Good morning Poinciana South!
Lets open with a word of prayer.
Does anyone remember the theme for chapel this year?
That’s right, the great commission, these were Jesus’ last words of instruction to His disciples before He ascended into Heaven. He said.
19 Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit,
20 and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.”
The verse I want us to focus on, are the words He says right before giving the commission. Let’s look at
18 And Jesus came and spoke to them, saying, “All authority has been given to Me in heaven and on earth.
Jesus Rules!
Jesus Rules!
Jesus rules, He has all authority. Jesus is saying that He rules over heaven and earth, He rules over everything we can see and everything we can’t see.
Jesus is the Son of God. He came to earth as God’s gift of love and kindness to us.
16 For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.
Jesus taught and showed us the right way to live, he healed diseases, and did miracles and wonders to show us that He is truly the Son of God, but some still people rejected Jesus, and the question is will you reject Jesus today too? Our sin, meaning all the wrong things we do, deserve the punishment of God. Jesus took our punishment by dying for us on the cross, so now when you accept him as your Lord and Savior, and seek forgiveness from God, you are forgiven because Jesus took our punishment, He died for us.
The great news is that Jesus rose from the dead, in doing so He defeated evil for you and me, and when you accept him, you stand in his victory. When you belong to Jesus, the weight of guilt has no power over you, the chain of fear has no power over you, powers of hell and evil schemes of people can’t take you from Him, because he defeated all of those things for us. When you accept Jesus, you stand in his victory, you live in his authority over all things.
This is great news because Jesus rules out love for you and me and he uses His authority for our benefit.
Example: Ms. Gonzales is the principal and leader of your school. If she says that you guys shouldn’t do something, you should listen and obey because she is in charge of you while you are here. Your protection and education at this school is led by her, so when she says don’t do certain things it may be because doing those things can put you or others in danger or doing that thing may cause problems for your education. So in her position of authority, she uses her power for good by making decisions for your benefit.
Jesus uses His authority for good
Jesus uses His authority for good
Jesus uses His authority and power over heaven and earth for our benefit.
Do you know that Jesus has authority over nature?
Once while Jesus and his disciples were traveling on a boat over a lake, they encountered a storm and the disciples became afraid, they woke Jesus and told him, then Jesus said to the storm, “Be quiet and be still!”, and the storm stopped immediately. A lot of us have storms going on in our minds and in our hearts today. I'm here to say that Jesus can also calm the storms in you as well.
Do you know that Jesus has authority over the devil and his demons?
Jesus once went into the wilderness for 40 days and 40 nights and did not eat, and the devil came to tempt him, but Jesus resisted the devil with the Word of God, and told him with authority to leave and the devil left. That same authority has been given to us, accept the Lord Jesus, and receive the power to resist, to resist the devil and his demons..
Do you know that Jesus has authority over diseases?
There was a man and his servant was sick, Jesus was ready to go to the man’s house to heal his servant but the man believed that Jesus is the Son of God and had authority over all things, and said to Jesus “I believe you are God, you don’t need to come to my house; even though my servant is far away you can heal Him from right here”, and that’s what happened! Jesus spoke and the servant was healed. How many of you guys need healing today, listen to the words of God and accept Jesus into your hearts and let Him heal you?
Do you know that Jesus has authority over sin?
Let’s read
1 So He got into a boat, crossed over, and came to His own city.
2 Then behold, they brought to Him a paralytic lying on a bed. When Jesus saw their faith, He said to the paralytic, “Son, be of good cheer; your sins are forgiven you.”
3 And at once some of the scribes said within themselves, “This Man blasphemes!”
4 But Jesus, knowing their thoughts, said, “Why do you think evil in your hearts?
5 For which is easier, to say, ‘Your sins are forgiven you,’ or to say, ‘Arise and walk’?
6 But that you may know that the Son of Man has power on earth to forgive sins”—then He said to the paralytic, “Arise, take up your bed, and go to your house.”
7 And he arose and departed to his house.
8 Now when the multitudes saw it, they marveled and glorified God, who had given such power to men.
I want to highlight 2 things in this passage. #1 Jesus has authority to forgive sins.
Jesus forgives sins
Jesus forgives sins
Here is a man who was paralyzed, that means He couldn’t walk or move. He was not free. Jesus’ first words to him weren’t words to cure him of being paralyzed no, His first words were to forgive His sins.
Sin which means all our wrong doing is the root of all our problems because it is what separated us from God. So sin had to be dealt with first, Healing him and not forgiving his sin first would be similar to us playing our favorite video game for hours straight ,completing it, turning off our game but never once pressing the save button. Jesus has the authority to save us from our sin.
When I was around your age I was paralyzed, not like this man, I was paralyzed mentally by fear. I was graduating and I didn’t know what to do after high school. Some friends were going to college, and others had other plans but I was in limbo, I was paralyzed, and that lasted for three years after graduation.
Until God stepped in and showed me the true problem. I thought the problem was that I couldn’t decide what I wanted to do with my life, no the problem was that I was putting it all on me, There was too much me and not enough God who is truly in control. So when Jesus stepped in, He didn’t show me my future plans, He showed me my faith and it was in myself, I’m not perfect, I will make mistakes so of course only having faith/trusting in myself would lead to fear. He told me to put my faith in Him instead because not only does He know the future and can guide me in my decisions but placing my faith in Him would guarantee my eternal future was secure, I would forever be with Him, I would have a restored relationship with the God of the universe. After that my life was changed, Jesus is my Lord and savior and He’s calling you to accept Him today as-well. Today, I still feel paralyzed sometimes.... but the difference now is that God helps me to overcome it. He reminds me my sins are forgiven, so my future secure with Him, and I receive peace and joy from God the Holy Spirit and that’s how God defeated fear for me. I’m here to tell you God can defeat whatever you are facing, He has all authority, come to Him today and experience victory.
#2 Is that Jesus has authority to help and heal our friends.
Jesus helps our friends
Jesus helps our friends
How many of you here have friends?..... Do you love your friends?
The thing is sometimes our friends are going through difficulties we can't help with; we’d like to, but we can't take away their hurt, we can't take away the pain they feel inside.
That’s why it’s important to know and have a relationship with God, so you can pray for our friends and know who to point them to. Just like the paralyzed man and his friends, they brought Him to Jesus when He couldn’t go himself, for me so many people constantly remind me I am praying for you, they aren’t with me as I face my anxieties and difficulties. But the thing is in those moment’s God is with me, so when they pray to Him for me, they are bringing their paralyzed friend to Jesus to be healed. Jesus has the power and authority to help your friends. This is the great commission,
Pastor Wayne told me, If you heard there was free food at the cafe, would you come to get some? What would you do next? Wouldn’t you run to tell friends about it so they could get some too.
Jesus is calling you into a relationship with Him today, accept God's free gift of kindness and love, come and experience His forgiveness and goodness then you’ll have good news to tell your friends , that Jesus rescued you and He can rescue them too.
Please stand
The gospel is that Jesus died for our sins that He was buried and He rose from the dead victorious over death, satan and sin.
9 that if you confess with your mouth the Lord Jesus and believe in your heart that God has raised Him from the dead, you will be saved.
Come to Christ!
