Pen Jillette: How much do you have to hate someone to not share your faith?
Penn Jillette: If a truck were going to hit you, there comes a point where I would tackle you.
People will not come to Christ unless we speak
He chooses, in his divine sovereignty, to work through us
Fear is the single biggest reason people don’t share their faith. Not just the fear of persecution or ridicule, but the fear of not knowing what to say.
What if...
I say something wrong
what if make Christ look bad
what if I turn them off Jesus forever
How to start?
How to steer? (no conversational whiplash)
How to answer questions?
How to explain the Gospel?
Read the passage
As We go through this, write the verses we talk about down.
There Must Be Something to be Saved From
There Must Be Something to be Saved From
We Are All Sinners
To properly share the gospel, we must help people realize they have a need to be saved.
Living Waters does this well using the old testament law, specifically the 10 commandments.
23 for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God,
There is a Punishment for Sinners
We must recognize we all sin.
To share the Gospel effectively we must not shy away from the truth that the person we are talking to is a sinner.
Talk about when I had Jared role play sharing the gospel
Since we all sin, the thing we are saved from is God’s judgement. Eternal death.
Romans 6:23 (ESV)
23 For the wages of sin is death
If you sin, you die.
It is our nature to sin, and since it is our nature, it is easy.
13 “Enter by the narrow gate. For the gate is wide and the way is easy that leads to destruction, and those who enter by it are many. 14 For the gate is narrow and the way is hard that leads to life, and those who find it are few.
Because it is easy, many people will choose sin over Jesus.
The result of following that path is destruction.
Believe in the Lord Jesus Christ
Believe in the Lord Jesus Christ
Paul’s answer is to believe in the Lord Jesus Christ
Paul didn’t simple tell him to believe and move on. Paul also “Spoke the word of the lord to him”
Paul taught him what it means to be saved. What it means to believe.
We’ll talk more on this later, but it is important to note, that evangelism is not about sharing the gospel and moving on.
What Are We to Believe?
What Are We to Believe?
Jesus Made a Way
Jesus Made a Way
We are to believe that even though we are sinners, Jesus made a way of escape.
We must believe that even though we are doomed to death, Jesus gave us the gift of eternal life.
23 For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.
Through Jesus, we can be saved.
It all focus’ on Jesus’ death on the cross
We must believe that Jesus died for us and that his death gave us forgiveness.
We also must believe that He rose again and His resurrection is the promise of our future resurrection.
God’s is Love
God’s is Love
Why would God do this? He loves us.
It brings Him glory to manifest His love.
As a general rule, humans love heroic sacrifices. From movies, to monuments, we celebrate those who gave their life for others.
What greater sacrifice than God’s love for us freeing us from the bondage of sin.
And we know that His love for us in unconditional because He loved us before we loved him.
8 but God shows his love for us in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us.
God’s love for us, did not start when we believed.
God’s love for us was eternal. From before we turned to him.
God does not change, so His love had to be eternal.
Confession and Belief
Confession and Belief
We are to confess that Jesus is our Lord.
While confession and repentance are different, they are intrinsically connected.
9 because, if you confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved.
37 Now when they heard this they were cut to the heart, and said to Peter and the rest of the apostles, “Brothers, what shall we do?” 38 And Peter said to them, “Repent and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins, and you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.
While Confession is subjecting yourself to the rule of Christ repentance is begging for mercy from the one you’ve wronged.
Man is born with his back toward God. When he truly repents, he turns right around and faces God. Repentance is a change of mind…. Repentance is the tear in the eye of faith.
Dwight L. Moody
Confession and repentance go hand in hand.
If we are to repent, and ask for forgiveness, we are admitting Christ’s rule over us.
Repentance and confession are not a requirement of salvation, but the first works of faith in a new believer. It is the first thing our newfound faith leads us to do.
One cannot both be saved and not confess Jesus as Lord. Repenting and confessing Jesus is the natural outflow of faith.
Repentance will not make you see Christ, but to see Christ will give you repentance.
All Of Grace, Page 72
Charles Spurgeon
9 because, if you confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved.
It is not that confession is a work that brings salvation, but that salvation is an act of God that brings confession.
Confession:
Describes an outward expression of inward trust. Paul does not regard believing in the heart and confessing with the mouth as separate activities, but as parts of a singular expression of faith in Jesus’ lordship.

13 For “everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved.”
When we repent, we cry out to Jesus for salvation. We recognize his Lordship over us and cry out for saving.
What is Salvation
What is Salvation
Salvation sum’s this all in, in that, while we are worthy of our spot in hell, God’s judgement is replaced with His mercy and grace.
1 There is therefore now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus.
And the best part about this is that there is nothing that can take that from us.
38 For I am sure that neither death nor life, nor angels nor rulers, nor things present nor things to come, nor powers, 39 nor height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord.
