The Law Came So that We Might Know Sin and Our Need of A Savior

Why did God give the Old Covenant - the Law - GOD WANTED PEOPLE TO UNDERSTAND THAT THEY WERE SINFUL AND NEEDED A SAVIOR

Romans 3.20 “because by the works of the Law NO FLESH WILL BE JUSTIFIED IN HIS SIGHT, for through the Law comes the knowledge of sin.”

Romans 5.20 “Now the Law came in so that the transgression would increase, but where sin increased, grace abounded all the more,”

Romans 4.15 “for the Law brings about wrath, but where there is no law, there also is no trespass.”

So can we say that if God had not given the Law we would be okay with Him? - NO, GOD HAS BUILT THE LAW INTO US THROUGH OUR CONSCIENCE

Romans 2.14 “For when Gentiles who do not have the Law naturally do the things of the Law, these, not having the Law, are a law to themselves,”

Because of this it is clear that we are all under the LAW, ITS in subjection under the Law - doomed to death under the Law

Romans 7.1 “Or do you not know, brothers—for I am speaking to those who know the law—that the law is master over a person as long as he lives?”

Romans 3.19 “Now we know that whatever the Law says, it speaks to those who are in the Law, so that every mouth may be shut and all the world may become accountable to God;”

Romans 2.12 “For all who have sinned without the Law will also perish without the Law, and all who have sinned under the Law will be judged by the Law.”

Set free from the Law by being united with Christ

Romans 7.4 “So, my brothers, you also were made to die to the Law through the body of Christ, so that you might be joined to another, to Him who was raised from the dead, in order that we might bear fruit for God.”

Romans 8.2 “For the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus has set you free from the law of sin and of death.”

How are people united with Christ - THROUGH FAITH!

Romans 3.31 “Do we then abolish the Law through faith? May it never be! On the contrary, we establish the Law.”

Romans 4.3 “For what does the Scripture say? “ABRAHAM BELIEVED GOD, AND IT WAS COUNTED TO HIM AS RIGHTEOUSNESS.””

What is faith? Believing God

Hebrews 11.1-2 “Now faith is the assurance of things hoped for, the conviction of things not seen. For by it the men of old gained approval.”

Simply believing that God meant what He said. If that is true we will believe His Word which commands us to keep the Law

How did this faith originate - BY GOD’S GRACE ALONE

Ephesians 2.8-10 “For by grace you have been saved through faith, and this not of yourselves, it is the gift of God; not of works, so that no one may boast. For we are His workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand so that we would walk in them.”

Do we have to keep the Law then? YES!

01. Do we have to worship God alone?

02. Do we have to keep from worshipping idols?

03. Do we have to keep from blaspheming?

04. Do we have to keep the Sabbath?

05. Do we have to honor our parents?

06. Do we have to refrain from murder (anger)?

07. Do we have to refrain from adultery (lust)?

08. Do we have to refrain from stealing?

09. Do we have to refrain from lying?

10. Do we have to refrain from coveting?

Does keeping the Law perfectly without failing at all save us? NO, THAT IS IMPOSSIBLE! Only faith in Jesus Christ’s perfection under the Law, death to atone for sin, burial in fulfillment of prophecy and resurrection by the Power of the Father saves.

Acts 4.12 ““And there is salvation in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven that has been given among men by which we must be saved.””

Romans 10.9-10 “that if you confess with your mouth Jesus as Lord, and believe in your heart that God raised Him from the dead, you will be saved; for with the heart a person believes, leading to righteousness, and with the mouth he confesses, leading to salvation.”

Romans 6.1-2 “What shall we say then? Are we to continue in sin so that grace may increase? May it never be! How shall we who died to sin still live in it?”

Romans 8:31–39 | 31 What then shall we say to these things? If God is for us, who is against us? 32 He who indeed did not spare His own Son, but delivered Him over for us all, how will He not also with Him graciously give us all things? 33 Who will bring a charge against God’s elect? God is the one who justifies; 34 who is the one who condemns? Christ Jesus is He who died, yes, rather who was raised, who is at the right hand of God, who also intercedes for us. 35 Who will separate us from the love of Christ? Will affliction, or turmoil, or persecution, or famine, or nakedness, or peril, or sword? 36 Just as it is written, “FOR YOUR SAKE WE ARE BEING PUT TO DEATH ALL DAY LONG; WE WERE COUNTED AS SHEEP FOR the SLAUGHTER.” 37 But in all these things we overwhelmingly conquer through Him who loved us. 38 For I am convinced that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor rulers, nor things present, nor things to come, nor powers, 39 nor height, nor depth, nor any other created thing, will be able to separate us from the love of God, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.
