Disciples of Jesus are Willing to Seek First God’s Kingdom based on Matthew 6:24-35

I. What do you worry about?

II. Worrying is a constant temptation.

III. Devotion to Jesus and Matthew 6:33 “But seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things will be added to you.”

IV. God’s kingdom is not a place.

V. Relationships can get in the way of our devotion to God and Matthew 4:25 “And great crowds followed him from Galilee and the Decapolis, and from Jerusalem and Judea, and from beyond the Jordan.”

VI. Devotion to Jesus is more important than devotion to any other person.

VII. There is a part of us that does not want to be completely devoted to Jesus and Matthew 10:37 “Whoever loves father or mother more than me is not worthy of me, and whoever loves son or daughter more than me is not worthy of me.”

VIII. Seeking first the kingdom of God could cost us possessions and Matthew 16:26 “For what will it profit a man if he gains the whole world and forfeits his soul? Or what shall a man give in return for his soul?”

IX. Sadly, sometimes we are more devoted to our family and friends and buying more stuff than we are devoted to Jesus and Matthew 20:28 “The Son of Man came not to be served but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many.”

X. Jesus and Matthew 6:31-33 “Therefore do not be anxious, saying, ‘What shall we eat?’ or ‘What shall we drink?’ or ‘What shall we wear?’ For the Gentiles seek after all these things, and your heavenly Father knows that you need them all. But seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things will be added to you.”

XI. Conclusion. The Holy Spirit of God helps us to be passionate disciples of Jesus, so that we are not anxious or worried about our family and friends or having enough food and drink and clothes. Passionate disciples of Jesus seek first God’s kingdom and righteousness, and all the rest of our needs are taken care of by our gracious and merciful God. Amen.
