back in this case Jesus blood that cleanses from sin. If we reject that we walk in darkness, we don’t have fellowship with God, instead we lie and are blind. But we are asked to trust in God the true light and are invited in to fellowship koinonia with one another and Jesus Gods son, who’s blood cleanses us from all sin.
Then we are not to be so arrogant to say we have no sin and lie and deceice our self instead, run to Jesus for cleansing of our sin. And we are asked to do that to confess our sin and because God is light and faithful, there is forgiveness and cleansing form all righteousness. Come to the light.
Rejection is making God a liar, and we don’t have us word in us. We are in darkness….
