Introduction:
Follow God’s Call by William J. McRae
“When Adoniram (A -Don -I-Ram) Judson graduated from college and seminary he received a call from a fashionable church in Boston to become its assistant pastor. Everyone congratulated him. His mother and sister rejoiced that he could live at home with them and do his life work, but Judson shook his head. “My work is not here,” he said. “God is calling me beyond the seas. To stay here, even to serve God in His ministry, I feel would be only partial obedience, and I could not be happy in that.” Although it cost him a great struggle he left mother and sister to follow the heavenly call.
Judson’s churches in Burma have had fifty thousand converts, and the influence of his consecrated life is felt around the world.”
Just like Mr. Judson, we too have a choice to listen and obey to what the Lord asks of us. After tonight’s message, my hope and prayer is that the Lord God will convict you to not only listen to Him, but obey what He has called you to do.
Ezekiel 2–3:11 NLT
“Stand up, son of man,” said the voice. “I want to speak with you.” The Spirit came into me as he spoke, and he set me on my feet. I listened carefully to his words. “Son of man,” he said, “I am sending you to the nation of Israel, a rebellious nation that has rebelled against me. They and their ancestors have been rebelling against me to this very day. They are a stubborn and hard-hearted people. But I am sending you to say to them, ‘This is what the Sovereign Lord says!’ And whether they listen or refuse to listen—for remember, they are rebels—at least they will know they have had a prophet among them. “Son of man, do not fear them or their words. Don’t be afraid even though their threats surround you like nettles and briers and stinging scorpions. Do not be dismayed by their dark scowls, even though they are rebels. You must give them my messages whether they listen or not. But they won’t listen, for they are completely rebellious! Son of man, listen to what I say to you. Do not join them in their rebellion. Open your mouth, and eat what I give you.” Then I looked and saw a hand reaching out to me. It held a scroll, which he unrolled. And I saw that both sides were covered with funeral songs, words of sorrow, and pronouncements of doom. The voice said to me, “Son of man, eat what I am giving you—eat this scroll! Then go and give its message to the people of Israel.” So I opened my mouth, and he fed me the scroll. “Fill your stomach with this,” he said. And when I ate it, it tasted as sweet as honey in my mouth. Then he said, “Son of man, go to the people of Israel and give them my messages. I am not sending you to a foreign people whose language you cannot understand. No, I am not sending you to people with strange and difficult speech. If I did, they would listen! But the people of Israel won’t listen to you any more than they listen to me! For the whole lot of them are hard-hearted and stubborn. But look, I have made you as obstinate and hard-hearted as they are. I have made your forehead as hard as the hardest rock! So don’t be afraid of them or fear their angry looks, even though they are rebels.” Then he added, “Son of man, let all my words sink deep into your own heart first. Listen to them carefully for yourself. Then go to your people in exile and say to them, ‘This is what the Sovereign Lord says!’ Do this whether they listen to you or not.”
(Prayer)
When God Speaks, We Are To Listen:
Ezekiel 2:2 NLT
The Spirit came into me as he spoke, and he set me on my feet. I listened carefully to his words.
Carefully - “with intent and obedience.”
(Example - When mom and dad tell you to do your chores.)
How Do I Hear The Voice of God? - Know His Word
Luke 11:28 NLT
Jesus replied, “But even more blessed are all who hear the word of God and put it into practice.”
Colossians 3:16 NLT
Let the message about Christ, in all its richness, fill your lives. Teach and counsel each other with all the wisdom he gives. Sing psalms and hymns and spiritual songs to God with thankful hearts.
When God Gives You A Command, You Obey:
Ezekiel 2:3 NLT
“Son of man,” he said, “I am sending you to the nation of Israel, a rebellious nation that has rebelled against me. They and their ancestors have been rebelling against me to this very day.
Ezekiel 2:4 NLT
They are a stubborn and hard-hearted people. But I am sending you to say to them, ‘This is what the Sovereign Lord says!’
Ezekiel 2:7 NLT
You must give them my messages whether they listen or not. But they won’t listen, for they are completely rebellious!
Ezekiel 2:8–3:3 NLT
1.) Be Faithful To Where God Has Called You - (Your school, sports team, workplace, families, etc.)
2.) Be Faithful To The Scriptures - You can’t pick and choose what scriptures you want to preach.
(Personal Example: Not preaching a complete text)
Fear God, Not Man:
Ezekiel 2:6 NLT
“Son of man, do not fear them or their words. Don’t be afraid even though their threats surround you like nettles and briers and stinging scorpions. Do not be dismayed by their dark scowls, even though they are rebels.
The Lord didn’t send Ezekiel to place where everyone would accept the words of the Lord. Why should we expect anything different?
Matthew 10:28 NLT
“Don’t be afraid of those who want to kill your body; they cannot touch your soul. Fear only God, who can destroy both soul and body in hell.
In an age of wanting to be approved, you must decide whether or not your approval comes from the Lord or of this world?
Matthew 6:24 NLT
“No one can serve two masters. For you will hate one and love the other; you will be devoted to one and despise the other. You cannot serve God and be enslaved to money.
Conclusion: It’s Time To GO!
Matthew 28:18–20 NLT
Jesus came and told his disciples, “I have been given all authority in heaven and on earth. Therefore, go and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit. Teach these new disciples to obey all the commands I have given you. And be sure of this: I am with you always, even to the end of the age.”
There are people within your sphere who are hurting and broken physically, emotionally, and spiritually. There are people within your sphere who feel unloved and unwanted. There are people in your sphere who live life with no hope for a brighter future. Church, it’ time to GO! It’s time to Go and tell people they are loved. It’s time to go and tell people that their sins and the sins of this world are trying to kill and destroy them. It’s time to go and tell people that there is an answer to the curse of sin and that is through the life, death, and resurrection of Jesus Christ! It’s time to go and be empowered by the same Spirit who raised Christ from the dead and share the blessed of hope in Jesus Christ! It’s time for the church to listen to the voice of God and go do what He calls us to do!
The only question that remains is will you listen and will you go?
