Is “Putting Out the Fleece” Biblical?

Judges 6:36-40              December 10, 2003

Gideon put out the fleece because he needed courage, not because he needed to know what the Lord wanted of him (6:14-18).

Some Christians today “put out the fleece” either because they don’t know what God wants them to do or because they really don’t want to do what God wants them to do – what they already know.

It is not a way to know what God wants. It is of your own imagination on your own terms. You are putting God on your terms – testing him.

Should we test God?

We wrongly try to test God.

God’s purpose is to test us.

Testing that doesn’t involve God directly.

We rightfully test ourselves.

We may rightfully test God.

We may rightfully test others.
