Abram’s Call

Abram the descendant of Shem

his family is complicated

he is called to go to a land of promise from the place where most people are gathered

through him all the earth will be blessed- the reconciliation will come through his lineage

he enters the land that the Canaanites are still inhabiting

he builds an alter to the God who has blessed him

Journey to Egypt

a famine causes them to leave the promised land in search of food

Abram comes up with a plan to secure food and wealth for them in a time when both of those are scarce

were God not on his side he would have lost his wife to the Pharoah

he basically sells his wife claiming her to be his sister and then gets her back because God still plans to use Sarai

from the get go here we are not meant to see Abram as a perfect man

Application

God calls Abram and gives him a promise

as we will see going forward, Abram will often try to do things his own way out of his own fears and doubts

there is not much different about man from the beginning to now

one rule and Abram will try hard not to follow several times

if we would just not doubt God who gives us his word, we would find ourselves in so much less trouble
