Colossians 1:9-11 “9 And so, from the day we heard, we have not ceased to pray for you, asking that you may be filled with the knowledge of his will in all spiritual wisdom and understanding, 10 so as to walk in a manner worthy of the Lord, fully pleasing to him: bearing fruit in every good work and increasing in the knowledge of God; 11 being strengthened with all power, according to his glorious might, for all endurance and patience with joy;”
“Knowing the Will of God”
This was written by Paul about AD 63 when he was imprisoned in Rome for 2 years, waiting to be tried by Caesar.
colossians 1:9 “9 And so, from the day we heard, we have not ceased to pray for you, asking that you may be filled with the knowledge of his will in all spiritual wisdom and understanding,”

I. Knowing God’s will means to be filled with how God wants us to live.

colossians 1:9-11 “9 And so, from the day we heard, we have not ceased to pray for you, asking that you may be filled with the knowledge of his will in all spiritual wisdom and understanding, 10 so as to walk in a manner worthy of the Lord, fully pleasing to him: bearing fruit in every good work and increasing in the knowledge of God; 11 being strengthened with all power, according to his glorious might, for all endurance and patience with joy;

A. The knowledge of how God wants us to live requires spiritual wisdom.

Col. 2:23 “23 These have indeed an appearance of wisdom in promoting self-made religion and asceticism and severity to the body, but they are of no value in stopping the indulgence of the flesh.”
Proverbs 9:10 “10 The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom, and the knowledge of the Holy One is insight.”
Spiritual wisdom requires learning about God and how He wants us to live

B. The knowledge of how God wants us to live requires spiritual understanding.

“Wisdom” refers to knowing how God’s Word commands us to live.
“Understanding” refers to insight, perception, or the ability to discern between things.
Understanding enables us to put the pieces of wisdom together in specific situations.
2 Timothy 2:7 “7 Think over what I say, for the Lord will give you understanding in everything.”
Spiritual understanding is the ability that God gives to be able to bring together the principles of His Word.
Prov. 7:23 “23 till an arrow pierces its liver; as a bird rushes into a snare; he does not know that it will cost him his life.”

II.Knowing God’s will leads to a walk that is worthy of the Lord.

Col. 1:13-14 “13 He has delivered us from the domain of darkness and transferred us to the kingdom of his beloved Son, 14 in whom we have redemption, the forgiveness of sins.”

A. We please the Lord when we bear fruit in every good work.

Colossians 1:10 “10 so as to walk in a manner worthy of the Lord, fully pleasing to him: bearing fruit in every good work and increasing in the knowledge of God;”
John 15:5 “5 I am the vine; you are the branches. Whoever abides in me and I in him, he it is that bears much fruit, for apart from me you can do nothing.”
Good works are the outworking of the life of Christ flowing through us as we rely on Him.

B. We please the Lord when we increase in the knowledge of God.

colossians 1:10 “10 so as to walk in a manner worthy of the Lord, fully pleasing to him: bearing fruit in every good work and increasing in the knowledge of God;”
John 14:21 “21 Whoever has my commandments and keeps them, he it is who loves me. And he who loves me will be loved by my Father, and I will love him and manifest myself to him.
The more we seek the Lord, the closer He is to us, the more we’ll know His will, the more we’ll know the right thing to do according to that will.

C. We please the Lord when we are strengthened with His power to be steadfast and patient.

colossians 1:11 “11 being strengthened with all power, according to his glorious might, for all endurance and patience with joy;”
colossians 1:11 “11 being strengthened with all power, according to his glorious might, for all endurance and patience with joy;”
We please the Lord when we bear fruit, when we grow to know God better, and when we experience His power so that we are steadfast and patient in our trials.
